My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

So… did you chuck him?

Does his mom still change his diapers?

I hope you're not British

This is a perfect example - yes, same as teenagers, also swearing, like teenagers from a wee scheme.

Why do you assume I don’t have children? And what is a “wee scheme”?

You sound likely a ghastly individual.

So you've been with him a year and this is the first time it's happened yet it seems to now be happening a lot?

This is exactly my first thought. I would have thought she would have noticed these signs before now as it seems to have happened a lot in a week.

Friendlygingercat · 29/07/2026 03:34

Unless you are some kind of public figure (eg Prince Harry/Andy Burnham) and the people tracking you are your security detail there is no way I think this is normal for an adult. I would cut my throat with a rusty saw rather than allow another person to stalk me in this way.

charlieandjenna · 28/07/2026 17:48

I’m on the opposite side of this. I am the mum with my 24yr old daughter’s location, and she has mine. To be fair though I’m not checking in on her all the time and definitely not messaging to ask why she’s not where I’d have expected her to be unless it’s something like the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere. I do just like to know she’s got to work safely or home from work or wherever though. It’s just a safety thing for me. Definitely not for constant checking or questioning

My mum has mine too because I solo travel. I’m 30. She does not ring me asking me where I am, that would be really fucking weird. I live alone too, and do a lot alone so it’s to keep me safe but I’m a woman so I get the worry. Your boyfriend’s mum is really weird for this though.

How does someone tracking you keep you safe?

And when other "entities" start asking for it "to keep you safe" everyone is so used to it they won't even question it.

😂😂😂

I'm sure op will be back any time now to update, or at least thank people for the advice

Well my son is 40 and I have his location on Google maps. It's handy if he's coming to see me so I can see what time he is likelh to arrive so I can get the kettle on, when he goes home I can see he has got home
He has mine too which might come in handy if I'm in an accident
But I don't look to see where he is every day. I might if I'm looking up somewhere on Google maps see that he is working in a different town, but I don't do anything about it.
If I was away and he wasn't far away maybe I might say meet you for a meal but that's not happened yet
I go weeks without seeing where he is
Is never dream of commenting that he has gone to x town

Bagsofcharacter · 28/07/2026 10:02

I would agree with that. It gives me enormous pleasure to see they’ve safely arrived home and to share some events but I wouldn’t dream of turning up on them or criticising anything they do. It’s just nice when your retired to see your family enjoying life whilst you are stuck at home.

Indeed.

I wonder if it was meant to be clickbait.

It generated an interesting discussion though.

Brendan1 · 27/07/2026 21:14

It’s not the location sharing that’s the issue but the constant checking/looking, and then the messages about it. My wife and I have this set up, and some friends are on mine and I on theirs, but unless we are actually worried or can’t reach each other we share location on whatsapp or iMessage separate to the find my. The idea being that the find my is more for in case of emergency and it’s important to not abuse it. It’s like being on the same bill, that’s fine, but checking each others call logs? That’s messed up.

Delatron · 27/07/2026 18:35

Yes it worries me that kids are growing up thinking this is normal
and yes parents are perpetuating this with the ‘oh it helps me plan when to put the dinner on’.

We need to stop normalising this. Even I had a few raised eyebrows from DH when I said I didn’t want to be tracked. Because everyone has normalised this shit!!

RampantIvy · 27/07/2026 18:14

It really isn't normal at all. It is weird and creepy.

saraclara · 27/07/2026 17:07

Delatron · 27/07/2026 16:18

Yes. I hate that this is normalised. It actually increases the rates of abusive and coercive control in relationships - you normalise this shit and abusers can track their partners and increase control.

Nobody should be tracking anybody. It’s a complete invasion of privacy. I don’t track my partner or my teens.

It's depressing, and frankly scary, that so few people recognise this.

I'm imagining a retrospective analysis in a decade or two. "It all started with wanting to know when to serve dinner..."

Delatron · 27/07/2026 16:18

Angelil · 27/07/2026 05:38

OK so here's why I won't be tracking any member of my family ever, and they will never be tracking me. SO unhealthy and creepy.

Dobeebeedah · 27/07/2026 15:45

There is no way on this Earth that I would agree to be tracked by anyone at any time. Never not ever no how. I have never called in to confirm my arrival/departure/location to anyone. If I want someone to know where I am and what I am doing I will contact them somehow.

My Parents never knew where I was all the time, but I told them afterwards occasionally (from 4 or 5 years old). My cousins were the same and downstairs children were the same. Nothing bad happened to any of us and we all grew up with Street and Spidey Senses that have probably served most of us well.

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 27/07/2026 15:13

my 27 year old son has me, his step dad and my 16 year old on life 360, we added him when he was keeping an eye on thge 16 year old and thought he'd just remove it but I think he likes knowing where we are :)

I would never track him like that and call him though!

Purplerain1985 · 27/07/2026 14:21

I can’t believe how many people think this is normal!.Does she not have a life of her own?.She sounds far too involved in her adult son’s whereabouts. It would be a big ick for me and very suffocating. And your partner thinks this is okay 🤐
