Moody part-time DP and his right to his “chilled days”

Klokhet · 29/07/2026 19:38

Just had a really shite argument and I wanna know if I’m in the wrong 😭

My DP (well I’ll hold the “d” for now) is a part time supply teacher, as in he picks up shifts when he wants to. I’d say he does on average 3 days a week. Obviously doesn’t work the half terms, Christmas, Easter or summer holidays.

I work full time. I have 27(ish) days annual leave. Obviously it’s not DPs fault I don’t have a lot of holidays but there we are.

He’s been off for last week and obviously this week. He did spend one day “tidying the house” (read, putting a wash on, and doing the dishes), but the rest he’s done what he wanted.

Work is a stressful environment at the minute, and I’ve told him so many times I want to leave, that I’m burnout, that I’m struggling. This morning I woke up 10 minutes before I had to leave the house. Work is non stop from the moment I get there.

I’ve just booked us a holiday for next week and I’m really looking forward to it, needed the rest. Booked it this morning on the way into work.

I get home tonight and the house is a tip - PlayStation on in the lounge, dishes everywhere, laundry bin overflowing… and a DP curled in bed fast asleep.

I admittedly was a bit off with him and asked why he hadn’t done anything around the house. He said “it’s my holidays” and “I needed to rest”. I told him I needed more support as I was running on absolute empty.

Then DP jumps up from bed, starts ranting and raving saying it’s holiday, he cleaned last week blah blah blah… and when I said there’s no need to shout, he said “I do what the fuck I want”. Followed by “I’m just evil aren’t I, I’m the bad guy”.

He did some performative cleaning, slamming things down. Told me to go and put the clothes he’d just folded up away and then went back to bed.

I’m sitting in the lounge and he’s continued to come in and out (slamming the door behind him) to get about 3 drinks in an hour 🙄

Aibu to expect a tidy house and maybe even, shock horror, a meal prepared whilst I’ve been out at work for 10 hours, and he’s just been chilling? Or is it his time to relax?

It sounds like he's not mature enough to be in a relationship or to be sharing a house with adults who are not his parents.

@Klokhet i would tell him the LEAST I’d expect is that he tidies up after himself, leaving dishes all over the place is frankly unacceptable at any point. He needs to up his game, and I don’t mean on the PlayStation.

and ok I’m old, but I’d never want to be with anyone who plays computer games, he’s an overgrown teenager and it’s deeply unattractive

Cheeseandolivesplease · Yesterday 12:10

Absolutely nothing wrong with him working pt if it's affordable, but that of course will mean picking up more in terms of housework etc.

Sadly just another typical selfish, narcissistic and probable mysoginistic, thoroughly unpleasant human being who IMO doesn't either respect or even like you...it's both heartbreaking and utterly frustrating that this is a story similarly told and retold so regularly on Mumsnet in one form or another...😥🙄
The answer must always be the same in that this guy will never change, he doesn't want to and doesn't see why he needs to, he will continue to be a complete waste of space and even faced with separation and ultimately divorce will still maintain his ignorance re any problems and cast himself as the victim! 😡

Rubberduck76 · 02/08/2026 21:07

Really sorry OP. He's a nasty piece of work. Yes, he's on holiday but cooking a meal isn't a big deal if he's off with no other responsibilities. You do not mention children or pets. Having the luxury to work a 3 day week aswell. I get that teachers have it tough during term time, but if he's doing supply work, is it really the same? By living together splitting bills, could he afford to be part time if he was single? He sounds like a man child. You are not expecting too much for a meal after a 10 hr day. He sounds pathetic, sorry.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/08/2026 18:13

"I cleaned last week...."

'Yes, but you made a mess THIS week.'

Does he really think houses only need cleaning once a month or something?

bitterbuddhist · 01/08/2026 18:02

OP, this seems to be more a feature than a bug. I'd be looking for a door marked exit, tbh. The last thing you need after your crush of a job is to come home and do another job.

Earlyyearsteacher · 01/08/2026 16:24

I work term time only.
I have days in the holidays where I just kick back and watch TV.
But I will have done all the washing, hung it out folded it and sorted into piles, general housekeeping and will have started dinner by the time my DH gets home.

Sometimes he will get home to a bit of a tip but I will have been baking/ decorating/ gardening that kind of thing.

I do a good clean once a week, so just a quick flick round needed to keep on top of things.

Zero excuse to expect someone to come home and pick up the slack.

I'm just traveling back from our main summer holiday and I still have a full month of holiday ... It's only fair I share the load.

Tell him he is being unfair.

NewDogOwner · 31/07/2026 23:49

He seems like a bit of a lazy dick who isn't very nice to you. He isn't working to make your life better. I would if my partner asked. I have much better holidays than my DH and I have lots of lazy time but I check if he needs coffee and make him dinner lots and do a little more to make his life easier, cause that's what you do when you care about someone.

You deserve a better man.

I'm struggling to see where the partnership aspect comes in.

Agree, what does this Prince bring to this relationship?? Sorry, May have missed replies, but who owns the house? Who pays the bills?
There are actually good guys out there, he just isn't one of them, soz xx Kick out & move on xx

NewDogOwner · 31/07/2026 23:45

Why is he part time? There is usually plenty of work available? If he only works 3 days a week, does he take care of all household stuff and shopping and cooking in the other days? You said ' “tidying the house” (read, putting a wash on, and doing the dishes),' that is not it. If not, he doesn't desperately need a holiday with lots of down time and leaving everything to you.
However, teaching is brutal and teachers / and everyone, if it's possible, need a few days here and there where they are 'off most duties'

ImGoneUnderground · 31/07/2026 23:38

NaiceCupOTea · 29/07/2026 19:45

It's the school hols so it's his 'holiday'- but its a 'holiday from work'. It's not a holiday from life, house work, washing, cooking, life admin, responsibilities. Those things don't stop just cause you are 'on holiday' from work.

Great answer, totally agree x

cantthinkofagoodusername2026 · 31/07/2026 21:59

As others have said, a holiday from work is not a holiday from life. There is still general life admin to be done.
I’d love to know why he thinks he’s so special that he deserves a woman to run around after him. What a brass neck this guy has.

Silverbirchleaf · 31/07/2026 20:44

UniquePinkSwan · 31/07/2026 13:15

Sometimes, yes. Gaming is my hobby

But do you spend all day gaming at the expense of basic household chores? Shopping? Cooking? Leaving the house in a mess? And expecting your dp to accept this when she is run ragged?

UniquePinkSwan · 31/07/2026 13:15

minipie · 30/07/2026 19:18

Are you spending the rest of the days gaming on the sofa?

Sometimes, yes. Gaming is my hobby

JJMama · 31/07/2026 12:33

pinkandwhiteroses · 29/07/2026 19:43

He sounds like a total waste of space.

This. What’s the point of him?

Get rid. This is no partner.

Tuesdayschild50 · 31/07/2026 10:49

He is a lazy bastard there is no way in hell id be with a man like this..you deserve better.
And slamming doors like a child ffs do you really have to stay with him and calls himself a teacher he sounds like a total prick .
Get rid.

Ladygodalmighty · 31/07/2026 10:48

Klokhet · 29/07/2026 20:26

Why does he work part time? Hmm that’s a good question.
he told me at the beginning of our relationship it’s so he could gain a masters and was studying… this was then replaced by various side hustles that never paid off.

if I mention full time work he tells me to go part time.

How can you possibly respect or even want this SLUB (selfish lazy useless b@stard). I doubt that this man child will change and you deserve so much more. Get your ducks in a row and plan for the future you deserve without this waste of space!

YowieeF · 31/07/2026 09:49

He’s an adult baby, do you need anymore red flags ?

PaterPower · 31/07/2026 08:40

Sounds like a big imbalance between the two
of you. I assume that you wouldn’t have enough household income to cover your bills and mortgage etc if you went PT too OP?

As others have asked, who owns the property? If it’s you, then I’d be inclined to tell him to buck up his ideas or leave. Or just to leave.

muddyford · 31/07/2026 08:31

I'm struggling to see where the partnership aspect comes in.

Pinkpinkdoor · 31/07/2026 08:21

AndresyFiorella · 30/07/2026 22:27

There's no way he can earn enough to support himself as a part time supply teacher, so I'm assuming you're putting in way more financially than he is? He sounds lazy, rude and entitled and you'd be well rid of him. He can see what it's like to work full time and run a house when he actually has to support himself and not rely on you to bankroll him and be his housekeeper.

100% agree with this. He probably wouldn’t have the option to work part time if he didn’t have a partner. Having someone steady who is working full time is enabling him to ‘opt out’ of usual responsibilities. Breaking it off now might be difficult but it’s a case of ‘suffer now or suffer later’

NoisyUmberBalonz · 31/07/2026 07:01

Ferralraccoon · 29/07/2026 19:42

Do you have children together?

Yes, him

Specialneedsnightmare · 31/07/2026 06:55

I can't imagine he brings much to your life op!

My guess is he feels entitled to sex when he wants it.

You deserve much better.

jeaux90 · 31/07/2026 06:34

Why are you with this lazy, entitled, moody CF?
