Is this a ‘Soft life’

Wellthatwasabrupt · 29/07/2026 19:25

And would you want it?

Has Dh, one young Dc and dogs, lives overseas by the beach and countryside, nice house with pool and sea views.
Works 6 hours per week from home. Does all drop offs and pick ups, food shop, dinners, majority to do with Dc and sorting bills. Has a cleaner.
Dh works Mon-Fri -finishes 4.30, no one works weekends.
Days are free based around Dc school drops, coffee with friends, Pilates, yoga, studying or reading if you like, watching Netflix all day if you like, shopping, beach, pool, garden

Would you call this a soft life? Would you like it, be honest?

I would absolutely love it for a couple of months. After that I'd be hankering after the city I love within a short drive from a beach in exactly the same way as I feel after a lovely holiday abroad by the beach & a hotel with a pool. I love sunshine but no matter how much aircon you have you still sweat like an ox on ocassions 😂Ariving home to cooler weather is always wonderful 😂
It does sound lovely OP but a soft life, I'm not so sure 🤔

CinnamonJellyBeans · 30/07/2026 00:54

I'm kind of envious of your lifestyle OP, but filling your day with hobbies is not meaningful. A lot of us have done some/all of those things whilst holding down a proper job. I'd be looking to earn some more money and not being so dependent on my husband.

LivingTheDreamish · 30/07/2026 01:02

Sounds lovely but I might be a bit bored. However I’ve never had the luxury of finding out. If you are content then just enjoy your life!

Filler? Being able to really notice & appreciate it all and to be focused more on Dc, dogs, friends, family, nature…that need: to be filled up with more work? just because? and that is what would mean more on your death bed?

Oh you haven’t fallen into the trap of spouting that nonsense that ‘nobody wishes they worked more on their deathbed’ have you? I assure you many women or men of limited means wish they’d done more with their lives but couldn’t. I’m the first person in my family to finish school - before me, the world of higher education was simply closed to my family, no matter how intelligent. Many of them heartily wished they had different opportunities.

I get a lot of meaning and purpose from my work, so it wouldn’t be ideal for me, and I get a lot of satisfaction from supporting myself and my family. I like looking at what we have and knowing that our work provided it all. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a perfectly happy enjoyable life for someone with different values.

NullaEffugium · 30/07/2026 01:48

Soft if you’re only looking at the cover story.
The reality could be more of a gilded cage.

Pssedoffathis · 29/07/2026 23:55

I do this in other ways. Just not over coffee. I find ‘let’s go for coffee’ is a little bit middle class housewifey. Not saying I don’t drink coffee, I am more of a grab and go coffee drinker. Cocktails might be preferable for this kind of heart to heart.

cocktails would but she has to drive back to school and whilst I'm on the bus, I think the head might pass comment if it's tiddled

PumpkinPieAlibi · 30/07/2026 01:54

It sounds very dependent on a man providing this lifestyle and I just couldn't be okay with that.

I also wouldn't feel right knowing that I did very little all day and my husband was working 5 days a week. Maybe 20 hours of work for us both - that would leave a lot of time for both of us to enjoy life and family and hobbies whilst still being productive and working towards something.

Kokonimater · 30/07/2026 02:04

Why do you ask?

FriendlyMedusa · 30/07/2026 02:05

Not soft enough, for me.

I would feel trapped doing all the domestic labour alone, and be concerned that I don't have anything if DH decides to break up for some reason. I also think the amount of free time this person has might be a little overstated here when you factor in everything that goes into running a household.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/07/2026 00:00

Look, you have a lovely life that suits you, I am genuinely happy for you. But it wouldnt suit me, is that really so hard to understand?!

I'm not suggesting you don't have lovely life or that mines better, I accept mine is the worse of everything - sahp in a low income household with no access to benefits.
I'm simply discussing the notion that work is the only way you can enjoy life and get value from your life.

anyway, it's late and this discussion is pointless so good night

Estuaryblues · 30/07/2026 03:03

I never understand people who say they would be bored not working. Why would you be bored? I have always found there are never enough hours in the day.
I've had phases where I haven't worked and phases where I have, I much prefer not working. Although I have cancer now and believe me, I don't regret the time I got to spend with my children when they were growing up.

FatCatSkinnyRat · 30/07/2026 03:25

So they're a student?

FlyingToniBoxes · 30/07/2026 05:13

Why is this all written in the third person?

Why have you spontaneously decided to post this and defend the way you/ this woman live/ lives if you think it's fine?

Is this your life - if so, why defend it when nobody was attacking it before you laid it out and asked for judgement?

It's psychologically reminiscent of a "guess my age" or "am I pretty/ ugly/ rate my looks" photo thread - why do it?

1985goingbackagain · 30/07/2026 06:01

Please tell us the purpose of this thread OP/who you are in the scenario, instead of just disagreeing with everyone who says they would feel that life lacks purpose!

maxslice · 30/07/2026 06:09

I had thought the OP was describing her mother’s life? Am I mistaken. She seems to
have total contempt for this kind of life. To feel there is no purpose or value in it. I disagree, but I would like to know who exactly she is talking about.

itsgoodtobehome · 29/07/2026 20:02

Yes it's a soft life. It also sounds really dull. Where is the motivation, the ambition, the satisfaction? Sounds great for a holiday, but beyond that I would feel mentally very unsatisfied.

Why do people need to have ambition? Sounds dull to me. I’d rather have a nice life than stress getting to the top

I echo your thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this.

BeFairOliveBear · 29/07/2026 23:31

I think you're confusing productivity with purpose. Purpose can come from work, but it can also come from raising children, caring for others, volunteering, creating, learning etc.
We all have different personalities, energy levels and circumstances. The important thing is finding the level of activity and purpose that works for you, rather than assuming there's one formula for everyone. I don't think it's helpful to suggest that people who don't fit a particular idea of "productivity" will inevitably become depressed, addicted or unfulfilled.
We see high rates of depression, addiction and burnout among people with demanding, high-status careers.

I hear what you're saying but I disagree. I think Purpose is a bit of a modernism and I put it into the navel gazing therapy-culture bucket.

The happiest people I know are productive but not with lofty Purpose.

I have a close relative with a job that's not particularly Meaningful in the lofty sense of the word (he works in ad tech, the world would keep turning without ad tech) but he enjoys solving problems all day and creating fixes. That's Productivity, not Purpose.

Kingdomofsleep · 30/07/2026 06:43

Yes of course over-work and over-productivity is not healthy either, surely that's too obvious to need saying.

mondaytosunday · 30/07/2026 06:52

Sounds great as I have a lot of interests that are fulfilling to me but don’t have a financial reward. I can see how with DH’s early finish having a lovely late afternoon/evening routine (though my DH would love to do the cooking)! But time to spend with their child which so many working parents don’t during the week.

Everything but the dog (don't like a dog smell in the house, despite how loving they can be, sorry doggy)
Would want more than one child

Newbornsquareeyes · 30/07/2026 07:15

Have we established what OP means by a soft life?

HollyhockDays · 30/07/2026 07:24

Why are you asking this? Is this you or someone you know?

EmpressaurusKitty · 30/07/2026 07:53

HollyhockDays · 30/07/2026 07:24

Why are you asking this? Is this you or someone you know?

I’ve asked that too & the OP hasn’t replied yet.

I think this life would be great if there was no DH, no child & I was living from a secure income I’d acquired myself somehow.

OutOfTheOtherSide · 30/07/2026 08:06

I'd love it for about 2 weeks but no more. Being reliant on/sponging off a man is not something I could do. Not making a contribution to society, not using my brain, not tapping into my ambition all of that would kill me. Apart from the sheer boredom, I can't imagine how small life would be without keeping potential for growth and independence open. Definitely not for me.
