Why is it always workers who pay

Agreed. I don’t mind paying more tax if we see real improvements in social care.

But why? The government spends more on the elderly than on children by a wide margin. I understand why it spends on children, they're not capable of paying for themselves. But if you've had your whole life to prepare for your old age, and have failed to do so, why should younger people pay for that?

JustMerelyHere · 29/07/2026 18:28

Tax pensions and people won't save properly and then we'll all end up funding their retirement. We should be encouraging people to save for their future and take responsibility for themselves.

A 10% inheritance tax would be great for my MIL. She went into a care home over 5 years ago with assets of about £450 000. In that time she's also received about £20 000 per year after tax in pensions so another £100 000. So far she's paid out over £340 000 to the care home so frankly paying £55 000 out of the £550 000 when she dies would be great for DH.

I'm not sure a 10% inheritance tax would be enough to cover care for all and I have no confidence that it would be ring fenced anyway.

I think it would be the care part only? The bed and board would be paid by the person needing the care I imagine. You’d have to hope that carehomes wouldn’t just hike their prices up though.

As I recall Teresa May’s death tax required a universal £30k contribution for free adult social care for life. I would absolutely have snapped her hand off for that as should anyone who had any genuine understanding of the cost of social care and how the system works.

Oh my goodness me too! 30 000 barely covers six months in a middle of the road carehome.

magnomam · 29/07/2026 18:04

I did too but I assume they realised it’s nonsense & scuttled off

Ted27 · 29/07/2026 18:02

@magnomam

I know, but I like to give people a chance to evidence their claims

Lightuptheroom · 29/07/2026 18:02

Council run care homes used to exist, then the local authorities slowly closed them all and adopted the 'rent a bed' approach instead. I was an administrator for a group of 6 council run care homes, by 2015 they had closed them all

Ted27 · 29/07/2026 17:54

@TheFrendo

Do you have a source for that statistic?
I think you may be out by several hundred thousand

They will be no source because it’s absolutely nonsense

Darker · 29/07/2026 17:55

In my opinion we need to look at the money being made by the private companies running care homes and children’s homes. Take it back into public ownership.

Getting rid of Inheritance tax isn't fair either though. Why should working people pay more tax so that other people get a big unearned windfall? The deceased doesn't lose out, because they're dead. The only losers in Inheritance tax are the beneficiaries who did nothing to earn it, so it seems one of the fairer taxes to me.
Agree that private care homes need scrutiny and ideally dispensing with.

But I think the million pound exemption ( when two parents leave a home to children or grandchildren) would be lifted so it’s swings and roundabouts really. You’re better off with ten percent of that than zero. The very rich will always have professional inheritance advice no what you do.

"exceptijg between husband and wife"

Punish people who never found love.

how nice.

at this point I'm going to leave the lot to charity.

ETA - continue to punish... we already are punished IHT wise for not finding someone to marry.

Edited

My reason for excepting between husband and wife (include same sex etc) is because there is a state sanctioned partnership to share assets. So the tax should be applied after both have died.

It is not to punish anyone - just recognising the joint ownership in this instance.

if it is a punishment, it is against those who live together, but have not formed a civil partnership or marriage. However, this is usually a personal choice, as is the decision to leave everything to charity.

IggysPop · 29/07/2026 17:48

Orangemintcream · 29/07/2026 17:21

State pension needs to rise with inflation to protect people from the cost of living rises.

I like the idea of 10% IHT for all aside from - for example - the first 10k - as well as phased tax bands - everyone ought to be paying something.

Then the NHS needs total reform. European style system instead with employer, insurance and individual payments via tax. Fix the waiting lists, allow people to see consultants when they need them and not have to wait a year to get in front of one.

I 100% agree with taxing wealth rather than income with IHT being a case in point. I am sure there are brilliant people working on different models as we speak. But this has been happening for years.

What this really needs is a good communication strategy about the model that is chosen as to why it is the fairest and most equitable. And then hope that people don’t selfishly choose the option that appears to impact them least - or by falling for the latest low cost lies party.

Paganpentacle · 29/07/2026 16:58

So... if you don't have any inheritance to leave you get away with not contributing... again.
The burden always seems to fall on the same shouolders.

Neither the person with assets or the person without contributes. Because they are both dead.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/07/2026 17:47

Tax is absolutely fine when it's then spent on us

I agree, @happyjoe, but all too often the very services and people who need it are the last to actually see any of the money

There's a touching faith that the state, if handed even more money, could solve everything for us, but I'm afraid it's not a faith I share - at least not with the way things are currently set up

Dalesway · 29/07/2026 17:47

CurdinHenry · 29/07/2026 13:30

Why is it always workers who pay

You do realise it's workers who have occupational pensions, usually having contributed heavily during their working lives?

How much do you contribute to your pension currently?

PussyGaylore · 29/07/2026 17:47

Jenkibuble · 29/07/2026 17:21

This needs to be done carefully or it can be clawed back - deprivation of assets !

7 years I believe!

No, there's no time limit on Deprivation of Assets. The 7 years refers to inheritance tax. Local councils will go over everything to see if a person has the means to pay towards their care and can claw money back if there's been an attempt to dispose of assets or cash.

magnomam · 29/07/2026 17:37

450k millionaires left the UK in the last 2 years?!

You need to check your figures! 😆😆

AB wants 10 years. Who will be left to soak by then?

Landlords are selling up due the the new renters rights. Tax them more and they’ll be hardly any left so rents will increase with demand?

Dishwashersforever · 29/07/2026 17:33

Happyjoe · 29/07/2026 16:44

Not to be a total dick but why does someone who inherits have to pay and someone in social housing with no property to leave have little to pay?

There needs to be a fair system.

What I would like is the care homes to be council run, instead of most of them charing so so much money and it just going to huge investment companies overseas. As soon as these investment companies take over things the prices go so high, like at the vets for example.

Edited

Oh I totally agree that carehomes should be government run or at least not for profit. I think inheritance tax would be on everything, not just houses etc, but savings and anything else. You obviously can’t tax people on something they don’t have though …I’d rather leave a house to my kids and pay inheritance tax than not have a house to leave at all.

TheFrendo · 29/07/2026 17:29

Since Labour came to power in 2024, 450,000 millionaires have left the UK. These people were paying a lot of tax, both in absolute terms and proportionately.

With them gone, everybody else will have to pay more tax.

This will only get worse. The national debt is £3T, the interest is ~£150b a year and we are borrowing that too.

Fecked.

Digerydont · 29/07/2026 17:27

Viviennemary · 29/07/2026 17:01

I agree. Everybody needs to contribute according to their means.

To me that includes people who don't work, but could, working. Make people do something in exchange for their benefits, and a lot of resentment towards UC claimants would vanish.
