To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

I think it’s normal to share although if it was a longer trip I wouldn’t necessarily want to. I mean…. What about camping? Most people all sleep in one tent let alone one room!

Let me guess.... you are THAT 15 year old? Stay at home with garnny, dear, while your family goes on holiday.

You are suggesting basically paying for two rooms instead of one because a teenager is too precious about her dad seeing her in her underwear. Terrible, I know.

Dismal. No-one wants to live on top of their parents when they’re 15, listen to them snoring etc

I’m suggesting you stop being so tight. And if you can’t afford another room, which is fine, camp instead - at least they can have their own tent and their own space.

BigBrownBoogyingBear · 23/07/2026 21:01

We're spending 15 nights on holiday this summer (road trip!) and we're all sharing a room (me, DH, DS16 and DS13). We did the same last year. It's not ideal but it means we can stay away for longer and visit more places!

We change in the bathroom, go for a walk while DC chill etc.

I assume you also think it's ridiculous for this family of 4 to live in anything bigger than a one bedroom flat?

You assume wrong. Next!

Ridiculous to expect to pay for a separate room for 15 year old!

Ok so the teenager doesn't get a holiday at all if parents can't afford to pay for a second room. It's not automatically being tight

Or maybe leaver her at home with grandparents staying then she hmcan happily have her own room by herself

snap

Absolutely ridiculous to expect a 15 year old not to have their own room. Who the hell would ever want to share with their parents at that age. If you’re too tight to pay for their own space then stay at home.

I took my 16 yr old b/g twins to London & the 3 of us shared a family hotel room for 4 nights. Couldn’t have afforded it otherwise. We all just got changed in the bathroom. Wasn’t an issue. But if your DD is uncomfortable she can’t help that & her feelings matter too!
As a family of 5 (2 DS, 1DD) it was often difficult & expensive for us to stay in hotels (2 rooms would be required) so we tended to get an apartment with at least 1 bedroom then 2 as DC got older. Could you do that?

The OP still hasn't come back to explain what the room situation actually was, how long for ,and the kind of holiday she was actually talking about.

It matters a lot to reply if the DD should suck it up for one night or if it's miserable to be stuck with family in the same room for 2 weeks.

Exactly, for a one-night stopover on the way somewhere it's fine. For a week or more I'd honestly rather not go on holiday and I'm not surprised if the daughter feels the same. I've been on extended family holidays to places that aren't really big enough enough times to know it can be bloody miserable.

Peonies12 · 23/07/2026 20:55

Sounds like an awful holiday all sharing one room! She is nearly an adult, she shouldn’t have to share with her parents and a toddler.

My DS 17 and DD 14 shared a family room with us on holiday this year. As long as we are paying - they get what they get.

Or they don’t bother. That would have been my choice at 17.

Do me a favour. I’ve never ever come across siblings not sharing. My boys and DD share a room, 16,20,23 I wouldn’t and haven’t ever given them the option not to

I’m away with my DS soon and we’ll share a room - I’m not getting 2 rooms that’s for sure

I don’t need to do YOU or anyone a favour
my family
my choice

my sons are 7 and 14
I wouldn’t expect her to share with the boys or her dad

I've shared a room with my 22vyear old son on holiday . It was no big deal.

Morepositivemum · 23/07/2026 20:49

Maybe sexist, but I honestly think common sense goes out the window with men it comes to money. They try to get everything done on the tiniest shoestring ever- my friends have told stories of their dhes having everyone share meals on holidays, but to insane extents, or like you, a family room when two are needed - I never know if it’s that women are willing to spend more and know it can be managed or whether men are honestly trying to stop all the money going … but perhaps going overboard!! If you can afford it at all, definitely go two rooms!!

Bacmarketphonerobbers · 23/07/2026 20:48

Not at that age; I wouldn’t expect her to share a room with everyone.

in 2024 we shared a hotel room for one night. DD17, DD13, DH and me. we were all jet lagged; it was a nightmare. I remember going to lay in the bath tub. I couldn’t sleep and it was one or another making noises. Never again.

On the way back we stopped in Japan and the girls had their own room and DH and I our room, it was a bliss,

We normally do self catering apartments for more space

Last time i went on holiday i was 14, and i'd have preferred to be in with my mum, dad and older sister, but my gran and aunt invited themselves along so instead of one family room or parents in one me and sister in another, it was 3 to a room. 2 singles, and a pull out armchair thing. So mum and dad had their singles pushed as a double with sister on their pull out, i was in with my aunt and grandmother. Could have had it me sister and dad, but that would have had my mum on the pull out in the other room (aunt is a selfish cow and wouldn't have alternated) and i wasn't having that so volunteered.

Genuinely don't see why even a teen girl would have an issue with her own bio dad.

Besides usual privacy issues, and no,it’s not just about getting changed, maybe her dad snores badly? DD genuinely wouldn’t be able to sleep in the same room as him.

Yes DH is being unreasonable. The poll is a bit confusing because you’re not being unreasonable. I voted YABU, because that’s the best sense I could make of your post.

Me too - your DH is being unseasonable so I voted YABU as I think that’s what you meant?!

BranClaps · 23/07/2026 20:39

When we go away the kids share a room (boy and girl, much younger) but we have a separate bedroom. I couldn’t sleep with all four of us in the same room.

Plus how can you be intimated with your children in the room?

Always get a family room when away and never had any issues with teens - boy17 girl20. They get their own beds. And we save money to spend on experiences instead..
