The planet is in charge and if Mother Earth sees fit she will rid the planet of the parasites that humans seem to be. You can’t fight nature. It will do what it needs to do. If we don’t change then our time is up.

It does not happen every year that French vinyards are razed to the ground by wildfires. This complacency is bewildering. I posted the link upthread to the NASA long term study that shows

The west consumes a lot despite our lower birth rates, that’s the point!

Unless we curb global heating, the temperatures will continue to rise. Your grandmother will last her natural life. What about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren when the temperatures keep getting hotter?

Population size is a factor but it is not a complete solution. We still have to reduce our energy consumption per person, especially of fossil fuels.

Your “deckchairs on the Titanic” comment makes it sound futile to invent new technologies and change policies. It isn’t. We know for example that insulating lofts saves energy as do numerous other routine initiatives. The UK government is in the process of approving solar panels that can go on balconies and supply free electricity to people’s homes via a standard socket. They will cost around £400 and payback will be approx 4 years.

I don’t think it is racist to want to enhance people who live in abject grinding poverty in poor countries and to lift their standard of living.

The we need more people argument is mad. I understand the arguments in relation to looking after old people. But we need to find a different way.

It happens. It happens in sicily where I have family and honestly they survive. It's not pleasant but it happens to many med countries every year. My great grandma is nearly 100 she has some stories.

The global fertility rate was approx 5 in the 50s and it’s now 2.2 ish. Birth rates have fallen

@Monty36I think you are a bit behind the times, very few countries have high birth rates now. Poorer countries have more dc and as countries get richer & more educated there is a switch. A child in Somalia does not have the same carbon footprint as a child in the west.

I don’t think it’s flippant, but I do think there is an element of racism. We must stop the poorer people having more dc and using global resources because we in the west need them more.

From an economic perspective if you want a smaller population, you don’t want a smaller & older one. You need youth.

Perhaps reducing the world population could start by engaging with some of the world faith leaders who promote having as many children as possible ?
Encourage contraception in countries. Encourage poorer countries with high birth rates to do so. Educate people.

There is a lot that could be done I am sure.

It will not happen though. We will continue to have global populations that the planet cannot sustain. Women will continue to have children they cannot feed, house, educate nor medicate. And be encouraged to have more.

The climate will ensure global populations will move en masse. As places become impossible to live in the land we all live on will reduce.

As many as many Mediterranean countries and hot countries all over the globe, and they cope. Vineyards continue to thrive and humans are good at making it work. Thats why we are still here and will be for a long time yet. Nature is amazing. Humans with too much power and greed on the other hand are more of a concern.

We have got August to get through yet.
Weather has become more extreme. Mother Nature is displeased with us. And letting us know it.
We will have to get used to it.
It is beyond the wit of those who govern many countries to do what needs to be done. To reduce the populations of the world would help. Massively.
Fewer people, fewer fossil fuels used.
