AIBU to dispute Rover charge after pet sitter failed agreed care?

I booked X through Rover to provide in-home pet sitting for one week at a cost of £431.
Before the booking, i met with the sitter, showed her the house and Pets and talked everything through. I provided a clear written routine for my dog. This included three walks each day: a morning walk, an evening walk and a short bedtime walk. I checked in with X regularly during the booking, and she did not tell me that she was unable or unwilling to follow this routine.
When I returned home, I found a hole in the stair wall, dirty floors, an unmade bed with a wet towel left on it, extensive dog mess throughout the garden and dried dog food left on a disposable plate, which the sitter would have had to dig through my
cupboard to even find it which is odd. It would have slipped on the tiled floor making it impossible for my dog to properly eat. My dog has a ceramic bowl and a designated area to eat which I showed her, so this makes no sense to me.
My dog had also urinated on carpets across four rooms and appeared distressed, panting and temporarily unable to bark.
After I reviewed the ring door bell footage, X later admitted in writing that she had not followed the agreed walking schedule. She said that during the first part of the booking she had skipped the bedtime walk, and during the second part my dog had received very limited walks. She confirmed that my dog had not been walked at all during the final two days and had only been allowed into the garden.
X initially offered a full refund through Rover and confirmed this in writing. I therefore contacted Rover and submitted a detailed complaint, including photographs, written statements and screenshots of X admitting that she had not provided the agreed care.
Despite repeated telephone calls and emails, Rover did not promptly resolve the complaint. X subsequently withdrew her offer of a full refund and stated that she had decided to offer only £120 because she had “walked the dog approximately 10 times but can’t remember” and cared for the car and house.
I did not accept the £120 offer because the service provided was substantially different from the service booked. The agreed walking routine was not followed, there were no walks during the final two days, my dog urinated throughout the house, and the property was left damaged and in an unacceptable condition.
AIBU to raise a credit card dispute? Is this futile? I’m utterly bemused as to how an incompetent and unsafe sitter can decide their refund amount!

The difficulty is that it’s difficult to prove anything. I feel weird about sitting if there are cameras in the house, because I can’t relax and feel like I’m in Big Brother, but I can see why people do it. We know she didn’t sleep there because the bed clearly hadn’t been slept in, and there were stains all over the wood floor where the dogs had weed because she hadn’t been there to let them out. But she just argued she had been there. She also claimed we’d given her permission to ride the horses, we absolutely had not and not only that, she’d had her partner over with his kids and they’d been riding too! Then the silly cow put photos on her business Facebook page of them all riding around the arena (including her partner AND one of his kids on the same horse). They damaged a very expensive brand new saddle, in the photos the horses were all tacked up incorrectly, and they even used our riding hats and clothes! But she just argued (successfully) with NARPS who she was registered with that we’d said all that was fine to do.

As for the cat, to be fair he was old and wouldn’t have lasted much longer. But whilst we were away he developed an abscess on his head which she didn’t notice or do anything about, and was too ill to go downstairs to go out, so spent his last days in the bathroom in a lot of pain, the bath mat was soaked with piss. He had to be put to sleep as soon as we got back and saw the state of him.

But yeah, she got away Scot free, and believe me we REALLY tried to hold her accountable.

How awful that your poor animals (and you) were treated so badly. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to come back to find what you did.

elastamum · 24/07/2026 15:45

I used to use Animal Aunts for dogs and horses. They were really good and the house and pets really well looked after. However, they are not cheap, but I think it is worth it.

alwaysusethebiglight · 24/07/2026 15:34

I’d push the insurance angle for the damage caused.m, especially if you can prove it wasn’t like that before you went away. Maybe even the small claims court.

As a sitter for TrustedHousesitters, they checked our identities pretty thoroughly, required references from previous sits (either professional or friends/family) and the service recipients provide references when you have taken care of their pets. They seem very professional.

They do all this on Rover too. But it’s easy enough to get a few mates to say you’re good with animals.

It’s infuriating, we had a sitter years ago (not through Rover) who didn’t stay at the house, killed the cat, rode the horses without permission, damaged our property…the list goes on. Never got a penny or even an apology from the sitter when caught out.

That sounds horrific. How can these people be allowed to get away with it? Could you have proved any criminality - animal cruelty or the like?

And yet Ariana Rose was on TrustedHousesitters....

Wow, just googled her! I take your point 😮

Reading that makes my heart ache - your poor dog.

I’ve heard some very mixed things about Rover, this was after I’d contacted someone, discussed details with them, tried to sort a date and then radio silence. That was enough to put me off.

I would email Rover to say that have 7 days to reimburse you in full for the booking, and that you are currently obtaining quotes to get your carpets cleaned and any repairs made due to the negligence of one of their sitters.
I’d absolute do small claims court for it all if they mess you around. I’d also be putting this on local Facebook pages as well to make people aware. I’d also contact the press I’d be so enraged!

I can’t imagine having someone’s pet to look after and just not doing it, not caring enough to not do your best for them.

That happened to me with Rover. Exactly the same, radio silence. She then messaged a week later (after we’d found someone else) apologising with some long fangled story etc. I tried giving the benefit of the doubt and rearranged another slot but she did it again so gave up.

mondaytosunday · 24/07/2026 13:45

i and two friends use Trustedhousesitters.com. Never had an issue. And after the registration fee it’s free - you don’t pay the sitter. I get daily pix of my animals and the house is always tidy when I return and pets happy (two dogs and two cats last time I used them). My friends have been happy with the service too.

BillieWiper · 24/07/2026 13:16

So what's the point in them as a business when they have no responsibility for the quality of the work or refunds? You may as well just find a random on gumtree.

slowingdown1 · 24/07/2026 02:37

thank you 🥹she’s ok now. She was very, very distressed though. Panting so heavily I was worried and had lost her bark. Took about 3 days for her to calm down and stop frantically following me around. Back garden is utterly tiny, so to have been confined in the house and only allowed there for the last 2.5 days is so sad. And no bedtime stroll along the pavement all week. It’s just so cruel and odd, it was an easy job and I was (I think) kind and welcoming and made it clear she could have a friend over, access to Sky movies, log fire etc. I’ll never know what went wrong but something did.

Losing her bark suggests to me that she was actually left alone for long periods, ditto the following you around.

Hankunamatata · 24/07/2026 13:04

Could you try through small claims court?

I don’t think any living being should “cope with a bit of neglect”. I can only hope you don’t work with humans or animals. The sad part was she hadn’t been able to eat; the paper plate was covered in dried food meaning she had not been able to eat it, likely because the plate was sliding around the tiled floor.

I'm guessing that Rover is a bit like AirBnB, people are suckered into trusting them because of the slick website but individual arseholes can register and get business through them.

Absolutely raise hell OP, not just for your refund but to stop other animals from suffering like yours did. The sitter needs to be perma-banned.

I've heard too many bad stories about Rover and Trusted Housesitters now that I will never, ever use them. Thankfully my dog is very content in kennels.

You think its reasonable for OP to pay £431 for "a bit of neglect", dog wee all over her carpets and dog shit not being cleared up in the garden?

🙄

How absolutely awful for you and your dog. I am so sorry that this has happened to you and really disappointed that this particular dog sitter did not have any respect for you, your dog or indeed your home. I am a dog sitter and I abide by every single instruction given to me. I leave the home clean and tidy, in fact one of my client’s asked which bed had I slept in because everything was so tidy! I also take a little toy for the dog to keep that I am looking after. It’s just my thing!

I take lots of photos and videos daily, I even make them into little funny stories and captions, because I am a dog lover and owner, but mainly because I care!

You sound perfect! I wish more were like you, then I’d not struggle to find someone

Post up your complaint on Trustpilot, and threaten to go to small claims court to recover money for damages for breach of contract and damage to your house and garden.

Ellie1015 · 24/07/2026 09:54

Awful, I would expect a full refund and assurance from Rover they would not be using this pet sitter anymore. Your poor dog.

BiteSizedLife · 24/07/2026 09:10

What the duck

and that is only what you witnessed. Your poor dog I'd wonder if she was even kind to him.

I had a horrible experience with Rover. Just clicking on this thread gave me PTSD. Nothing useful to add apart from good on you for disputing their nonsense T&C’s
