Are you a hummer or a whistler? If so, why?? My husband wanders around the house, generally making noise... WHY???

Whistling really puts my teeth on edge.

I’m certain people do it deliberately to dominate their surroundings.

I’m a singer of little snippets of song that are in my mind - I am susceptible to songs in my mind unfortunately!

DH and I are both singers. ALL. THE. TIME.

Whether it's wheels on the bus or some nonsense from the radio we are always singing. We sing as we do things... eg DH will wander in the kitchen singing about getting a biscuit as he gets a biscuit.

I appreciate this is a nightmare. People point it out to me all the time in public (supermarkets, walking, whatever). DH is more self aware in public.

Neither of us can sing particularly well, it's just a bimbling habit. I do think we bring it out in each other more though.

Sorta sorry and also not sorry.

Me too, ive had a boss say she was happy that I was walking on singing that morning. Its not because I sound like Elvis, although...it just meant that the project that was going tit's up was back on track and the meeting i had at the clients office the day before went well. So one burst of All Shook Up saved a 30 minute meeting

I'm a (female) whistler. I don't realise I'm doing it. My Father was the same. DH/DC sometimes have to tell me to shut up as I whistle in inappropriate situations. A work teams meeting was once abandoned because of the background noise. My closest colleague contacted me afterwards to tell me it was my whistle!

My MIL hates silence so hums tunelessly.
If there’s music on and we are e.g cooking, reading or generally pottering she will hum tunelessly over the top of the music and increase the volume of the humming so we can all hear it. It makes me rage. It may be better if she was humming the music we were playing but no it’s completely discordant. Why does she think we want to hear tuneless humming over the music we what to hear? She stays with us for several months at a time as well do this is all day. Faaaaaaaaark!

I can’t bear loud noises, car alarms, smoke alarms, any sudden noise. I’ve asked for ear defenders for my birthday. I might never take them off….

DD finds it horrifying. DS is the same as me so we harmonise 🤣

I feel your pain, OP! DH is a whistler. He's very good at it, strongly in tune and LOUD.

But, oh God - he whistles all the time. I don't think he realises he is doing it. And he will get a song in his head and then whistle the same four bars of it. Over. and. over. again. For hours, if not told to STFU.

He looks hurt and says, 'Am I not allowed to be cheerful?' if you say anything.

I do it subconsciously. I’ve got ADHD and apparently it’s a form of stimming and I’ve also got a song going on in my head constantly but I don’t realise I’m doing it until someone tells me to shut up. I’ve noticed if I’m humming I’m more focused, I think I’m probably worse if I’m trying to concentrate on getting something done.
