AIBU to dispute Rover charge after pet sitter failed agreed care?

I booked X through Rover to provide in-home pet sitting for one week at a cost of £431.
Before the booking, i met with the sitter, showed her the house and Pets and talked everything through. I provided a clear written routine for my dog. This included three walks each day: a morning walk, an evening walk and a short bedtime walk. I checked in with X regularly during the booking, and she did not tell me that she was unable or unwilling to follow this routine.
When I returned home, I found a hole in the stair wall, dirty floors, an unmade bed with a wet towel left on it, extensive dog mess throughout the garden and dried dog food left on a disposable plate, which the sitter would have had to dig through my
cupboard to even find it which is odd. It would have slipped on the tiled floor making it impossible for my dog to properly eat. My dog has a ceramic bowl and a designated area to eat which I showed her, so this makes no sense to me.
My dog had also urinated on carpets across four rooms and appeared distressed, panting and temporarily unable to bark.
After I reviewed the ring door bell footage, X later admitted in writing that she had not followed the agreed walking schedule. She said that during the first part of the booking she had skipped the bedtime walk, and during the second part my dog had received very limited walks. She confirmed that my dog had not been walked at all during the final two days and had only been allowed into the garden.
X initially offered a full refund through Rover and confirmed this in writing. I therefore contacted Rover and submitted a detailed complaint, including photographs, written statements and screenshots of X admitting that she had not provided the agreed care.
Despite repeated telephone calls and emails, Rover did not promptly resolve the complaint. X subsequently withdrew her offer of a full refund and stated that she had decided to offer only £120 because she had “walked the dog approximately 10 times but can’t remember” and cared for the car and house.
I did not accept the £120 offer because the service provided was substantially different from the service booked. The agreed walking routine was not followed, there were no walks during the final two days, my dog urinated throughout the house, and the property was left damaged and in an unacceptable condition.
AIBU to raise a credit card dispute? Is this futile? I’m utterly bemused as to how an incompetent and unsafe sitter can decide their refund amount!

I submitted all this (with photo evidence) and they have come
back to say the sitter determines the refund amount. I feel like I’ve fallen down a hole in Alice in Wonderland!

Send them a legal letter before action. Make it clear you have a solicitor and are going to sue. That you intend to have a full refund and new carpets and house repairs plus compensation for distress. I think they will swiftly make an offer.

As for the cat, to be fair he was old and wouldn’t have lasted much longer. But whilst we were away he developed an abscess on his head which she didn’t notice or do anything about, and was too ill to go downstairs to go out, so spent his last days in the bathroom in a lot of pain, the bath mat was soaked with piss. He had to be put to sleep as soon as we got back and saw the state of him

.Oh Shock that is one of the saddest things I have read. I know cats can be very insular and recalcitrant ( I have two) but it is unbearable to think how his last days panned out because his sitter didn't think "Hmm the cat's acting a bit odd" and investigate .

Buildingthefuture · 24/07/2026 19:46

It is incredibly, incredibly difficult to find decent, reliable dog sitters. Lots of people promise the earth but do not deliver, as you have discovered op. It is the ONLY thing that makes me think I won’t have dogs in the future, because it is so ridiculously difficult, despite paying vast sums of money, to find anyone remotely competent and reliable.

CountryMouse22 · 24/07/2026 19:45

You are NOT being unreasonable. It sounds like a nightmare appointment and I can't see how they could ever begin to repair the damage. And I am still reeling about the price!

Schoolchoicesucks · 24/07/2026 19:41

Gosh that's shocking, your poor dog.
Initially I was wondering if there was any reason for fewer walks - eg due to the heatwave and not being able to take the dog out other than very early morning or late night - but there's no excuse for the absolute neglect of your dog and the impact on your home.
I'm glad your dog is recovering. If nothing else, at least you are making people aware of the risks of using a service like that. Word or mouth sitters or regulated kennels clearly the only way to go.

foodiefil · 24/07/2026 19:32

Take photos and go to the media I promise you they will be interested and shame this awful company and person I am so sorry your poor dog!!! I’d do time if it was my dog. Actually no I wouldn’t cos I’d miss my dog but my god I would be so angry!!!

Mydogisagentleman · 24/07/2026 06:57

Can't come. Of course he can't comment

But if he could he’d say “thank you for not leaving me with the Rover lady”

MyDeftDuck · 24/07/2026 19:19

This is appalling OP, your poor dog must have been distraught to have their routine broken and you’d gone to extreme lengths to get it organised and had faith that the dog would be well looked after. Dreadful service and one to avoid MNetters!

Yeo. They should only allow verified reviews, so once a session has been finished.

They do once you’re up and running, but to register on there you have to get reviews from people you know, so could be your mum or whoever.

eviesparrowcottage · 24/07/2026 19:19

You are not being unreasonable at all. The company shouldn't let this person dog sit for them anymore! Do you have TikTok? Honestly if I were you I would create a video explaining everything and tag Rover in it. If it gets traction it wouldn't take long for them to do something about it! They would hate the negative press and try to rectify the situation (hopefully!)
If you create a video let us know and post it here so we can help you spread it.

i and two friends use Trustedhousesitters.com. Never had an issue. And after the registration fee it’s free - you don’t pay the sitter. I get daily pix of my animals and the house is always tidy when I return and pets happy (two dogs and two cats last time I used them). My friends have been happy with the service too.

I used trustedhousesitters a few years ago. My sitter told me she had to leave early in the morning of the day I was due back. I said that was fine, just put down extra food for my cats, and lock up etc.

Got home around 5ish to find she’d left my front door not only unlocked but wide open. For 10 hours. On a busy road in London.

Obviously I complained, sent photos etc. THS could not have been less interested. Accused me of staging the photo (like I had nothing better to do while dealing with jet lag and three weeks’ worth of laundry). At least the cats seemed ok…

21ZIGGY · 24/07/2026 19:13

I would post this far and wide and sue the fuck out of her and rover

GreggsistentialCrisis · 24/07/2026 19:03

Owwdi · 24/07/2026 15:30

They do all this on Rover too. But it’s easy enough to get a few mates to say you’re good with animals.

vegemitesandwiches · 24/07/2026 19:02

This is awful. I am so sorry your dog went through this.

However, Rover is just a directory/website. Anyone can upload their details on there - it doesn't mean they have experience or insurance or are in any way qualified to work with animals. The "Rover Guarantee" isn't worth the paper its' written on - all sitters in the UK need their own private insurance policy.

Please never, ever use Rover again. Look for a reputable company who can show you proof of insurance, qualifications and first aid training, and proper, verified reviews and photos from happy customers.

Chattanoogachoo · 24/07/2026 18:54

So sorry to hear of your experience.I went on holiday recently and my daughter moved in to look after my elderly dog.He was treated well but still got stressed, panting and lost his bark.
Your poor dog wasn't treated well and I really sympathize.

PolkaDotPorridge · 24/07/2026 18:50

I would be arrested because she would be in receipt of some bruises. What a cruel bitch.

Anyahyacinth · 24/07/2026 18:49

Sounds absolutely awful definitely dispute and take further.

I thought perhaps it was during the heatwave when walking wasn't advised but no excuses for not keeping clean and toileted ...what an awful situation to return to.

Who was your contract with? The company/person you employed is the who is due you a refund due to breach of contract

I have left an honest review which doesn’t not seem to have been published on the site yet 🧐

Do it on Trustpilot. Rover will then have to post a reply if they don’t want the negative publicity.

Marieb19 · 24/07/2026 18:43

This is an appaling situation and Rover can't dodge its responsibilities as the management company. Write this review on Trustpilot. I find companies go out of their way to deal with complaints. I would also show this communication stream to Rover. I've never heard of them but I certainly wouldn't use them on the back of your experience. If you still don't get satisfaction, I'd let them know you will be taking them to the small claims court and will also seek compensation for cleaning bills etc.

Smallfamilyofbadgers · 24/07/2026 18:43

That’s dreadful and really gives us sitters a bad name! Did you not receive Rover cards which are gps tracked for walks. I’m a cat sitter and still send rover cards to all my clients.
I have star sitter status and make sure I honour all of my bookings. I’m very proud of my 5* reviews and have built up quite a few regulars.
I would pursue it through the small claims court if you get no joy with credit card.
Breaks my heart to think an animal was poorly treated by someone who’s getting paid to do a job.

WaryCyanStork · 24/07/2026 18:34

Keep pushing with Rover. They definitely can refund you.

My friend was a Rover sitter. She had money deducted from her pay when she couldn't get the carpets perfectly clean after a dog had diarrhoea (which started before the sit but the owners went away anyway!) I guess Rover are just awful to both sitters and owners.

Kaney19 · 24/07/2026 18:27

I had a really awful experience with Rover. The whole thing was utterly tragic. It was a sitter for 6 hours, for a funeral. I had no choice but to take the dogs with me, and I couldnt get hold of the sitter. My nans funeral was in 2 hours at this point. I phoned Rover, who couldnt help, and in the end a friend helped out. For clarity, I moved to a different country, and the funeral was in my home town, hence my friend stepping in. It turned out that the sitter had taken her own life which is truly awful, but Rover, not knowing this, did nothing to help. They had their money and gave not one don't shiny shite.

I appreciate the upset, I really do, but I don't think you'll get anywhere with them. They're a disaster of a company, focused on money, not animals.

We have 4 dogs and I'm very particular about who I leave them with after that experience.

Where are you based? Id love to help with your pup if you're close by.

Sending you so much love xxx

CrayonCritic · 24/07/2026 18:24

I recommend visiting pet sitting threads on Reddit to get more specific advice on how to deal with Rover. There are a lot of active people on there. I am a pet sitter myself and I do it for free through another app (it’s a value exchange that you can stay in the house). Me and all the sitters on the same app who Ive connected with online have extremely high standards, so it’s disgusting to see someone being paid for it being so neglectful and also giving us a bad name.

EmmaB1309 · 24/07/2026 18:23

Your poor dog! And how stressful for you.
Definitely do not let this go. And negative social media reviews if you can.
