DP wants to end relationship over old videos on my phone

July26 · 26/07/2026 21:50

NC’d for understandable reasons.

DP went through my phone last night, and found very old videos I hadn’t deleted of me and my ex. Extremely stupid I know, both to have taken them in the first place (not something I was keen on, and my face isn’t visible), and to have not deleted them. But honestly, I forgot they were on there. I’ve got stuff on my phone going back nearly 10 years, it all carries over when I’ve upgraded my phone and I’ve never looked back at it/got round to deleting things.

He went mental, said we are over and he doesn’t want to listen to my ‘excuses’, he considers it a betrayal and questions whether I’ve still looked at them regularly when alone.

I am distraught, I love him and can’t imagine my life without him in it. We don’t live together but he was staying here this weekend and stormed out last night. He has ignored me today but I don’t seem to be blocked.

Do you think ending the relationship is over the top? Would you give it a day or two before contacting him again?

It’s rubbish that he just ‘stumbled across them’ whilst looking for holiday pics. He was deliberately searching for old pictures/ videos from 10 years ago. His reaction is completely unhinged and he has no right to try and shame you.

Ok, but so what if he was…

The OP has said that they allowed each other to access each others phones, so this isn’t a case of him hacking in or accessing it when she inadvertently hadn’t locked the screen.

Given they had given access to each others phones, he had no reason to suspect there was anything untoward or private on there, and was just browsing old photos… In the circumstances I don’t see why this is even a “crime’, let alone a relationship-ending one…. it’s no different to looking at a photo album really.

But this is MN, and where there’s a bloke there’s smoke… And if there’s smoke, there’s fire… and if there’s fire, it’s LTB…

It’a crazy how a man looking through some photos on his partner’s open phone that she voluntarily made available to him, is somehow an abusive monster for getting upset when he found numerous undeleted clips of homemade porn of her and an ex!

MN truly goes through the looking glass sometimes - it’s double-standards wouldn’t be out of place in Orwell’s 1984!

'I wasn't keen on the act, so I only made six videos of me doing it'

Really? So because you've done something once you have to do it again? I went camping with my ex husband, and I enjoyed it. I don't want to do it now as I'm older. I think there's probably some videos of it on facebook as well. Should my now husband be devastated? That applies even more to sex. You can do things, or not do things amd give or take away permission at any point. Being devastated because your partner once enjoyed sex with someone else is batshit.

We don't know what she only did it once. She may have done it many times and enjoyed it all those times. And that would be absolutely ok. Why are people keen to make out that she was forced or not willing when she hasn't actually said that. She said she was uncomfortable with the filming so she could have also said she was uncomfortable with the act itself, but she didn't. And thst is fine. Why can't that be fine?

To avoid a drip feed; yes they are x rated videos and I know they wouldn’t have been nice for him to have found. We use each others phones on occasion if one of them is out of reach/charging, I am certainly not secretive. He was using it to watch something whilst I was showering and then went on to the camera roll, he says he was looking for a photo from a previous holiday and stumbled across the videos.

"and then went on to the camera roll, he says he was looking for a photo from a previous holiday and stumbled across the videos."
Bullshit, he was snooping unless you told him you were a virgin he knows you had sex before him so thats all on him, if hes reacted like this hes not going to drop it, it will get thrown in your face in every disagreement, dump

So keeping sex videos with an ex on your phone is OK now? Not disrespectful to the current partner at all?

Only if you're a woman. If it was a woman posting that she'd found sex videos of her boyfriend and his ex, she would immediately be told to leave him because he's clearly wanking over her

sheisforrealatiger · 27/07/2026 09:27

Newbutoldfather · 27/07/2026 09:18

Again, what does ‘going through her phone’ mean? Was it without OP’s permission? If so, yes, that is extreme disrespectful and a reason for ending the relationship.

But, maybe they both look at one another’s phones regularly or he asked OP if he could look for a photo which he liked.

And maybe he was digging, but maybe he just searched for a place or a term which brought up what he was looking for and these videos. It is easy to search a photo album these days.

Only OP knows the answers to these and can make a judgement based on what happened.

I often send myself nice pictures my DH has taken of my kids/the kids with me, but even though I have permission, I don’t go scrolling through YEARS worth of pictures until I’m in definitely before-we-we’re-together territory and then flip my lid over what I find there.

And to the people saying you can use the search or categories, what do you think he typed in the search or what category could he have been looking in, knowing that OP’s face wasn’t in the video so he can’t have been looking through a collection of images of her?

Angrybird76 · 27/07/2026 09:26

PoliteRoseViewer · 27/07/2026 09:09

Ignoring all the other noise, just from his point of view if you've been with your partner whose not been interested in an act, you come to terms with that and live with their choice, and then you find evidence that they'd happily do said act with another partner in the past. It would be absolutely devasting

Really? So because you've done something once you have to do it again? I went camping with my ex husband, and I enjoyed it. I don't want to do it now as I'm older. I think there's probably some videos of it on facebook as well. Should my now husband be devastated? That applies even more to sex. Poppingby · 27/07/2026 09:26

He's allowed to end it with you for any reason or none isn't he. I'm sorry you're hurting.

I'm finding the posts from men on here very enlightening as they clearly have no idea that most women - like really MOST - are going to have been coerced into doing something sexually they're not that keen on when young. It is basically painted as expected as you by society. Getting all butt hurt by it (pardon the phrase, no doubt relevant) because your partner when older and more confident in what they don't want won't do it with you is fucking pathetic and just shows men have no interest whatsoever in the experiences of women. Just the ways in which they will excite their stupid knobs. If you look at it that way you are well rid OP.

Screamingabdabz · 27/07/2026 09:26

I would end a relationship over these circumstances too. It’s all too grim. I’m on his side.

YABU op. You should’ve deleted those videos years ago - I’d be mortified they even existed in the first place.

Flowersinthegrass · 27/07/2026 09:25

Sunnibee · 27/07/2026 08:48

No it's not hard to get past. Women don't owe you particular sex acts. Our bodies are not a public service required to distribute it all out fairly and equally . We are people with complex , evolving and situational preferences, desires and feelings about our bodies HTH.

Sure. But in the choices that are made, men (who are also complex and evolving) can infer information. It isn't about being owed something but what it means that it wasn't freely and enthusiastically given. Again, I don't think he has behaved well and I don't think that what I am saying shows a secure mindset, but burying ones head in the sand doesn't make things go away.

Noodge · 27/07/2026 09:25

Assuming he didn't think you were a virgin before you met, he knew about your previous relationship(s). All he's done is decided to watch you within that previous relationship. You've told him you no longer use the videos for anything. He doesn't trust you. I wouldn't want to be with someone who doesn't trust me nor be with someone who chooses to watch something and then flips their lid over it. I am like you, there's all sorts of crap on my 'phone and I couldn't tell you half of it. I just have priorities of what things I organise and old files on my 'phone are not one of those things. Life's busy.

MajorProcrastination · 27/07/2026 09:24

Rewind. Why is he looking through your phone?

GrumpyPanda · 27/07/2026 09:23

Something tells me you haven't RTFT.

VestibuleWeaver · 27/07/2026 09:23

NeverLookInTheMirror · 26/07/2026 22:49

Usual double standards abound I see.

If this was a woman finding pictures of her partner and his ex having a shag that he’d held on to not one person would be saying that she was in the wrong for going through his phone.

In fact whenever a woman finds something on their partner’s phone this is used as instant justification for having gone through it in the first place “you presumably wouldn’t be looking through his phone if you didn’t have suspicions’ is a line which is frequently trotted out on here.

And let’s not pretend that the old “I wasn’t really keen” line isn’t the oldest line in the book.

You did the act, you video’d it, and you held on to it. Everyone would be saying that he likely watches the videos if this was a man, but because the OP is a woman she’s of course an innocent party in all this.

Nobody forgets to get rid of video’s they didn’t actually want to participate in. Don’t take the bloke for a mug.

I would absolutely end it as well on the basis that you think it’s perfectly ok to have sexy video’s of you and an ex on your phone to presumably enjoy.

Agreed. If OP had found such videos on her DP's phone it would have been near 100% LTB.

Angrybird76 · 27/07/2026 09:23

rainbowstardrops · 27/07/2026 09:09

Exactly what I was thinking!

Disagree. In most posts. Even where there have been serious flags that the person was doing something dodgy, the woman gets berated for 'snooping'. In this case, the OP hasnt done anything wrong. He hasnt found 'evidence' that his suspicions were right. What suspicions? So in this scenario he had suspicions that the OP had had sex with her ex and recorded it and he was right? Makes no sense at all.

Sunnibee · 27/07/2026 09:22

Newbutoldfather · 27/07/2026 09:03

@Sunnibee ,

‘No it's not hard to get past. Women don't owe you particular sex acts. Our bodies are not a public service required to distribute it all out fairly and equally . We are people with complex , evolving and situational preferences, desires and feelings about our bodies HTH.’

And men don’t owe ‘you’ a relationship. It’s not an HTH at all.

If your partner/husband refused to go down on you (for example) because he said he hated it, and then you saw a video of him enthusiastically going down on his ex, would you really think ‘oh well, he was young then and his desires have changed’. I seriously doubt it.

I am not saying that it’s not true or unreasonable for the OP to have changed and be more certain of her likes/disliked, but it’s not a black and white thing if OP wants her relationship to continue. Some sympathetic talk is required and maybe some counselling.

and men don't owe you a relationship

certainly not. Where did I suggest that please? My advice to OP is that she has dodged a bullet , this man is controlling, insecure, possessive and doesn't respect her boundaries. No one needs a relationship with a man like that.
And to answer your questions, no I would never go through my partners phone for any reason especially to hunt for old videos. If I found any tbh i wouldn't care less, and I certainly wouldn't use that as an excuse to get angry at them. Why would I? Its none of my business what my partner did with women in the past; don't see men's bodies as my possessions.

gannett · 27/07/2026 09:21

If a woman posted that she'd found old sex videos of her husband and his ex there's zero chance that the overwhelming response wouldn't be "LTB, he's kept them to wank over them".

I'd completely disagree with that though, and OP's partner is being ridiculous. Your partner has had a sexual history before you, everyone needs to get over that fact. Snooping through your partner's phone is a much worse red flag than forgetting about risque media. Sexual jealousy is honestly a major red flag as well. You dodged a bullet OP.

That said keep track of your sex videos and nudes better! I've never, ever forgotten where those are stored, and I'm not exactly an organised person.

JJkate · 27/07/2026 09:19

OP this is not a good man. He has no right to expect you behave in certain ways just because you did it in the past. That's very coercive and troubling. What is also concerning is that he's making out the relationship is over due to something related to past relationships that have nothing to do with him and I assume were between two consenting adults. It's basically jealousy and control and very worrying. I would take this as he's done you a favour and get out now whilst you can. No decent person would behave this way.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 27/07/2026 09:18

AStonedRose · 27/07/2026 08:56

It can't possibly be abusive to leave a relationship. To suggest it could be is some serious DARVO shit

And, as has been done to death here, someone can leave a relationship for any reason they want. Even men.

Did you quote me in error? I haven't said it is abusive and I agree, people can leave a relationship for any reason.

I am a man. If I found videos of my partner in sexual acts that she had a refused to do with me, it would be very hard to avoid thinking that she is less/not attracted to me. I am not saying that is necessarily correct or fair, but it is a credible explanation - you yourself say that you were comfortable then but are not now - that would be very hard to work past.

She said she was then conformable trying them. That's a very, very far cry from saying she was comfortable doing them more than once even then.

hugasaurus · 27/07/2026 09:16

God I’ve been married well over a decade and there’s probably dodgy videos buried somewhere on a device or in my emails from years gone by. I wouldn’t even know how to find them at this point really! I’m sure my husband had the same.

Don’t go looking for stuff you aren’t prepared to find!

There are (or were, as I’ve deleted them now) 6, I did say in my op ‘videos’, and lots of the replies reference there only being one.

How long have you been together?

I would leave DH if he had a gallery of videos having sex with an ex. One can be explained as slipping through the web. I wouldn’t forgive multiple.

Cosyblankets · 27/07/2026 09:12

WelshRabBite · 27/07/2026 09:09

OP, you may not see it yet, but you are better off without this man, so let him go.

You gave him permission to use your phone to watch a film and he waited until you were in the shower and unable to observe him to delve into other things. If he wanted a holiday snap, he could have just asked you for it when you were out of the shower.

He went looking for something and found evidence of you having a sexual relationship with someone who predated him.

  1. He shouldn’t have been searching your phone
  2. He should accept that you had sex before you met him
  3. This is about anal sex I’m going to guess (it’s always about anal 🙄)

It sounds like you had consensual sex with a previous partner and filmed it. You tried something new, you didn’t like it and decided you wouldn’t be doing it in future. This is all normal.

You meet current man, he wants anal/different sex you say no. Hopefully he accepts that and moves on, never asking again (no means no, right?). But it wouldn’t surprise me if this guy asked more than once, or asked Why? And pushed you on the matter.

Very armchair psychologist here, but I do believe that men who have a Madonna/whore complex (I.e. they’re happy to shag around with women, but want their partner to be an actual or near virgin) are just looking for ways to devalue women, and they use slut-shaming as a way.

i would hazard a guess that he thinks you’re worth more than him in some way; maybe you earn more, own a home while he rents, are more educated, outwardly more objectively attractive, something like that. So he went looking for something in your phone that he could use to pull you down a peg or two, so he then has an upper hand in the relationship (as you’d have to beg for forgiveness/him back).

I’m guessing here, and I’m not saying that people tend to be happy if they view their partner having sex with someone else, but he’s essentially slut-shaming you for having sex in a previous relationship, possibly with the hopes of getting you to beg him back and do anal/whatever sexual thing he wants.

I’d own it, you had sex in a previous relationship, big whoop. Step back, don’t beg, don’t even contact him, this is a him problem. He went looking for something to have a go at you about and found something he could use. That’s not a healthy relationship to be in.

It's not about having sex before this partner though it's about keeping the videos
