Best friend has made an issue about my DH’s joke over dinner

We met friends (another couple) at an Indian restaurant last night. My friend ordered a particularly hot curry which we remarked on. DH made a joke along the lines of ‘that’s the face-sitting off the cards tonight’ to which we both laughed as did my friends husband.

Driving home, I could see she messaged me. I got back to read it and she said she thought DH had set out to humiliate her and she expects an apology.

Is it me or has she gone very OTT here?!

OP posts:

It must be, because you think the friend is OTT to ask for an apology after some twat made a joke about shitting on her boyfriend's face, but you were very quick to complain when I laughed at you comparing curry shit jokes to Renaissance art and misspelling Michelangelo.

I don’t remember complaining. I remember making a like joke in response, which is what the friend could have done.

It would be nice for him to apologise as the friend asked for one and it would do no harm to make her feel better about it and draw a line under it, but OP asked if the friend was being OTT, and I think she was, but again, humour is subjective.

Jokes are funny.

That's just a crude, crass remark and you know it. Your friend didn't like your husband's crudeness.

Keep the vulgarity to yourselves. You know it doesn't play well with others, why subject them to it?

ThatCyanCat · 29/07/2026 21:39

DontSayItsOver · 29/07/2026 21:31

I’m not offended at all, I’m just pointing out the irony in criticising one bad joke but not the other.

I wouldn’t dare to assume InterIgnis’s entire character based off one bad joke, and I think they should afford the same benefit to OP DH.

We’ve all put our foot in our mouth before. It doesn’t make us disgusting, just human.

Course you're not, hm hm. I see we've gone from "literal shit jokes are like fine Italian Renaissance art" to the fragility of the human condition, via a totally random route of state school education and divorce and whatever else you threw in there.

What's the terrible objection to "I'm sorry I upset you, I didn't intend to"?

DontSayItsOver · 29/07/2026 21:31

ThatCyanCat · 29/07/2026 21:23

So you're allowed to be offended by jokes at your expense...

GrannyGoggles · 29/07/2026 21:30

I find it vulgar as does she. You and your husband don’t.
I’m ancient and no longer tolerate things I find offensive, including misogyny, meanness and vulgarity.

You do you, let her do her

ThatCyanCat · 29/07/2026 21:23

DontSayItsOver · 29/07/2026 21:13

Yes calling me a rat for thinking humour is subjective is appropriate, but a joke about poop is a stretch to far.

DH is in the trades so to speak and was brought up on a tough old estate so his language can be more industrial than normal, but I didn’t see how I am responsible for the comment.

Oh come on, he’s talking about a sex act.

Do you care about your friend or not?

ThatCyanCat · 29/07/2026 21:13

DontSayItsOver · 29/07/2026 21:09

I’m sorry for a spelling mistake. I went to a state school after all. That’s probably also why I think a crappy joke isn’t divorce-worthy.

This isn't quite as funny as the first post, but it's a respectable encore. I reckon you could keep going. Come on, I'm enjoying the giggle.

DontSayItsOver · 29/07/2026 21:13

InterIgnis · 29/07/2026 20:41

At least OP’s husband, and men of his ilk, have you admirably running to their defence.

Did someone actually compare making a playground level joke about curry shits and face sitting to Michelangelo's David? While misspelling Michelangelo's name?

Oh God. As the kids say, I am dead. That's the funniest thing I've seen on here all week!

It's not about the language, is it? It's the fact he was desperate to bring someone's vagina into the discussion about food.

As I said, weird for it to be the first thing he wants to turn the discussion to.

nocoolnamesleft · 29/07/2026 20:25

How is it a joke? What makes it funny?

The joke is that they can’t engage in cunnilingus in case she shits herself on account of the spicy curry. I didn’t say it’s funny, I just don’t think it’s a capital offence.

InterIgnis · 29/07/2026 20:41

DontSayItsOver · 29/07/2026 20:22

I was obviously making an exaggeration, I don’t think OP’s DH is on the same level as Michaelangelo, but yet again Mumsnet is taking a bad joke and making it into a breakup level crime and an indictment of both of their characters when all it was was a harmless dirty joke.

I’d laugh again - there’s too much uptightness in this world (or is that just on MN!)

No, I have a sense of humour and another man commenting something like that to me would creep me out. Doesn't mater where your partner was bought up or what job he has, not all women find vulgar sexual jokes at their expense amusing. She's probably also upset her H went along with it and didn't say it was too far at the time.

As for not your comment so nothing to do with you, she probably wants to see you again but not if he behaves like that and she doesn't feel comfortable confronting him herself.

givemesteel · 29/07/2026 20:33

It's really crass. I probably wouldn't have texted you after and publically laughed it off.

But I wouldn't go for dinner with you again. I'm picky about who I have dinner with as its a treat and I don't want to cringe and that would be on the veto list. I've vetoed couples for less.

Ah yes, because OP’s husband is to humor what Michelangelo was to art.

Don’t give Protestants all the credit for recognizing this man for what he is. We wouldn’t appreciate him over in Orthodox-land either (and we too have names for his type). I also doubt the Catholics would particularly appreciate his comedic genius.

BlueHydrangea7 · 29/07/2026 20:12

The comment was a bit gross but I'm surprised (quite often) at the level of offence taken on MN.

Your DH needs to read the room in future and know his audience but I don't think he should be apologising, he certainly didn't set out to humiliate your friend.

NoSausage · 29/07/2026 20:12

Well if you actually think what he said was funny and she didnt then you probably aren't suited to being friends.

RampantIvy · 29/07/2026 20:12

A slightly risqué joke that is so bad it’s worth going NC.

I’m one away from bingo. Just need someone to mention the words working class or Jeremy Kyle.

You lot would’ve called Michaelango’s David a disgusting piece of smut.

Nah it’s definitely just on Mumsnet. They all act so prim and proper like they are all so perfect but you need to remember half of them haven’t been near a man in years.

Thankfully, I have indeed managed to avoid your standard of man, likely due to the fact that’s I’ve never felt compelled to go digging around in the trash for them.

OP - It was a classless comment and not even a funny one.
