Letter from HA about loud music?

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 19:37

So basically I received a letter from my HA about loud music causing a disturbance to other residents here.

I am the only one who received it.

I suspect my NDN reported me as I don't think who else it could be?

Surely they could have just left a polite note or approached me?

I assume this will be on my file now?

Usually noise complaints require evidence , recordings, a diary etc. before HA would send a letter. It's unlikely you have received a letter from your HA for occasional music, even with explicit lyrics.

Indeed. There's no way this is as a result of a one off complaint.

JapanesePotWeed · 25/07/2026 00:33

A Council letter really is THE polite way of going about it. Less personal also.

When my neighbours got too loose with their speakers and I had suffered silently for quite some time, I went full on angry pay-back mode.
I created a playlist called "neighbours" with the worst grime rap and death metal available, would start it up next to their bedroom wall at 7am, another speaker downstairs and then leave for work.
If they were barbecuing and blasting their crap for hours (it can only be described as a cross between Islamic prayer calls, Euro clubbing trash and Greek wedding music), I'd get out my concrete cutter and cut bricks right next to the fence, sending dust and noise all over. If the music stopped - I stopped. If it started again - I started cutting too.
Much more satisfying than waiting on a family of ill-mannered brutes to self regulate.

Skippythemeh · 25/07/2026 00:07

Why did you need to be told not to play loud music outside, or inside for that matter? Did you not think that everyone would want to enjoy their gardens? And were you playing music with bad language?

Nothing wrong with quiet background music that you can just hear. But anything louder means your neighbourhood also needs to hear it so can’t enjoy being outside.

And no one told you because folk don’t like to approach anti-social people. I’m sure you told your boyfriend about the letter when you got it, so he knew the issue when he went and turned it up. That sounds like an anti social person I wouldn’t want to talk to directly as he clearly doesn’t give a shit, and he is your boyfriend so I wouldn’t think much better of you.

Tinks2026 · 24/07/2026 23:59

You already know you're antisocial and ill mannered and so do they. No point in "approaching" to ask you to stop doing what you know you shouldn't be doing. Best just to report.

The kind of people who play music at anti-social levels generally aren't the most approachable of people. Your neighbours are probably too scared of your reaction.

Ponderingwindow · 24/07/2026 23:49

In my experience, no person who plays music at antisocial levels has ever responded positively to a polite request to turn down the music. At this point in my life, I would just contact the landlord.

obviously It’s a nuisance. Music doesn’t stop at the fence. You’re forcing all your neighbours to listen to your choice of music. You’re saying your wishes are more important than theirs.

it astonishes me that people can’t work this out - or are just selfish antisocial arseholes who don’t give a fuck about anyone else.

GreyBeeplus3 · 24/07/2026 23:28

@autumnbeee
I'm with a HA and what you've said somehow doesn't sit right with me
I know no 2 HA are the same but first I'd have thought your housing officer would've spoken to you then if you continued with the music
You'd have been sent a letter
But
All tenants would've got one reminding them about being a good neighbour etc whilst yours would be more specific
Are you sure it is a letter from the HA?
We had trouble with a aggressive neighbour and when her house burnt down we were accused and sent bogus letters informing us we'd have to go as we'd started the blaze
But
The Fire brigade sent their report to the HA as quickly as we'd sent in the "post" we recieved and of course she and son had started the fire themselves-motorbike petrol/ cigarettes
And that
She'd sent us the letters too
What does your HA stationery actually look like?
Speak to your Housing Officer
You may get accused of much worse if this is someone trying a fast one

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 23:09

Yes the music has been kept low now.

When my boyfriend came over the other day he tried to put it up and I turned it back down immediately.

I honestly didn't mean to annoy anyone.

People are often told not to write notes because it’s seen as passive aggressive and weasly and “they should say it to my face”. Then again, actually saying things to people’s faces can end up very badly because some people are absolute horrors. Anything directed at children/ hedges/ parking/ their “castle” sends some people into a frenzy.

I understand them going to the HA although I would probably have tried a very polite word with you first, - unless you have a brace of American bullies and scream at your kids and smoke weed in the garden in which case I wouldn’t risk it.

PhaedraTwo · 24/07/2026 23:00

What's HA, and what file, and how do you know you're the only one?

HA =Housing Association
File - any record of complaints, which if serious enough could and should lead to eviction.

OP will be only one if she's the only 9ne one bevahing in an antisocial way.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 24/07/2026 23:00

So OP, are you going to keep the music down as requested? You’ve not said, you’ve only speculated about who it might have been, and you’ve told us about how your chief suspect doesn’t talk to you.

But you’ve not said you’re going to do anything. This is why she or he went via the housing office.

Given how many people here at MN seem to have problems speaking up, I'm not surprised a neighbor might have been leery about approaching you.

Why don't you approach your neighbor? Say nicely you're sorry if they were disturbed, and provide your telephone number to let you know directly of any future problem.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 24/07/2026 22:51

How about not being an inconsiderate twerp and having some respect for other people's peace and quiet?

Could you not have worked out for yourself that blasting loud music outdoors might be a pain in the arse for those living near you?
You’re seriously just worried about a reference? Just turn it off or go indoors.

They shouldn’t have to, surely you know loud music in close proximity to others is anti social?

covilha · 24/07/2026 22:46

@autumnbeee
And surely you know the playing your music in the garden is a nuisance? Why on earth should other people have to remind of your manners, you sound as though you are blaming them for your lack of consideration.
wear headphones if you want to listen to music outside.

PhaedraTwo · 24/07/2026 22:46

Minasama · 24/07/2026 22:41

Many people who play loud music won’t respond to a complaint with “oh I’m so sorry, we’ll be sure to keep it down in future.”

Hand on heart, is that what you would have said? Or would you have responded defensively or by questioning them like you are doing now?

Given this, it’s clearly easier to go via HA.

I'm astonished at the poster who claims that she has 20 years experience in housing insisting that neighbours should sort this out.

My tenant who was having a problem with a neighbour in an HA flat reported it to me because as her landlord I have a responsibility to her. The HA were absolutely clear my tenant should go direct to them, not their tenant. They even issued a stock of pro forma incident reports.

Please don't play loud music in the garden it's extremely anti social.
Do you do it regularly? If so perhaps they had just had enough and thought complaining to the HA would make sure you stopped doing it

geumsun · 24/07/2026 22:37

Stop playing shit music in your garden.

When you play music, if anyone other than you and yours can hear it, it's unacceptable.

People worry about the reaction they might get if they complain to your face, that’s why they’ve reported it to your HA

Backedoffhackedoff · 24/07/2026 22:35

PhaedraTwo · 24/07/2026 22:34

My tenant does not owe the HA or their tenant anything other than to behave in a reasonable manner towards her neighbour. It's up to the HA to deal with their tenant who failed to show the same responsibility.

The HA in question, unlike you, were clear my tenant should speak direct to them, not their tenant.

Oh and there's nothing wrong with calling the police if your neighbour is behaving in a antisocial way.

Edited

You would call the police because a neighbour was playing music in the garden?

jesus Christ. Where did you learn what the police are for?
