Aibu to have reported the dustbin lorry to the council?

Bit of back story us and our next door neighbours quietly dislike each other. Nobody has really said anything but I know we both annoy each other from what is said about the street. They moan about us, things we do etc.

Recently they have been playing loud music in the garden at the weekends in a passive aggressive way. This started when they complained about our chickens being noisy ( we have rehomed the chickens because of this but thats another story) the reason I'm saying all of this is because in general I am just in a bad mood about our neighbours and don't know if this has tainted my reaction.

So next door neighbour is a bin man, he wasn't at work.
Bin lorry come and parks up across my drive . Workmen get out and go in neighbours house/garden for 40 minutes having a drink and break. All this time I was unable to get off or access my drive. There was a bin lorry parked unattended across it.

So husband rings to complain to the council. They were confused as on their tracker the lorry was supposedly elsewhere. They also agreed 40minutes was excessive but said they must have been emptying bins? No they were having a cuppa at my neighbours! Council are going to investigate, I suspect they were taking unauthorised breaks and turning the tracker off.. maybe.

Anyway the reason this has also annoyed me so much is our neighbours have lived hear 30+ years and act like they own the street. Complain about anything we do (leaves from our trees fall in their garden for example.) They are 60+ and set in their ways and we are a young family. Tbh I just dont think they like us, we normally don't rise to it and smile and wave etc. But this time I had had enough and complained.

Aibu? And have we just started ww3?

YABU
You didn’t need to get access to your drive at that time. And if you did it would be easy to just ask them to move.
The heat has been sweltering, emptying bins is a hard, heavy job. The operatives need a break As long as they finish their round, does it really matter when and where they take their break?
You dislike your neighbours and are simply making trouble and a drama just to be spiteful.

But that’s your experience, not hers,

That's lots of women's experience with angry men. Who would shout misogynistic abuse at a woman driver if she so much as impeded them for a few seconds in their angry speeding.

NewHere83 · 01/08/2026 08:59

Surprised how many people think you're BU!

Someone parked their vehicle across your driveway. You rang the owner of said vehicle about it.

If you had a relationship with anyone involved. Eg were friendly with the neighbours you might have handled it differently. But you don't, so you handled it transactionally. Perfectly reasonable.

zen1 · 01/08/2026 08:57

YANBU. 40 mins is excessive. They clearly made a choice to block you in rather than park outside the house of the person they were actually visiting - it wasn’t a case of them not having anywhere else to park. Would have pissed me off too.

Ilovecrispytofu · 01/08/2026 08:56

You are definitely not being unreasonable OP. It is bloody rude to block someone’s driveway and extremely stupid if you work for the council. You did the right thing.

blythet · 01/08/2026 08:40

Interested how you play music passive aggressively?
Not really what you’d expect from 60+ year olds but if they’re still in to raving then good on them!

So all music is ‘raving’ is it?! What a ridiculous thing to say

emmadoher · 01/08/2026 08:42

Winewolfhywls · 01/08/2026 08:36

So you ask them to move nicely?

Right and all neighbours are reasonable are they?! As I stated above, if I knocked on my volatile neighbours’ door I’d very likely be assaulted! Some people are aggressive (yes, even at 60+) and mentally unstable. Why should anyone be put at risk because some selfish gits parked across their drive? The entitlement!

ZanyMaker · 01/08/2026 08:36

From @Bumpyroads
But really i reported it because it was blocking my drive. I was wanting to see if people would still report even if they didn't have the bad relationship with the neighbour or if it had tainted my view.

In which case you probably should have just posted an AIBU about reporting bin men for parking in front of my drive for 40mins. Then you could have got peoples opinion on what you really wanted to know - without bringing your neighbours in to it.

emmadoher · 01/08/2026 08:35

There is NO excuse for blocking someone’s drive! None. The mental gymnastics being done on this thread in order to have a bite at OP, is almost funny! A bin wagon was blocking OP’s driveway for FORTY MINUTES! Come on now……

The fact that she didn’t need to leave is totally irrelevant because she absolutely could have needed to! They didn’t know whether she did or didn’t, they just parked there regardless!
If my drive was blocked for 40 mins when I need to leave for the school run I’d be screwed as many people would and we don’t all have the guts to go knocking on the door to request they move. If it were my volatile neighbour then I’d likely be assaulted if I knocked on their door and I actually live in a nice area!

The example of people parking by school is a little different though as that's a daily occurrence. Sounds like this is just a one off and hasn't happened before.

This. These responses are crazy!

Her neighbors are already old, entitled, poorly behaved fuckwits, so I doubt that they can do much worse.

60s isn't really old.

There is no evidence that they are entitled or fuckwits aside from the evidence that they complained about chickens. Our neighbours had chickens, luckily we lived in a semi rural area with long gardens. They still smelled and made a lot of noise.

A parent blocks a drive for 5 mins when going to pick up a child...
"Block them in"
"Complain to the council"

Bin lorry parks there for 40 minutes...
"You are evil"

This. These responses are crazy!

vickylou78 · 01/08/2026 08:29

Ps. I used to have chickens and they were really noisy!!

vickylou78 · 01/08/2026 08:29

Surely you just knock on the door and ask them to move the truck? Absolutely unnecessary to call the office unless they refuse to move. I can see why they maybe don't like you!

Winewolfhywls · 01/08/2026 08:28

Bumpyroads · 30/07/2026 15:29

Council said that the lorry was supposedly to be at a school at that time. We have pictures and also it arriving and leaving on our ring door bell.
Only reason I mentioned ages as I dont understand why they dislike us so much and can only think of the difference in lifestyle and that we have found children. Sorry if you found it irrelevant.

Hmmm from your posts I can see why they don't like you much tbh!

Loud chickens?
Reporting their friends to get sacked?

parkintrouble · 01/08/2026 08:17

Bumpyroads · 01/08/2026 07:54

Yeah I wasn't sure about this if thats the case then fine. I wasn't reporting them for having a break just where they parked. It was the person on the phone that was confused as they weren't supposed to be in our area. The whole break this was kind of secondary.

Im surprised they can park up and leave the lorry for a break though. I've seen them having breaks outside our local fish and chip shop but they are obviously with the vehicle.

Again im not a bin man so wouldn't know, I just know you cant park infont of someone's drive.

I'd be very surprised if they are allowed to deviate from their round at all without good (operational) reasons

My knowledge comes from the insurance claims side of things and bin lorries quite often end up involved in car insurance claims etc.

SevenYellowHammers · 01/08/2026 08:12

Maybe they get longer breaks in the heatwave - or maybe they should have if they don’t? It is fair enough to ask them not to block your drive for a prolonged period but mean spirited to report them.

I am very confused, is the refuse collector the “over 60” neighbour who doesn’t like you or the neighbour who complained about your chickens or the one who play rock music to annoy you?

Aslana · 01/08/2026 08:09

Suggest retract your complaint to Council say you misunderstood, apologize to neighbours say you panicked or something. Make a point of chatting to the binmen when they next come, likewise apologize. It wasn't OK for them to leave their lorry parked over your drive but it is a tough job at any time so try to understand they might want a break. If you didn't ask them to move before making complaint that is mean so try to repair that damage. Or expect retaliation and further bad feeling.

Pinkchickenwine · 01/08/2026 08:04

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 01/08/2026 07:49

If they are acting like their age makes them entitled fuckwits, then I guess they are old. If they are using their older age to expect everyone to kowtow to their "rules", they are old, entitled fuckwits. Working has nothing to do with it. Their behavior does.

But OP says that they annoy the neighbours as well in the OP

Bit of back story us and our next door neighbours quietly dislike each other. Nobody has really said anything but I know we both annoy each other from what is said about the street. They moan about us, things we do etc.

So, is OPs age relevant, or the fact she’s got young children etc, if she’s an annoying fuckwit as well, the anything is relevant?

Honestly, two sets of neighbours that don’t get on, each annoying each other and playing who can be most annoying top trumps!

I wonder what the neighbours next move will be 🤔.

JudyTeeny · 01/08/2026 08:03

I understand why you were mad that the lorry was parked across your drive. We used to have this when our neighbour's carers came and they always parked across our drive. We had a good relationship with our neighbour though and if we needed to get in or out we knocked and told the carers to move their car.
I also get your problem neighbours situation because we once lived in a house where the ndn had lived there since year dot and thought he was king of the road. A couple of times his visitors blocked us in and we had to ask them to move their car. Ndn was quite embarrassed to be the one causing inconvenience so if I were you, if it happens again I'd go round and ask them to move. If they refused, then you'd be in the right to report them.

Bumpyroads · 01/08/2026 08:02

Pinkchickenwine · 01/08/2026 07:40

But forgot the relevant part of they’d done it before? Really? Or added for effect and reason for reporting?

Do you also recognise the classic AIBU trait of an OP

OP - AIBU
Response - YABU
OP - No I’m not, because of XYZ and it’s happened before (drip feed!).

Why ask OP? If you don’t want opposing views.

Actually I do want the opposing views and am just continuing the discussion and answering questions.
Obviously noone likes being told they are wrong but I can now see both sides which before I couldn't. So for me this thread has been helpful.
And in future I will probably think more carefully before I act, I was at my wits end with their shit, and took it out on the wrong people. I would now say yes our neighbour disagreements did affect my decision making. However what the bin men did was wrong and they would have known that so knew the risk they were taking so we are not totally wrong for reporting.

OP posts:
MyDeftDuck · 01/08/2026 07:58

If you genuinely needed to move your car your first action should really have been to go round, knock on the door and ask the driver of the lorry to allow you to get off your drive. If said driver refused and the vehicle remained across your driveway thus blocking you in when you needed to go out then that would justify a complaint to the council.
Having an adult conversation achieves far more than looking for niggling issues to use as ammunition.
Our neighbours no longer speak to us, no idea why 🤷‍♀️, they regularly have visitors who partly block our access, this is family and tradesmen alike but if we need to move our car we knock on their door, smile and ask politely for the offending vehicle to be moved a few feet. No one has ever refused.

I think my point is they have been petty about countless things with us and I finally broke and was petty back.

Bit cutting of nose to spite face though. Wonder if you be back on here in a fortnight moaning bins not emptied or rubbish" accidentally" spilled on your drive etc
