To slow cook two ribeye steaks?

I ordered two rump steaks from Sainsbury’s this weekend. My plan was to slow cook them. Nothing fancy, just the cheap £3 steaks. I get four meals out of it, I slow cook it with stock and tomatoes and it’s gorgeous.

For some reason Sainsbury’s have substituted them for two of their premium ribeye steaks. I don’t eat steak in the traditional way - a slab of fried beef doesn’t appeal to me at all, but I love it slow cooked.

AIBU to still fry them up and slow cook them? It feels like a bit of a waste of such a premium cut of meat, but I think it would be more wasteful to not use it!

Why reheat? Can’t you just plan two separate meals and cook them on different nights? With veg prep it’ll probably take 10-15 min all in. If you’re having it in a packed lunch or something then do a noodle salad or a sandwich that can be eaten cold.

Edited

For lunch at work. I do meal prep, I don’t have time to cook each night.

@CatsMagic Why are you buying rump steak to braise anyway? Why not buy braising steak which is obviously meant for slow cooking. It's cheaper, does exactly what it's supposed to do, and is delicious.

Because it’s bloody delicious, 2 steaks from Sainsbury’s will do me four meals, it works out about £2.50 a meal when all the extras are added in

But this particular type of steak really can’t be slow cooker without it being horrible and barely edible. It just doesn’t work. It’ll be like an oily piece of old jerky.

Will that reheat well though? It needs to be able to do four meals for the week minimum

Why do you need to reheat it? Just cut it up and cook it fresh everyday.

I don't understand the issue. It's your meat. It belongs to you. You can do whatever you want with it: cook it, eat it raw, bin it, give it to stray cats - it's yours. As for 'noooooo, it's a steak! Can't be slow cooked' - says who? Course it can. The only thing that matters is that OP likes it that way. Go ahead and slow cook it.

Slow cooking rib eye will have a completely different result to your slow cooked rump, it will result in a greasy rubbery texture , so it wouldn’t have it in your usual dish as it won’t be very nice.

Rib eye needs cooking at a high temperature to get the best from it , I second the fajita/sandwich/taco suggestions , sliced very thinly, dash of salt and pepper and then pan fried high and quick will produce nice tasty meat.

That’s really odd. So you can’t eat it as a slab but can if it’s cut up? Can’t you get someoene to cut it up for you so you can eat it?

It’s to do with the texture. Chewing a big slab of steak makes me physically gag. When it’s slow cooked it falls apart and i find it a lot easier to eat.

Why do people say nonsense like they "can't" eat steak?

You might not want to, but you can eat it! It's delicious!

For a lot of people the chewing and swallowing of fillet type meat is very hard or uncomfortable, try thinking that your experience is not the only one out there and that might help

dontmalbeconme · 25/07/2026 13:16

Cook it however you want to eat it. It's not that deep.

I just can’t eat steak like that. I don’t know why, I’ve tried, but slow cooked is really the only way I can eat it.

Would it reheat well if sliced and fried? My plan was to use it for meal prep for the week for work. Obviously Sainsbury’s scuppered that one!

I'd cook it the way you planned, the fat will combine with the tomatoes to give a beef flavour throughout. I recently did air fried steak.

The problem with a lot of other methods, including frying is drying the meat out by overcooking. Slow cooking removes that problem and captures all the flavour which can be lost with frying

This was going to be my suggestion too.
Stirfry, taco, burrito, fajita, steak and onion baguette

Great minds!

there’s actually a lot you can do with it OP in between eating it as God intended or turning it into a bit of leather.

Summerishere123 · 25/07/2026 12:55

DancingonmyOwn88 · 25/07/2026 12:43

Could you not slice it up very thinly and use it for tacos or fajitas? You can’t braise it or slow cook, it’ll be a sad piece of jerky.

This is kind of how I feel, but I’m not a fan of steak so I think it would go to waste otherwise!

If it cooks really slow , falls apart and tastes delicious why is that a waste ?
I can't eat a big lump of steak either but i can eat luscious slow cooked beef.

Quitelikeit · 25/07/2026 12:52

Maybe try it and update us with pic too

Don't you have any friends or family who like steak? If you offered them the ribeye for £3 I'm sure that they'd bite your hand off.

Quitelikeit · 25/07/2026 12:48

What can’t you eat them cooked?

They can be just as tender as they would be in the slow cooker

you could make ribeye fajitas

vegemitesandwiches · 25/07/2026 12:46

Can't you slice it up, pan-fry it and have it with stir fry or something?

ImogenBrocklehurst · 25/07/2026 12:44

How about this? We have renamed it bathtub steak…
