AIBU to think public racist / anti immigrant / anti trans posts can justify dismissal?

Read a couple of accounts this week of racist, public supporters of the far-right being sacked for spouting race / immigrant / trans hate on their personal social media accounts.

One was a doctors receptionist.
The other a school learning support assistant.

Both roles where they are likely to work with people in the groups they're publicly trashing online. One was recorded at a far-right rally, speaking about the amount of immigrants she was forced to support in her line of work.

What is your opinion on this?

YABU - People should be able to express their opinion without fear of losing their job. Freedom of speech.

YANBU - Anyone with any kind of public facing role/a role where their employer is likely disapprove of this should not publicly post this way and needs to understand that being sacked is their own fault.

The GP receptionist had some vile stuff on her very open FB page, I have no 9dea if it’s this she was sacked for or something else. However she works in a role where she will come into contact with asylum seekers and if her attitude is as foul at work (even subconsciously) then she cannot be trusted to do that job effectively.

@Slightyamusedandsilly If you didn't want to include discussion about 'anti trans' in this thread, why did you put it in the thread title??

Slightyamusedandsilly · 30/07/2026 19:32

Agree. I once had a post from a private account reported to my employer (think I know who) about me whingeing about us not getting a snow day when all the other businesses in the area did.

Mea culpa. Should NOT have posted it. Totally my error. However, my supposed friend at work was an arse also. Although I was the main culprit, obviously.

Were you particularly rude? Can’t imagine how that would be a disciplinary offence? Unless you threatened to bomb the CEO’s house or something!

What did the TA actually say?

It was a speech, can't remember all of it, just the bit about her school gradually filling up with brown and immigrant kids when it was once all British and how it wasn't right. TBH as I was watching it I couldn't believe she was daft enough to stand up and say it. She must have known she'd be in huge trouble for it.

Ok. So I'm gender critical, openly so. In the course of my work I help people including those who identify as trans.

Because it's my job I use their preferred pronouns, even those of 4 year olds, which I openly state (not at work) is ridiculous and probably an issue with the parent not the child.

If I attend a 'let women speak' rally and talk about my opinions should I be sacked?

Some people seem to think so - clearly my hateful opinions mean that I could not possibly do my job.

I disagree.

No no no, op thinks violent threats to gender critical people is something different and not for discussion here…

I think it’s been done to death on here, TBH, but start another thread to focus on that if you wish to discuss it in greater detail. See? The joys of free speech.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 30/07/2026 19:34

Did Aberdeen uni not initially try and deflect by saying Herbert s posts were nothing to do with his job?

@ALovelyPinkUnicorn just start a new thread. Simples.

So are you going to answer the question or not? Or is it that you don’t want to out yourself as a hypocrite?

There have been cases where people have gone ferreting about to “identify” people’s anonymous social media in order to doxx them. Should they be sacked if it’s discovered by underhand tactics? It’s an interesting question.

New thread. Discuss it there.

Actually, it falls under the scope of what you are arguing about. Either aggressive, violent threats of abuse are sackable offenses or not, surely it shouldn’t matter who they are against.

Freedom of speech isn’t freedom from consequences

Well, not sure that’s consistent with the existing body of ECHR jurisprudence. The only reason the freedom needs to be protected is because of the consequences of free speech. Are you usually hard of thinking?

muggart · 30/07/2026 19:31

Slightyamusedandsilly · 30/07/2026 19:25

Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion. 100%.

But the point is a different one. If you hold an opinion that makes it hard for you to do your job (right-wing LSA who is hostile to immigrants, supporting immigrant children), your opinion is disqualifying you for the job.

I'm not suggesting she should be arrested or cancelled or face violence. But she can't do the job. Because she's made her point very clear that she hates one of the groups she's supposed to support.

The other choice she could have made was to hold this opinion privately. But by giving a speech in public which was recorded and published, she's outed herself.

That’s a logical fallacy. They might be perfectly good at their job. If they are bad at their job, then they would be fired for being bad at their job.

There’s no need to fire them for something else on the assumption that it may or may not indirectly have an impact on their job.

Do you think anyone in this photo should have been sacked?
https://news.sky.com/story/scottish-politicians-and-jk-rowling-voice-anger-over-decapitate-terfs-sign-at-pro-trans-rally-in-glasgow-12793544

If you sack someone for being racist but don’t sack someone for being ableist is that a discriminatory process?

Organisations have to tread carefully so avoid excusing some behaviour and penalising others when objectively there is no material difference in the potential for offence to their user group.

So, just to clarify - hatred against certain groups is ok, or not?

This, so @Slightyamusedandsilly drawing attention to the posts of those who call for the killing of gender critical is something different?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2026 19:27

Can’t really comment on that specific case as I don’t know exactly what was said. So my points are general mostly. Do you have a link?

TRA Heather Herbert for example, said he hoped Ann Widdecombe died screaming in handcuffs when he found out she had died. Should he be sacked from his job at Aberdeen University?

This shouldn’t even need to be a question.

He should have been sacked and arrested immediately.

It’s one thing to secretly have an opinion, but to openly type it out and share it on your social media is another level and these people should absolutely suffer the consequences of it.

Unfortunately, many people will imply that they were hacked.

Apart from MN, I have no social media but my work place has a very strict policy on it.
Before we’re even offered the job, our social media history is throughly checked and as part of our contract if we write any extreme or prejudice views then we can be sacked.
I assumed most places would be similar.

I do not have any sympathy for anyone who actively chooses to make their opinion public to the world.

They make a conscious decision to post and so therefore they should suffer the consequences.

I would not want my DC attending a university where members of staff find amusement and joy in a woman being beaten to death.

Gosh so many inflammatory topics lumped in together.

Anti immigration is not necessarily racist.

Anti trans is critical thinking common sense as opposed to woke nonsense.

people are entitled to their opinions some opinions make sense, some are delusional and some are somewhere in the middle.

The fact that Lucy Connolly had to serve a full year for her tweet which she then deleted is actual insanity. They were totally trying to make an example of her

Yep. Especially when actual rapists have been released after serving far less than that because of over crowding in prisons.

Any violent threats should be sackable imo.
