Aibu to have reported the dustbin lorry to the council?

Bit of back story us and our next door neighbours quietly dislike each other. Nobody has really said anything but I know we both annoy each other from what is said about the street. They moan about us, things we do etc.

Recently they have been playing loud music in the garden at the weekends in a passive aggressive way. This started when they complained about our chickens being noisy ( we have rehomed the chickens because of this but thats another story) the reason I'm saying all of this is because in general I am just in a bad mood about our neighbours and don't know if this has tainted my reaction.

So next door neighbour is a bin man, he wasn't at work.
Bin lorry come and parks up across my drive . Workmen get out and go in neighbours house/garden for 40 minutes having a drink and break. All this time I was unable to get off or access my drive. There was a bin lorry parked unattended across it.

So husband rings to complain to the council. They were confused as on their tracker the lorry was supposedly elsewhere. They also agreed 40minutes was excessive but said they must have been emptying bins? No they were having a cuppa at my neighbours! Council are going to investigate, I suspect they were taking unauthorised breaks and turning the tracker off.. maybe.

Anyway the reason this has also annoyed me so much is our neighbours have lived hear 30+ years and act like they own the street. Complain about anything we do (leaves from our trees fall in their garden for example.) They are 60+ and set in their ways and we are a young family. Tbh I just dont think they like us, we normally don't rise to it and smile and wave etc. But this time I had had enough and complained.

Aibu? And have we just started ww3?

Again, so easily avoided if they had just parked properly no? And if they did do it as a favour to their pal to piss the OP off for badness then double hell mend them.

Are you OPs husband? ☎️

They were caught in the crossfire of a neighbour with a grudge looking to cause trouble. Blocking a drive for a short time when the intention wasn’t malicious and act was a minor inconvenience/annoyance at best is very different to actively taking photos, curtain twitching, going Hitchcock rear window and ringing to get them in trouble just to get back at said neighbour. Sure OP even said she didn’t feel proud before digging heels in. Punishment didn’t fit the crime.

Maybe their manager will advise them to go back in time and not block someone's drive at the (likely) behest of their arsehole mate?

It's mystifying to me why anyone would think these bin men are in any way victims here.

I think my point is they have been petty about countless things with us and I finally broke and was petty back.

You weren't petty with your neighbour though. You were petty with someone who had nothing to do with your relationship with the neighbour. I think I might be able to work out why your neighbours don't like you.
Do you feel better now that you got some innocent bin men in to trouble?

Or just tell to stop pissing off people by blocking access for long periods when they arent with thd vehicle. Then this wouldnt happen again ans everyone is happy.

Why should I have to go to theirs and knock when they could have just parked elsewhere?
They couldn't be bothered to walk a few meters from a more sensible parking spot but its fine for me the walk round theirs and ask?

I have a hidden disability they may or may not know about. But obviously I shouldn't mention this as dont want to discriminate as I did with age.

So you are sorry at all. You need a hobby, stop focusing on your neighbour and use this experience to give your head a good wobble.

I can understand you don’t like them, BUT all you’ve achieved is getting his colleagues into trouble and possibly sacked.

Your actions have upped the anti, so now your neighbours will be even worse.

Bravo (not).

What did you think you would achieve? Or do you lack critical thinking?

RedRock41 · 01/08/2026 14:11

OP some of your responses are confusing. On the one hand early on you say you do feel a bit bad, that you’re not proud of it, then your responses argue, very strongly the complete opposite. Even have hidden disability now pulled out of the hat 🎩 🪄.

Imho that was a spiteful thing to do, the intention was malicious and I for one do not buy the but what if there was a sudden emergency straw clutching and I needed out of my drive.

It’s clear if it had been a neighbour you got on with your household would not have turned into supergrass HQ.

I feel sorry for the workies. It’s a rubbish job (no pun intended) and a quick cuppa is not worth them getting into trouble for. They were caught in the crossfire and it’s them not even your neighbours who will be in trouble.

You don’t know what any of them are going through already.

Pinkchickenwine · 01/08/2026 14:07

Bumpyroads · 01/08/2026 07:26

No but I guess his colleagues would be pissed off. But really i reported it because it was blocking my drive. I was wanting to see if people would still report even if they didn't have the bad relationship with the neighbour or if it had tainted my view. It wasn't solely to piss the neighbour off.

Other side next door neighbours dad was working on that bin lorry. Bad coincidence or whatever. They obviously sort of saw it as a 2 in 1, empty daughters bin, then go and see mate the other side.

I know they dont pay as we have recently got a new recycling scheme. Everyone who pays for their garden waste used to have a green bin this was swapped for brown under the thew scheme if you have subscribed. Theirs is still green.

You didn’t call because it was blocking your drive, you did it to get at your neighbour,

You said previously

I think my point is they have been petty about countless things with us and I finally broke and was petty back.

Clearly done the wrong thing

And yet…

To everyone that thinks its ok can you now go and park infront of your neighbours drive?
Or even better next time you're visiting a friend park infront of their neighbours drive.

According to mumsnet It's fine they know where you are and they can just come and ask you to move when they want to leave their own house.
Bet you wouldn't do it, I know i wouldn't.

Quite obviously, most people are saying it didn't matter in this instance, so you didn't need to tell tales on them. Not that it's good to park across driveways at every opportunity, I'm not sure why you think that's what people are saying.

If they'd blocked you in, you needed to get out and they wouldn't move the truck - you'd have got completely different responses.

To be fair you are noticing what everyone else in your street is doing.

We’d be forgiven for thinking you could.

They should not be parked there and it's not on you to track them down and ask them to move it.

@ EmeraldShamrock000

Nope sorry, the dustbin men made the decision that lead to this ending the way it did, when they chose not to park in front of one of the two houses they were visiting but to block a third parties drive instead which was wholly unreasonable.

Why should the OP just need to pop round to avoid issues, why didn't they park where they were going or at least not blocking a drive, there is no excuse for that. They got what they reserved and you reap what you sow.

Edited

Why didn’t she use her words and ask them to move. She took the time to make a call, take photographs but couldn’t simply ask, instead she caused a lot of trouble for these men, causing upset in the neighbourhood, most people have had an unauthorised tea break.
She is an entitled spiteful person.

There is NO excuse for blocking someone’s drive!

I live in a narrow street where there is only room for cars to park on one side. Parking spaces are hard to come by, even though most houses have a drive, because so many people now have more than one vehicle.

Consequently, delivery vans etc have to choose between blocking the entire road or blocking a drive, and do you know what? No-one really gives much of a toss! More often than not, people know where the driver is delivering to or working, and if they don't, it rarely takes more than a couple of minutes to find out.

When the people across the road were having their loft conversion done, my NDN and I were perfectly happy for their tradesmen to block our drives rather than block the whole sodding street and inconvenience everyone when they had to drop off materials and heavy equipment. And the bin men have to block the entire street when they come and empty our bins, too. There's no way they'd ever find a space big enough to park a dustcart here.

Yes but there is a large stretch of straight road with no houses the other side of the street, i have parked there when we've had visitors and our visitors park there. So its not like they had no other option.

Oh for gods sake get over it I've explained why I said there age. End of. Im not ageist/sexist/racist etc etc.
I described them in a way that I saw fit to explain we have different lifestyles or live differently. Honestly its not that deep.

It’s ageist, full stop.
