To ask what year your car is?

Doesn’t sound like that’s what is bothering rhe OP though. They haven’t named environmental impact etc.

2018

Expecting another 5 years or so from it. People have new cars because of the scam that is PCP.

2016 - but low mileage. Only just over 40k.

DH and me have 5 cars between us. I guess that’s fairly unusual but other people have 5 dogs! Our cars are quite different and serve different purposes! Different ages and a mix of sports, cabriolet, 4x4 and an EV. We enjoy driving them. Range from 1991 to 2024.

2026, upgraded to a bigger car by inheritance. I’d rather have kept my loved ones mind you.

And particularly SUVs which take up too much room in car parks and on the roads (and often on pavements too). Some of the cars are monstrous.

Thanks, that is a lot less then the deals I came across. Though not as much choice for petrol cars unfortunately (I have looked into whether I could make electric work, but my mileage is too unpredictable and often to new places so planning for charging would be hard work)

Other peoples choices affect us all

Just focus on your own choices and not on other people and theirs. If they want an SUV, fine. It’s not your problem.

My car is 2025 and beautiful. We all make our own choices within our own circumstances.

Mine and DH’s are both 2019, 50-60k miles on the clock. We bought them outright in 2022 with money we made from selling our old house. We will keep running them until it is no longer feasible then probably go for another 3-5 year old car instead of new.

Because it’s Mumsnet and nobody can prove they’re lying to try and impress people with their wealth.

I pay £330 a month for 15000 a year on an electric SUV. It’s v good value in my opinion. I can’t remember who I did it through this time but I’ve changed all the time. There are comparison sites and if you call they’ll often give a good price

Change every two years 2026

2016 Ford C-Max. It had 2500 miles on it when I got it in early 2019, now nearly 45000. It was ex-Motability.

Bought both on HP when they were 3 years old and still using. As DH is particular about car maintenance, servicing, etc, they’ve not given us any problems so plan to use for as long as needed.

Mine is a 2011 plate but only 60,000 and my partners is 2022 plate. We replaced my partners last year and his previous car was a 2011 plate. His was at 95000 and was starting to need a more repairs and was no longer meeting our needs - we switched from a hatchback with 280L boot space to an estate with 600L. We could have kept it slightly longer but as it was approaching 100,000 we wanted to sell it before that milestone. We know there's not a huge difference between 98,000 and 102,000 we know that psychological and practically (search filters etc) it would be preferable to sell prior to reaching 100,000 miles.

My car is developing it's little quirks and it seems to be a car that is susceptible to car park rashes. I only do 2000-4000 a year in it and it's a luxury rather than a need to have it. I did manage fairly well on trains and buses when it was off the road for 6 weeks recently due to having issues getting hold of spare parts to fix a simple issue that meant the car didn't work at all.

Our plan is to keep it until my needs change and evaluate what we would need out of our second car.

We try to buy cars that are 3-5 years old with low mileage and for cash. Our plan with my partners car is to evaluate our needs and the car as it approaches 10 years old and/or 100,000. This is what we have done with our previous cars. At 10 years they were in good order and we kept them but as already mentioned as my partners car was approaching 100,000 we decided it would be better to replace. Had to been my car that has reached 100,000 we would have kept it.

Do you mind me asking if you have any recommended companies for leasing when you drive a lot?
I looked into it last time I was looking at cars and all the deals were for very low mileage (under 6k or 8k a year) when I tried to get quotes for higher mileage some just refused and some were higher than my mortgage!
I can link into the NHS scheme through work but only for fully electric vehicles, which is annoying as that wouldn't actually be possible in my job.

2025 (75) EV. Leased through a work scheme, very reasonable payment which covers everything. Although, I am tempted to buy a second hand EV outright when I have to give the car back. Not having to worry about fuel has been great, but not having a monthly payment would be nice too.

My car is a 2022 I by a car out right, usually when it's a year old and run for 7 or 8 years. Although there are some absolutely stunning new cars around at the moment. I'm always of the opinion the older and a bit battered car in a car park is always the best ,it's still going strong ( hopefully) after giving its owner years of service.

2004

2015 - it's a lowish mileage Ford Fiesta. I've always bought second hand cars, and put a little money aside every month for my next one. My savings account currently has just under £6,000, so hopefully I can keep the current car up and running for another couple of years!
