I’ve read all those authors. I didn’t read them in translation though; I read them in the original French when I was a teenager.

I also have a 1st class honours degree in English Literature.

It's hardly snobbish to say that the books Asda stocks will be the lowest common demoninator, not surprisingly, because it's a supermarket, not a bookshop, and no one goes there to buy books -- disposable thrillers and romance, romantasy, cookery books, minor celebrity autobiography, the dopier end of self-help etc. The only non-shit title I saw last time I looked at books in an Asda was Patrick Radden Keefe's London Falling.

Beginning your sentence with ‘It’s hardly snobbish to say…’ doesn’t, I’m afraid, make it less snobbish.

An entirely unrelated observation: I’ve never met a snob who was actually very bright. Especially the ones who try to dress up their snobbery behind a facade of attempted humour. Embarrassing behaviour.

My library does reservations/deliveries which can be made via app (books come from 4 or 5 counties!) but thankfully it doesn’t charge for this. The length of time it takes for books to arrive is very variable but I tend to have a few reserved or being transported so I get a good flow.

Someone else mentioned that reserving books online means you can’t have a good browse which is true. However I use the Goodreads to track and rate my books and not only is it really easy to search for books/authors it also makes recommendations of books it thinks I may like. I can read the blurb online and then go onto my library app to reserve/get delivered to the library.

I like to check in on my favourite authors and as soon as a new book is announced put a request (80p) at my lovely library.
The best feeling in the whole world when you might just be at the top of the wait list, then that feeling of an unsullied hardback cracking open!
Preferably in a coffee shop!

@SingForYourDinner I felt like my eyes needed bleaching after reading a snippet of 50 Shades that included anal fisting and the Bible in the same sentence... over a friend's shoulder... in a place of holy pilgrimage, complete with nuns 😲Needless to say, I never did get around to reading anything else from that series! (To be fair, I was a naive teenager, and anal fisting had never crossed sullied my mind before that!)

This is true. There’s always something good, ev3n something tiny, in a dreadful book. (I’m carefully not asking what you learned from 50 Shades, which makes The Da Vinci Code look like Proust.

personally i switched to kindle for books, as then its more titles and yes i miss using books but overall its better

Sainsbury's book shelf is usually trash, but there is occasionally one for the upper-middle-brow.

I enjoy occasional trash, but I do wish supermarkets sold grown-up books

Books are educational (even if you learn things that you'd rather not know from 50 Shades of Grey or something) and a large collection also doubles as effective insulation. Admittedly, my TBR pile might topple over and suffocate me in the night, but I'm OK with that. I mean, there are worse ways to go!

I am the kind of person who goes online to look for 2-3 specific books, and ends up ordering 14! I do read them, though... eventually, because I buy other books in between reading the ones that I already have. The library here isn't up to much, and the nearest town doesn't even have a bookshop anymore.

I read a lot too, but use the library and buy second hand to help offset the cost. Husband reads similar books and we pass the round family and friends too & Im getting freebies from them too.

I don’t know about Asda, but Morrisons and Sainsbury’s definitely sold the latest Slow Horses novel. As well as whatever the latest 50 Shades is. They obviously sell what people want to buy. Some well written books. Others I look down my nose at. All sold at that trendy independent bookshop in a nice village or any Waterstones.

Like the OP. I read for pleasure. I don’t want to, or need to, justify my choice of books. It’s enough that they give me pleasure.
