Letter from HA about loud music?

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 19:37

So basically I received a letter from my HA about loud music causing a disturbance to other residents here.

I am the only one who received it.

I suspect my NDN reported me as I don't think who else it could be?

Surely they could have just left a polite note or approached me?

I assume this will be on my file now?

Why on earth would you think playing music in your garden wouldn't be a nuisance?!

This....

Anyone playing music in their garden that's loud enough for surrounding neighbours to hear are also showing that they're pretty inconsiderate, so maybe they didn't want to approach you.

PoliteSquid · 24/07/2026 21:46

Playing music outside is ALWAYS a nuisance. For that alone YABU.

LondonLass2026 · 24/07/2026 21:42

My neighbour plays music extremely loudly. I only haven't reported her because we want to sell soon. The council told me that a letter comes first, then a visit if the letter is ignored, and then a "black mark against the property", but not sure what that means.

Any number of people could report her. Our friends way down the road say they can hear her music, and they're the equivalent of 4 or 5 houses away. She also sits in the car, inexplicably blasting music without going anywhere.

My partner has politely asked her many times to turn it down, he even says we don't mind if it were the odd party but it isn't - she drinks alone every night and turns the music up louder and louder - and every time he texts, she replies "oh fuck off!" then apologises when she's sober, rinse and repeat.

If she had a knock from the council, it'd be the least she deserves.

So then move somewhere rural. Ffs the same people who whinge about kids playing in the street, people having bbqs (with no music) but hearing conversation and laughter.

This line is always trotted out as if everyone has the money to buy somewhere in the countryside...

I play music in my garden. Not an issue. But I do not disturb my neighbours with it. When I put it on, I make a point of walking to their fence and making sure it isn't audible from there. Just try to be a bit more considerate.

That's really considerate. However if you are in a terraced property, it will always be audible...

Well we need the honesty about the music. Do you have a surround sound speaker/alexa full blast or is it low level background music.

For those saying dont play music, behave!!! Everyone is allowed to enjoy their own garden. Being a nuisance is loud music from morning til night. Normal is a kitchen (assuming its on the rear of the property) speaker louder than you would inside.

Wear headphones???? Seriously.....

Did you mean to say louder than you would inside? Surely you mean quieter otherwise it's still very selfish.

LastOnePlease · 24/07/2026 21:37

OP please take this on board. We have a neighbour who does this, luckily it is not as loud as the previous set but there is nothing we can do as she owns her house. It's not just the music that makes it unpleasant, it's feeling on edge not knowing when it will start. Recently, the neighbours the other side of her got fed up and turned their music up but she just turned hers up louder. Often it's opera or something else with a loud beat that's actually really hard to block out. I wear headphones in the garden when I want to play music and now they are essential because of her. Everyone else here is so respectful. When she is out, all you can hear are the birds or people chatting and having a glass of wine. It's lovely and then she comes back and everyone else has to go inside. She also laughs about it and talks to people on the phone about what she is doing. It genuinely is awful to live next to. Quite often she will put the radio on at maximum volume outsider her patio doors and then go to the end of her garden and read a book. So we all get the noise blasting at us while she enjoys it from a distance...

NewGoldFox · 24/07/2026 21:34

I suppose if you aren’t considerate/bright enough to consider using headphones they thought best not to engage.

On my HA file if I ever require a landlord reference from them?

I do play music in the garden at times but surely if it was a nuisance they could have asked me via the neighbours hood WhatsApp group/ Facebook group?

You don't play music outdoors where other people haven't consented to it. The onus is on you asking permission, not on them telling you it's a nuisance. It's a nuisance by default.

Hope that helps.

This. ^ It's extremely arrogant to assume that everyone wants to hear YOUR music.

It's much worse than that, because people who play loud music just don't care whether anyone else wants to hear their music or not. They think only their own wants matter, no one else's. It's sociopathic, not just inconsiderate.

Why should other people (who also want to relax in their garden) have to listen to your music. Get headphones, it's not hard.

To be honest, I would assume that anyone antisocial enough to frequently play loud music in their garden would probably not be receptive to someone knocking on the door to ask them to stop. Did you really not think it might be really annoying for people living near you??

This 100%! The person is clearly an ignorant, selfish idiot. Id assume aggressive too.

greencatwitch · 24/07/2026 21:26

Instead of criticising the neighbours who reported you what you should be doing is reflecting on the fact that you have been causing nuisance with your loud music.

Your neighbour don't owe you any kind of 'courtesy' in this case.

You created the problem through your lack of consideration for others.

Stop being so entitled.

Housing associations expect adults to be able to attempt basic conversations themselves in the first instance.

What utter rubbish.

All sorts of people live in HA accommodation encompassing a wide spectrum of needs amongst them. To say there's "an expectation" to speak directly to a problem neighbour rather than go through the proper channels of the HA is as irresponsible as it is untrue and could cause someone reading such nonsense and believing it genuine anxiety.

MaryBeardsShoes · 24/07/2026 21:14

There are properties near me where the residents play music with thumping bass all day, or they blast 90s cheese out the window. I wouldn’t approach them as surely they must know it’s not reasonable, and they don’t give a shit. I would also be worried about a reaction. Thankful I don’t hear it so much in my house.

Just get some headphones.

My neighbour used to play loud music late at night. When he got a letter from the council he complained to me that "all you had to do was knock on my door and ask". Yep, all I had to do was go out in the middle of the night, in my pyjamas and knock on a strangers door.

Turn your music down. It isn't your neighbour's responsibility to inconvenience herself to let you know how to behave.

PhaedraTwo · 24/07/2026 21:06

Backedoffhackedoff · 24/07/2026 19:40

well, the housing association will have a copy of the letter on your account, yes. That doesn’t mean anything though.

it would’ve been better if they’d spoken to you but loads and loads of people don’t have the confidence to do that and would rather waste a companies time instead 🙄
why don’t you pop round say sorry and keep it down? That’s the mature thing to do

They are not wasting the Housing Association's time. Dealing with antisocial tenants is part of their management responsibilities.

The OP isn't coming across as someone who would act reasonably if a complaint had been made direct.

Ethelspagetti · 24/07/2026 21:03

Stop playing music in the garden and you won’t get anymore.

itgetsthehoseagain · 24/07/2026 20:59

Don't play music in your garden. No reasonable person I knows ever has. Self-obsessed, classless, chaotic folk do.

LlynTegid · 24/07/2026 20:51

If you are playing music which contains foul, misogynistic or racist language, zero sympathy.

Smellmyfart · 24/07/2026 20:51

Your neighbours shouldn't have to approach you to tell you to turn your music down.

You should be considerate and think about the level of the music you are playing.. play it at a level that you can hear but your neighbours can't or put some headphones on.

Canonlythinkofthisone · 24/07/2026 20:51

So weird isn't it.
Neighbour doesn't want to he friends with the person playing loud, inappropriate music, in their garden. When they have kids and probably assume you're an ignorant aggressive person.
I'm as confused as you...

Yes it is a nuisance. Your poor neighbours. I hope you reflect and put headphones on in future but I worry that you still think this is ok to ruin everyones peace.

Chalotte · 24/07/2026 20:50

Listening to music outdoors is really antisocial, sound carries a long way especially at quiet times. If you stop doing it, hopefully that will be the end of the problem.
