My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I would just find this funny, not ick. Maybe I would find it irritating over time - I don't know. Part of me finds it sweet that he's tolerant of his over-anxious mum.

DD18 and I share our locations via Life360 - she suggested it because she worries about me! I'm now wondering whether we'll still have it when she's 31 ha ha.

However I would absolutely not let your own phone be tracked! Nip that in the bud right now.

TheSunnySwan · 25/07/2026 14:56

Run don't look back him and and his mum are strange

thatgreenjuniper · 25/07/2026 14:52

In what kind of emergency can trackers be needed really?

Elderly parent with dementia who can go missing is one thing, but normal teenagers and adults?

When would a tracker be of any help?

Thelobsterisinthejar · 25/07/2026 14:51

Run away now

Dobeebeedah · 25/07/2026 14:51

It's the same with all computer facilities, if it's available use it. That's what happens. It's insidious. I would question whether I wanted to meet anyone socially if lots of people, who weren't with us, could see where I am, who with, what I'm doing. This is surveillance and not for any good reason at all. We are meant to be a free nation. Potentially we are being spied on and recorded all the time: 1984 has arrived late.

whippersnapper55 · 25/07/2026 14:49

Bizarre 😳 I have 5 adult sons and it would not occur to me to track their location! Why does she need to know where he is all the time? He's an adult man! The fact that he is quite comfortable with this would worry me to be honest!

AbzMoz · 25/07/2026 14:47

In the words of Iron Maiden…. Run to the hills… run for your liiiiife!
absolutely batshit and so so so much of a red flag he hasn’t switched it off.

scoopsahoooy · 25/07/2026 14:47

This is absolutely batshit - her tracking him at all, her checking in on him so often/showing up, him asking you to share yours as well for her sake. Absolutely fucking not.

Cosyblankets · 25/07/2026 12:14

So you've been with him a year and this is the first time it's happened yet it seems to now be happening a lot?

Hmm yes, this post reads very weirdly. You've noticed 4 or 5 times in the past week when you've been together a year? And the way it's written is very strange and unnatural.

And it makes zero sense why she would want your location.

Did you use AI by any chance?

GordonBuzz · 25/07/2026 14:46

I don’t think it is particularly odd that they have location tracking on but it is very odd that his mum is using it so extensively and making that known. She sounds quite intrusive.

My son has location tracking on with us still (he is 22 and has moved out), although I don’t have notifications on now he is an adult. Probably check it once a week for a specific reason e.g. if I want to pop something round to his house - if during the working week see if he is working from home or office/weekend see if he is around before I even bother texting. Rule #1 is to never comment if you find something unexpected (e.g. 4 hours away in London). He uses it with us in the same way. If I am at work my phone is locked away so he knows he won’t get a response for hours.

Fransgran · 25/07/2026 14:45

A few years ago, I read an autobiography of a singer/presenter I quite liked. When I came to a sentence in which he said he knew what his wife was doing every minute of the day, I went right off him immediately. I don't know if a tracker was involved but I found the statement very jarring and intrusive. I often worry about my adult children but I know that this is my problem and everyone is entitled to an autonomous life.

LocalHobo · 25/07/2026 14:44

It’s pretty normal to share locations within the family. My lot all do.
A bit weird all the messages and the popping in.

My eldest set this up when she was a teen so she could see how far away I was when I was collecting her from various places, and the others DC followed suit.
Although the DC are now in their 20's I have never disabled it but can't remember when I last used it. I've just checked it was still there to respond to this post and DS is on Stornoway (normally London) I wonder what he's up to! (Don't worry I'm not going to text him to find out😜)

Dobeebeedah · 25/07/2026 14:44

It would really freak me out: Some woman, who I hardly know, wants to know the ins and outs of my life via a tracking app! What the hell is the World coming to? This is attempting to use monitoring on an industrial scale. Dump both of them and run. Any further contact is harassment.

Silverbirchleaf · 25/07/2026 14:42

The tracker per se doesn’t bother me.

It’s the constant ringing and interfering on his life, and also the fact that dp always responds to her calls. What would happen if you asked him not to respond to her?

MissMoneyFairy · 25/07/2026 14:42

Do not share your location with him or his mum, turn it off when you are with him, do not give her your phone number. They both sound as bad as each other.

Scout2016 · 25/07/2026 14:40

It doesn't matter how common it is. 99.9% of the population might act like this, it only matters whether you want to or not. Personally I would be firmly in the not category.

Checking where he is a few times a day is more like surveillance than a safety precaution. Now she wants to stalk you too and he thinks that's fine!

Tablesandchairs23 · 25/07/2026 14:38

Dump him he's sad mummies boy

"Do it with" fine
"Do it to" not fine

I think routine tracking with no short term resons fucking odd by itself - feeding people's anxiety.

However it's not hard to see how people will overstep and justify it even when the child/teen/adult starts not to want it - they have been trained to see it as normal menaing coercive and abusive partners in future would find it easier to impose that behavior.

I know how ever that many on here are very wedded to tracking - and indeed there can be very limited situations where it can be useful - but it's one of situation - I do it it's fine - others doing it is creepy and odd and peopel twist themselves into all kinds of loops to try and make that true.

I have AirTags in all our cars, mostly because if someone took one I don’t think the police would do anything about it and I have some half-arsed notion of recovering the car myself. In reality, the someone would probably find and dump the AirTag. The family all know they are there. The kids are on Android and would rightly balk at location sharing.

I work away from home during the week, so if I forget to let him know roughly what time I’ll be home, he occasionally checks on my progress. This is purely about dinner being ready for when I get in 🍽️😋

He did quiz me about being in Oxford once, because he’d forgotten I was going there with work. Most recently he thought I was in hospital because the car park for my accommodation is by a hospital, but it’s clearly marked on the map as a a children’s hospital. Eventually one of the kids called to check up on me. 🤦

The downside is if the kids (21 & 23) are late home he worries about them. He forgets that as a young man if his mum asked him where he was going he just told her “out”.

I think the air tags have their use. Many cars are dumped for 24 or 48h to check if they have trackers, so if you rush to try to locate your car, you might very well have a chance to find it.

Channellingsophistication · 25/07/2026 14:33

I think its weird - he is an adult for gods sake!
Ditch him, otherwise you have a lot of misery ahead! He should not be happy with his mother following him around and tracking his every move

TwoBagsOfCompost · 25/07/2026 14:32

Tracking - OK as it’s useful and practical plus can help in emergencies.

The messaging and constant surveillance and popping round?! Run like the fucking WIND as a PP said. It will only get worse.

Does MIL have other children and is she the same with all of them?

Tracking is awful, I’d never agree to it. DP wants me to put him on find my friends so I can find his phone when he leaves it somewhere 🙄 but I won’t do it because it’s the thin edge of the wedge IME.

godmum56 · 25/07/2026 14:31

AprilMizzel · 25/07/2026 14:26

I think it's really odd - but on previous threads there are many posters who think it's great for teens and many who do it to even to uni students and into 20s - so a large number of young being trained into thinking it is normal.

I think when they meet people not trained to think like that there will start to be increased clashes like this.

I said it's extremely odd and I'd stick to that with him especially the ringing up and asking questions with the implied disapproval - I think there may well be control issues there which could impact your realtionship if it progresses.

"Do it with" fine
"Do it to" not fine
