To be driven crazy by a few very, very common expressions on Mumsnet?

I know it’s from Shakespeare and not exclusive to MN, but ‘neither a lender nor a borrower be’ really grinds my gears. It just sounds so wanky when people use in day-to-day life imo.

I've just seen a thread with "mental load" in the title. 😖

Along with "life admin" in the first post.

Cannot stand either phrase. Had to resurrect this thread just to say I hate both these phrases. Another MN use of words you don't hear in real life.

I often imagine the clique members all navigating towards each other by sonar across the playground.

I just remembered 'fanny gallops'. And am very much wishing I hadn't. 😫

You get those everywhere. I used to work near a large psychiatric hospital. Years ago if you saw someone walking along the street near the hospital muttering to him/herself you knew immediately s/he was probably a current or former or future patient. Then mobile phones arrived. The other signs are still there, though.

“My little family”. Toe curlingly twee and invariably used alongside a paean to the joys of retreating from the world and dumping your friends.

“It works for us as a family,”: code for “it works for him and I don’t have the leverage to do anything about it.

”Try parenting your children”: I can’t be bothered to empathise with yoy with the situation you are facing but I really want to judge you.

I live in London where it's quite risky to make eye contact with a stranger, never mind speak to them, but am currently in a place where everybody says hello to everyone else as a matter of course. It's really lovely. Rather a contrast to MN where people claim not to answer their doors if they're not expecting a call and where an adult paying attention to a baby or toddler is an infallible sign that they are a predator.

Spot on. It's actually quite frightening how good the algorithms are at serving up more and more of the same, leading us to stick with the safe and familiar only. Decades ago we had so little choice on TV that lots of us ended up seeing things we'd not have picked for ourselves and yet often we enjoyed them and had that magic experience of being able to talk to just about anybody about what we'd been watching as half the population were doing the same - and all at the same time as there were no video recorders, never mind catch up services. God I'm old!

Yes - in real life, who is daft enough to say 'Did you mean to be so rude?' Apart from being such a therapist's cliche, it invites the other person to say 'Yes, actually I did!"

And 'No is a complete sentence". Only sometimes if you live in the real world.

I've recently been catching myself saying 'batshit' irl even though I've never heard anyone else say it irl, ever. I'm annoying myself with it, but it just keeps coming out. Maybe I need a Mumsnet break. 😂

I have also never heard of the TV show Nobody Wants This.

I have Netflix. It has never recommended this show to me.

I have Instagram. I have never been served a reel about this show.

I don't watch celebrity TV talk shows.

The newspaper content I read is largely recommended out to me through social media.

It is very easy in today's algorithm-driven world to imagine that "everyone" is watching the same thing as you, but actually we live in a series of niches. There is far less of a common culture than there was 20 or 30 years ago. TV shows are watched by far fewer people. Music is bought by far fewer. Audiences are splintered across thousands of different radio and TV channels.

Less than half of UK homes have Netflix.

I have used “Paddington stare” since I was seven. I loved the Paddington books; they are in a different league from the films. You have to read the books to understand the full effect of a well-directed Paddington Stare. (Although my dcs grumble that other people - like posters on here - don’t know that they are being reprimanded with a stare.)

I read The Times. I'm not on any social media except here. I listen to BBC Radio Three. I rarely watch television and never watch talk shows

The Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe Festival start at the beginning of August and my calendar is booked out for the whole month. I wonder have you heard of it? Or the Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Ballet. Does the Met Opera cinema screenings, Royal Ballet and Opera ring any bells with you?

What does hard Paddington stare actually mean?
“Use your words” irritates the hell out of me. We’re not toddlers Ffs.

The threads that really annoy me are those where someone is playing the victim despite potentially actually being the aggressor themselves and who give partial information that could easily be painting a misleading picture but won't fill in details in response to questions from other posters. Those threads annoy the hell out of me.

Also the threads where you get hounded off them for expressing a different opinion, usually LTB type threads that build up a huge momentum of collective rage.

I also can't stand posters who say 'you clearly don't know anything about/have no experience of x,y,z' especially when I do have knowledge or experience of x,y, z.

The only actual phrase that I can think of that annoys me are posts that start 'Man here'. Otherwise I actually love a lot of the Mumsnet cliches and have to stop myself using them in real life 😂

I never understand responses like this - Nodody Wants This was a huge success, and widely written about, with several moments achieving that ‘breaking the internet’ status. Of course you mightn’t have any interest in it or ever watch it but really, you never saw any of the many articles written in main stream newspapers, the reels on IG, the actors interviewed on talk shows? Like, you nearly couldn’t avoid it!

Perhaps not. But how does an adult exist not listening to the radio, watching TV, being on any social media or reading newspapers? All of which had copious coverage of this programme as well as the particular aspect I mentioned.

Go NC (no contact) is much, much less frequent o MN now but used to annoy me. Usually because it was over a very minor issue.
