To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

She feels how she feels. Her feelings are valid.

Dismal. No-one wants to live on top of their parents when they’re 15, listen to them snoring etc

I’m suggesting you stop being so tight. And if you can’t afford another room, which is fine, camp instead - at least they can have their own tent and their own space.

Very funny.

hay5689 · 23/07/2026 21:19

Back when I worked in hotels a 15 year old wouldn’t have been able to stay in a room by herself. I don’t know where you are going OP but it’s worth checking the age restrictions before falling out over this.

Poor mollycoddled kid. I first went to Paris on my own when I was 17. I was meeting friends but I was there alone for a couple of days first. It was amazing.

Shockingly, one can do both. I holidayed with my parents and with my mates at that stage.

MerryUmberHedgehog · 23/07/2026 21:19

Get it but I recall we had a family room once. Me, DH and 3 DD aged 15, 13 and 11.

Worthwords · 23/07/2026 21:19

I never shared with my parents, dad was a terrible snorer and I couldn't have slept a wink. I remember me and my siblings sharing and my parents always having a separate room. I do the same with my kids now, there is often a family room option that has separate spaces with a wall in between or connecting rooms. Everyone needs their space, teens especially!

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/07/2026 21:17

Heck no, that would be a terrible holiday.

Yes that too. DS17 chose to come

I think family rooms just aren’t big enough for two adults and two teen dc. We always book two rooms now. More often than not, teen DS and DD share as they get on well but we would be stifled in a room for four.

BlossomValley · 23/07/2026 21:14

Haven’t read the whole thread but, due to the children’s large age gap, have to ask… is he your older daughter’s biological father?

Shinyhappyapple · 23/07/2026 21:13

I think sharing a hotel room is fine for a couple of nights but for a week or more I can’t see what’s enjoyable about everyone being squished into one room. I would be looking for an apartment - even if it’s a one bedded one with someone sleeping on the sofa gives a lot more space.

Camping? That's not a holiday.

Wonder if the 15 year old will be so bloody precious in a few years if she shows backpacking and stays in dorms

It is for a 15 yr old. Sharing a room with your parents is no holiday.

AgnesMcDoo · 23/07/2026 21:12

Aluna · 23/07/2026 20:54

Or they don’t bother. That would have been my choice at 17.

Yes that too. DS17 chose to come

It's a bad state where a 15yo gets to rule the roost about a family holiday.

If she's not happy then either she part funds an extra room or doesn't come.

At 15 she's a child.

Parents should always get the final say over children.

Expressing a preference is not ruling the roost.

She can choose not to go. But I bet you the parents will start whining that it’s not a family holiday if she’s not there.

We don’t know if they can afford it or not. There’s always camping or glamping or a cheaper location.

At that age, I think her view on not sharing with someone of the opposite sex should be respected.

me too

she doesn't rule the roost but is entitled to her privacy.

There’s nothing “too precious” about privacy.

Quite.

Ok so the teenager doesn't get a holiday at all if parents can't afford to pay for a second room. It's not automatically being tight

Or maybe leaver her at home with grandparents staying then she hmcan happily have her own room by herself

We don’t know if they can afford it or not. There’s always camping or glamping or a cheaper location.

localnotail · 23/07/2026 20:55

Let me guess.... you are THAT 15 year old? Stay at home with garnny, dear, while your family goes on holiday.

You are suggesting basically paying for two rooms instead of one because a teenager is too precious about her dad seeing her in her underwear. Terrible, I know.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 23/07/2026 21:04

Well she can stay at home then, can’t she? Honestly…. bathrooms are for changing so there is no privacy issue. The rest of us grew up like this otherwise there would have been no holidays!

thatgreenjuniper · 23/07/2026 21:04

I don't know many families where a 15 yo is expected to go to bed at the same time as a 2yo

More details would help!

TheChosenTwo · 23/07/2026 21:03

We always did villa style holidays so that everyone could have their own rooms, the same as they did at home. I’m not paying to go somewhere with less privacy or comfort than we have at home and expecting everyone to have a wonderful jolly old time. Our dc need some time to themselves sometimes.
Hotel holidays just don’t suit our family, when it’s just dh and I it’s fine but travelling with a family to squeeze into hotel rooms is not for me and wouldn’t have made for a very enjoyable holiday, I’m not making sacrifices on precious holidays!
Despite how that may read, we have a lot of fun away, games, laughter, late nights etc but everyone has their own space to retreat to as and when they want.
