To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

NotTonightDeidre · 23/07/2026 19:07

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

I think more information is needed as to why she doesn't want to share.

As some have suggested is she worried about her dad seeing her? (Is he her actual dad or is it stepdad and is there something creepy going on?)

Though those saying she doesn't want him to see her maybe be ignoring the fact if it's a beach holiday she is potentially going to be parading around the poolside in a tiny bikini based on some girls I have seen, in which case dad plus everyone else will see her in a state of undress then, so what's different to sharing a room and getting ready in the bathroom?

The what if she is on her period is just ridiculous. Should girls avoid their dads when they are due on? How does this then work for girls that live with their dads full time? Utter nonsense and shows the stupidity that still exists around a normal body function.

It’s extraordinary how little awareness some women have of other women’s period issues.

And can’t figure out the difference between sharing a bathroom with their dad (which actually many girls don’t) and sharing a bathroom and a bedroom.

ThatRubyPeer · 24/07/2026 09:57

If her dad isn't going to respect her request for privacy then it's going to condition her to think her own needs (in this repsect) aren't as important. I would seriously think about that... 15 year old me would have never have shared a room with my Dad on holiday, nor would he have expected me to, that is seriously weird, sorry.

But surely taking time in the bathroom is no different to at home? Not everyone has two toilets.

Being in a bathroom knowing that the rest of your family are literally sat just outside is a bit different (if you are self conscious like many teens are) to using the bathroom at home where people would be in different rooms in different parts of the house and not sat outside the door.

Homes may not have multiple toilets but they do have a kitchen sink which can be used as a source of water to reduce pressure on the bathroom for basic washing/toothbrushing etc activities.

Routines on holiday are also usually different to home.

of course you didn't 😉

Nice story tho

I stayed in a studio apartment belonging to some friends of my parents.

I haven’t voted because the poll doesn’t align with your OP.

If she feels uncomfortable then she feels uncomfortable. Find accommodation that gives her some privacy.

How old is Dd2?

We had tents with separate "rooms" for sleeping.

Camping trips by definition also mean you can go outdoors just by opening the flap, so you have the whole space of the campsite available to you.

The bathroom is also away from the tent, so you don't have to worry about the rest of the family being hyper aware of how long you are spending in there and what you are doing (whether it's because you are dealing with menstrual blood, or just want to spend ages having a long shower and putting on your makeup). I'm not saying that families do care about how long a teen spends in the bathroom and what they are doing to be clear - just that it's something a teen could easily worry about.

But surely taking time in the bathroom is no different to at home? Not everyone has two toilets.

SingleSexMattersInCharity · 24/07/2026 09:36

This year is the first we’ve had to get 2 x premier inn rooms. DS is 19 and DD is 16. Rules about number of people of certain ages in a room partly. Partly due to size of DS. We chose to have a girls room and a boys room. DDs preference.

On holiday we managed to have a single room self catering deal. The living/dining/kitchen area had beds. So again we had a boys room and a girls room.

I think it depends on the whole set up of the options you are looking at and if you can manage privacy in other ways, by eg having a girls space and a boys space.

We couldn’t afford to have a holiday if we had to get 2 rooms.

I don't care enough to try to turn the thread towards that particular poster just because they made a laughable comment😂it's completely irrelevant to the OP anyway

I don't actually see what is laughable about it. Travelling at 17 was perfectly normal for me y people before everyone started infantilism of the teens

How would you know where that poster stayed?? Most young travels stated in youth hostels anyway.

She’s 15. Do you think they’re going be happy to leave her at home by herself for a week if she doesn’t fancy the trip?

I don’t think ‘we’re paying so you have to have put up with it’ should really apply to teenage girls’ privacy boundaries, really.

Whyever not Send her to stay with friend or relative or have one stay with her.

MyDarlingRose · 24/07/2026 09:17

If as a PP says he snores then she’s absolutely valid to want her own room 😂

MyDarlingRose · 24/07/2026 09:16

caringcarer · 23/07/2026 20:08

No it's not maybe DD has her period and doesn't want to be in a room with male.

What would having your period change? Nobody changes their pad etc in their bedroom they do it in the loo. You’re not waltzing around free bleeding so why would it make a difference?

This is an effing summer holiday, where you probably pay about 1k for a room for a week. And where you only going to use the said room to sleep at night. We are not talking about actual everyday living conditions here, you are aware of that?

If it was my teen they would be either sharing or staying at home. Its not about the money - its about spending it stupidly on something that's unnecessary.

You don’t know OP’s budget , they might easily afford it. It could be an aparthotel or a suite , not necessarily two room.
You don’t know their routine and whether they use the room “just to sleep”.
You don’t know whether the dad is considerate of privacy and acting in a suitable way around a 15 yo.
You don’t know whether he snores like a freight train.
You don’t know what issues this girl has around privacy and why.
Her objections could be very valid.

I think he's being unreasonable. She's 15, not 5. She has hit puberty, feels self-conscious and needs some privacy.

What do 15 year old girls do on camping trips with the family?

openended · 24/07/2026 07:43

Does it really matter if other peoples kids would be fine with it? She isn't. I'd talk to her and find out why. If its something as simple as where she gets changed then you can suggest everyone uses the bathroom. If its something like you and her dad sleep in the buff then you can compromise and wear pyjamas. As she is getting older I would just factor in rhe cost of 2 separate rooms.

We are a family of 5 and some hotels do accommodate that many people to a room. I wouldn't mind it for a weekend but for a weeks long holiday I like more room so we go for adjoining hotel rooms or villas.

JuliettaCaeser · 24/07/2026 07:11

As others have said the privacy issue is only a part of it. I would hate not to have a space to myself for a whole week. How on earth is that a holiday? Supposed to be fun.

Cramming a whole family with teens into one room is not fun in any way. Room sharing is for very small children not teens.

Moonnstarz · 24/07/2026 06:58

BauhausOfEliott · 24/07/2026 06:51

Timeforachange26 · 23/07/2026 23:52

That's fair enough. In which case they don't have to go on the holiday. Never heard the saying " He who pays the piper calls the tune"

When she's paying then she gets to choose

She’s 15. Do you think they’re going be happy to leave her at home by herself for a week if she doesn’t fancy the trip?

I don’t think ‘we’re paying so you have to have put up with it’ should really apply to teenage girls’ privacy boundaries, really.

Worthwords · 24/07/2026 06:16

Has no one on this thread encountered the modern phenomenon of hotels with glass-doored bathrooms? It's absolutely horrific even as a couple (who wants to be visible on the toilet?) but in full nightmare territory if sharing as a family.

Holidays are supposed to be enjoyable so I can't understand all the 'she should suck it up responses'. If she's uncomfortable, it's not much of a holiday.

JuliettaCaeser · 24/07/2026 06:07

Urgh hate the attitude of “we’re paying so tough luck”. Same vibe as “my house my rules”. Very unfair as they are young so are stick with you but are old enough to have their own views that should be respected or at least acknowledged. Sounds like some of these posters actually detest their own teens. Don’t know anyone like this in real life.

It is grim sharing a room in this situation. You need to accept she’s not 5 anymore and adjust your holiday plans. A night or two is ok but a whole week of your holiday crammed into one room sounds bloody awful.

alpenguin · 24/07/2026 02:23

Unless there’s some sordid reason for not wanting to share with her father or he snores like a train, then she is the one being unreasonable. If it’s the only way you all as a family can afford to go away she should just suck it up (with earplugs if nec) We all share a room when we go away or else we can’t afford to go away I’m sure my daughter would prefer not to but she also would prefer to go on holiday rather than not.

I had to share a room with my mum and brother into my 20s and when my brother got married we had to share a room the night before his wedding. We were in our thirties and it was weirdly nostalgic but it was the only way we could afford it.
