Moody part-time DP and his right to his “chilled days”

Klokhet · 29/07/2026 19:38

Just had a really shite argument and I wanna know if I’m in the wrong 😭

My DP (well I’ll hold the “d” for now) is a part time supply teacher, as in he picks up shifts when he wants to. I’d say he does on average 3 days a week. Obviously doesn’t work the half terms, Christmas, Easter or summer holidays.

I work full time. I have 27(ish) days annual leave. Obviously it’s not DPs fault I don’t have a lot of holidays but there we are.

He’s been off for last week and obviously this week. He did spend one day “tidying the house” (read, putting a wash on, and doing the dishes), but the rest he’s done what he wanted.

Work is a stressful environment at the minute, and I’ve told him so many times I want to leave, that I’m burnout, that I’m struggling. This morning I woke up 10 minutes before I had to leave the house. Work is non stop from the moment I get there.

I’ve just booked us a holiday for next week and I’m really looking forward to it, needed the rest. Booked it this morning on the way into work.

I get home tonight and the house is a tip - PlayStation on in the lounge, dishes everywhere, laundry bin overflowing… and a DP curled in bed fast asleep.

I admittedly was a bit off with him and asked why he hadn’t done anything around the house. He said “it’s my holidays” and “I needed to rest”. I told him I needed more support as I was running on absolute empty.

Then DP jumps up from bed, starts ranting and raving saying it’s holiday, he cleaned last week blah blah blah… and when I said there’s no need to shout, he said “I do what the fuck I want”. Followed by “I’m just evil aren’t I, I’m the bad guy”.

He did some performative cleaning, slamming things down. Told me to go and put the clothes he’d just folded up away and then went back to bed.

I’m sitting in the lounge and he’s continued to come in and out (slamming the door behind him) to get about 3 drinks in an hour 🙄

Aibu to expect a tidy house and maybe even, shock horror, a meal prepared whilst I’ve been out at work for 10 hours, and he’s just been chilling? Or is it his time to relax?

Sounds like my ex husband, gaslighting and abusive when he was asked to do anything that contributed to keeping the house clean/tidy. I was expected to run myself into the ground doing everything and he was entitled to take his holiday without a care in the world. Disgusting behaviour and disrespectful. If you don’t have kids with this person, please leave, this won’t work long term.

Please, if you wouldn’t mind, tell us a bit more about the background of your relationship?
How long have you been together, doesn’t sound like they’re are children involved.
Has it always been this way, regarding work? I.e. you being full time, him being part time?
How does the split of bills work?
How do you feel about that split? What are you gaining being with him, over being single?
Sorry for all the questions - just trying to understand the dynamics.
Him jumping out of bed and being defensive doesn’t sound like a nice place to be.

utahsainthood · 30/07/2026 23:45

LTB he is useless and selfish

likeafishneedsabike · 30/07/2026 22:30

What a lazy, lazy man. With a terrible temper too. He deserves to be dumped.

AndresyFiorella · 30/07/2026 22:27

There's no way he can earn enough to support himself as a part time supply teacher, so I'm assuming you're putting in way more financially than he is? He sounds lazy, rude and entitled and you'd be well rid of him. He can see what it's like to work full time and run a house when he actually has to support himself and not rely on you to bankroll him and be his housekeeper.

Pinkpinkdoor · 30/07/2026 22:21

dont ignore this red flag. I experienced something very similar to this and now I’m going through a really difficult divorce. If it’s like this now it will get much much worse after you’ve had children. He is also incredibly immature and no ability to self reflect. You can’t be in a relationship with someone like this.

unsync · 30/07/2026 20:43

I'd be going on that holiday solo. Fuck that shit.

Nicewoman · 30/07/2026 20:28

All those single women out there must read this chain eating popcorn.

Single: all your money, spend on what you like, you clean and cook perfectly. Got your own friends to socialise with who are loyal to you.

You run your home super efficiently. See your family when you want. Your place looks clean, full of stuff you’ve bought you like.

No having to compromise your life for some lazy ungrateful lump. No partner telling you what to do, or stealing your money or cheating on you. No loading the machine with someone else’s stinking clothes or picking dirty underpants off the floor.

Spend all your time doing exactly as you please, on your terms.

Absolute Bliss!

Why does he work part time? Hmm that’s a good question.
he told me at the beginning of our relationship it’s so he could gain a masters and was studying… this was then replaced by various side hustles that never paid off.

if I mention full time work he tells me to go part time.

On what basis do you live together: is it your place, and he moved in? Expenses: shared equally?

pomers · 30/07/2026 19:53

You are shouldering the whole load. He is not your partner, he’s a total liability. Your life would be easier, more peaceful and tidier without him. Get rid.

fetchacloth · 30/07/2026 19:42

He sounds like a right lazy arse OP, no way would I put up with this whilst working full time. 🙄

taraworld · 30/07/2026 19:41

If you are really fed up with your job get a job as a supply teacher. Seems easy enough with lots of rest days. Also - you can do better than him.

Farmwifefarmlife · 30/07/2026 19:23

I’d be pretty peed off, he can clean / tidy/ meal prep in the morning & chill in the afternoon/ evening with you! If only two of you live in the house one good solid day at the start of the week should keep it pretty clean for the remainder of the week! He’s being lazy !

I work 3 days a week. Am I a cocklodger?

You could be if you are expecting you FT partner to do all the housework.

Well yeah if you do nothing but game and let the laundry basket overflow on your days off..

Redragtoabull · 30/07/2026 19:19

What in the terrible 2's temper tantrum is this shit?
He's a wanker, a total waste of space who is leaving you to do it all. You'll be better off without the dead weight

minipie · 30/07/2026 19:18

UniquePinkSwan · 30/07/2026 19:18

Are you spending the rest of the days gaming on the sofa?

Createausername1970 · 30/07/2026 19:18

Go on holiday on your own.

It's not unreasonable for him to want some days where he does nothing. I like them and I work PT and DH works FT. But the difference is I do the bulk of the housework because I do work PT, so it doesn't impact on DH if I have some lazy days, because I get back on top of a few days later.

He sounds a total waste of space and I would be working out an exit strategy.

minipie · 30/07/2026 19:18

It’s very clear that he wants an undemanding life where he works as little as possible - enough to survive - and does as little as possible by way of household stuff too.

If that’s not your vision of life then suggest you let this one go. I would.

And FGS don’t end up subsidising him financially or having kids with him as you will end up doing everything while he sponges off you.

UniquePinkSwan · 30/07/2026 19:18

Nettie1964 · 30/07/2026 18:45

He works part time 3 days a week!!!! He will never change. Then as soon as you challenge him he does performative cleaning. Kick his lazy arse out. He's a cock lodger. The 1 thing he is bringing to the relationship could be vover by a rabbit.

I work 3 days a week. Am I a cocklodger?

Wishihadanalgorithm · 30/07/2026 19:17

Urgh!

He sounds like a pathetic man-child.

I think you deserve better.

Get rid asap.

UniquePinkSwan · 30/07/2026 19:17

WinterSunglasses · 29/07/2026 20:06

We all want to know what his reason is for only working part-time, OP. If there isn't one, end it now.

You would never say that to a woman. Men can work part time as well

Redragtoabull · 30/07/2026 19:13

He sounds like a fkn child!

Devon1987 · 30/07/2026 18:49

He is loser, will likely always be a loser. Yes he is the bad guy; his partner is struggling and he is doing fuck all to support her. Leave him. Find someone who will actually support you and isn’t a lazy sod. Find someone with a work ethic. You deserve better, don’t waste another day on this pond scum.
