AIBU for refusing to straighten my kids hair for my brothers wedding?

Next week is my brother's wedding. We are all super excited to welcome my sister-in-law to the family. Obviously this wedding has been planned for months now and up until yesterday I was under the assumption that my kids hairstyle during the wedding didn't really matter.

I have two DC (8 year old daughter, 4 year old son). They are half black, half white. I'm white, as is my extended family. My kids have really curly hair, my daughter has 4A hair and my son has 4B hair.

Yesterday my kids re-tried their outfits for the wedding, just to make sure the outfits still fit. My SIL asked for confirmation, so I sent her a text and I said that the kids outfits still fit. That's when she sent me a text in response asking me if I can straighten my daughters hair for the wedding, and if possible can I straighten my sons hair aswell. Now I've never straightened my kids hair in order to avoid heat damage, they are way too young to understand the damage that straightening their hair can cause. So I told my SIL that I'm not comfortable straightening their hair, but if she has any hairstyles in mind that would work for curly hair, just let me know.

She didn't respond for like 30 minutes. And then when she did respond she said that she thinks it's quite rude for me to try and dictate her wedding. And that she expects their hair to be straight on her wedding day. She said she won't tolerate their hair not being straight for the wedding.

I also got a text from my DM telling me to keep the peace and to just straighten their hair for this one occasion. However, I'm still reusing to straighten their hair, it's really unhealthy for their hair especially when they are too young to understand.

AIBU?

Sorry if I haven't got this right but are they not racist connections to Afro hair being expected to be straightened . Obviously I realise it's a choice nowadays

As an aside I didn't realise there were categories of curl. My son had ringlets so it was interesting to see

CommentHere · 26/07/2026 10:20

A few things:

So if they have straight hair people won't notice the colour of their skin?

If you did straighten 4A and 4B hair with a normal straightener it would look awful, it's not easy to do.

How many guests will be getting GHD curls for the wedding? Will that also not be tolerated?

Tell her you are happy to accessorise DD hair to match the dress but won't be straightening to match her white cousins.

There is no way on earth I would be dictated to by a racist like that.

Actually :

”I consider this request to be flagrantly racist”

should suffice

No one wants to be thought of as a racist, she will surely apologise

Perfect 👍

If this is real it's shocking. Does your brother know he is marrying a racist Bridezilla?
Honestly I think I would refuse to go your future sister in law's behaviour is despicable

Merryoldgoat · 26/07/2026 10:19

Plus what hairstyle can’t she have with Afro hair? Age just doesn’t want it to look ‘black’

Besidemyselfwithworry · 26/07/2026 10:19

SummerSummerSummertime · 26/07/2026 09:36

Are you serious?! WTAF. No WAY would I straighten my kids hair.
How the hell does that impact her wedding in any way? Fucking INSANE and frankly, racist. Jesus.

Edited

I absolutely agree
tell her no and explain the damage and say this is not only racist but dangerous especially for a 4 year old to be near straightening irons!!
talk about bridezilla
I think I’d just say I’m not going!!!!

category12 · 26/07/2026 10:19

What's she actually going to do when she says she won't tolerate it? Throw you and two kids out of the wedding venue?

I'd speak to your brother.

It's racist AF.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 26/07/2026 10:16

The irony of you calling the SIL a bit racist in an ignorant way. Point proven that so many racists are quite dim.

Edited

sorry how am I racist?

Heronwatcher · 26/07/2026 10:19

I wouldn’t be straightening the hair.

I’d hesitate to call racism, so would send the same message to all your family framing it in terms of children’s’ self esteem and confidence rather than anything else. I’d give your brother and sister in law a potential olive branch if possible. But would be making it clear that there will be no straightening. And that if this is a non-negotiable you will regretfully not be able to attend. Downplay it to your kids and book a fun day out instead.

Why oh why do so many people (women) turn into lunatics about weddings? All
this needless tat, aesthetics and theming is such a waste of time and money. Honestly I think society is going backwards at the moment. Plus bet your kids look absolutely gorgeous.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/07/2026 10:18

Just say ok then turn up on the day with the children with their natural hair.
Might ruin the brides day a teeny tiny bit but she won't kick off because she knows how she will look.

If it’s ’just hair’ then why does it matter if it’s curly?

Sereine · 26/07/2026 10:18

SIL's use of "won't tolerate" is interesting. She's basically saying she won't tolerate people with the characteristics of black people, which could hardly be more racist if it tried.

I suppose the most charitable interpretation of her viewpoint is that, in her head, all the attendants will have a similar hairstyle and that won't be possible with very curly hair. However, it doesn't really exonerate her because in deciding on that hairstyle she should have factored in the children actually involved. It's not as if it's that difficult, she could have talked it through with a hairdresser. One of DSis's bridesmaids was black, she simply organised a hairdresser for herself and all the bridesmaids who had experience with working with white and black types of hair and let them sort out the best hairstyle between them. It looked great on the day.

DozyCrow · 26/07/2026 10:17

I'm assuming both your DD and DS hair is a reasonable length if she wants it straightened. She's out of order requesting this, especially as you've tried to compromise and have asked for hairstyle suggestions for their curls. I'm wondering what she means by "won't tolerate". Will the kids get sacked off from their duties if they turn up with curly hair? That would (quite rightly) be embarrassing for her if people ask why the children are dressed as attendants and weren't included in the wedding procession.

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 26/07/2026 10:17

I'd be asking her why their hair needs to be straight and then enjoy whatever bullshit she comes up with to try not to appear racist.
I'd also be speaking firmly with my Mum to ask her why she is supporting racism at the expense of her grandchildren, fuck keeping the peace.

Curly hair is fabulous, end of.

BIWI · 26/07/2026 10:17

@OrianaK it's not 'just hair' though, is it? Do you not understand the implications of this request?

Mamalasira · 26/07/2026 10:17

dramaisalifestyle · 26/07/2026 10:15

I do have hairstyle in mind. The point was that if my SIL had any specific hairstyles for curly hair, she could send me those hairstyles

She's 8. Do her hair how you normally do it, or ask her if she would prefer a certain style. Go with that.

Jk987 · 26/07/2026 10:11

I can hardly believe her ignorance! Can you post a screenshot of her text? Im
shockef she’d ask you to do this!

Why would anyone post a screenshot of a text? Are you a journo needing a photo for your next article?

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 26/07/2026 10:16

Growingaseed · 26/07/2026 10:02

Strange things happen with brides on their weddings when there is so much stress. Perhaps they have quite big, beautiful hair and she wants something a bit less 'wild' for the photos. It is a bit racist but in a slightly ignorant way. Are your nieces curls more 'controlled'/smaller hair overall?

I would have just done it personally to keep the peace. Straightening once isn't going to cause that much damage and that hair will get chopped off before long. However, I totally get why you wouldn't and she is coming across as a dick.

Tbf I asked for my nephew to not have a hair cut for a few weeks before my wedding as his mum always has it cut like a skin head and I don't like the look at all 🙈. I did say if possible though and wouldn't have thrown my toys out the pram...

Are they in the wedding? If your daughter is a bridesmaid and it needs straightening for the hairstyle then I'd understand but why your son too?

I can't imagine it'll look very good straightened, I also can't imagine it'll make them look "whiter".

Where's the bride from? What's her heritage? The only people Ive met who have a problem with natural black hair are black Americans. They all seem to think its messy and relax their kids hair from toddlerhood.

My daughter is a flower girl. And my SIL is born and raised here in England, as is her entire family

Would you be okay if the bride asked them to wear make up too to tone down their skin colour

Mischance · 26/07/2026 10:16

Bloody weddings - they have turned from being a happy celebration to welcome someone new into the family to a performance.

Tell this cow to go forth and multiply ......

You "understand" if the 8 year old daughter "needs" to have her hair straightened if she's a bridesmaid?
Why would you impose these particular beauty standards on a young girl?
Her natural hair is curly. That is how she should wear it.

TheyGrewUp · 26/07/2026 10:15

I'm not certain it's the behaviour of a racist, rather than of a self-centred pig ignorant twerp fixated on her photos and social media rather than on her marriage which is about the joining of two families.

Either way, she's not someone I'd be likely to mix with through choice.

dramaisalifestyle · 26/07/2026 10:15

SnoopyPajamas · 26/07/2026 10:12

OP, I'm fully on board with you not straightening their head. SIL can get to fuck on that one.

But I found it a bit odd you would ask her "if she has any hairstyles in mind that would work with curly hair". As their mum, I would have expected that you would have a list of styles that work on them, and would make those suggestions to her. What do you normally do for "smart" occasions?

I do have hairstyle in mind. The point was that if my SIL had any specific hairstyles for curly hair, she could send me those hairstyles
