To expect 15 year old DD to share a room with the family on holiday?

It's actually is DH being unreasonable. He thinks DD (15) should be happy to share a room with us all (me, him, DD2).

She doesn't want to share a room with us (she will share with me & sister, not her dad).

I can see where she's coming from but DH doesn't see her p.o.v.

You should see a professional if this truly worries you.

If your family dynamic is such that siblings can't be in the same room, it's not me who needs a professional.

BlondeFool · 23/07/2026 20:14

Sounds totally shit

No it's not maybe DD has her period and doesn't want to be in a room with male.

are you quite well?

What do you think happens if a teen has a period near A MALE? Which happens to be her dad, the guy who will buy her tampons and periods pads .

Some posters sound deranged.

Fluffyscrubber · 23/07/2026 20:13

Two adults a teenager and a toddler all sleeping in the same room is just too much. Everyone will get shit sleep, why do it?

I'd be more worried than kids that age couldn't share a room!

Huge jump.

completely normal for families to share a room, particularly at that age.

what next, mum cannot take sons on holiday?

single dad leaves children in room alone?

bathrooms are for privacy at those ages.

Unfortunately as she is under age, most hotels won’t allow her to have a room on her own anyway, so it’s all a bit academic. Normally one of the adults has to share - ie you with her and DH with the other child. Sometimes you can get a room that you can get adjoining rooms but we’ve always had to blag it and say one parent is staying in each room.

Edited

They allow it when it’s adjoining suites or rooms.

For financial reasons many families have to share if there’s going to be a trip away from home.
Girls in one bed, boys in another.
Privacy is easy enough to sort with bathrooms and balconies.

We don’t leave home if we can’t afford our own bedrooms/hotel rooms.

We regularly go away and all 5 of us share a room. Seperate beds for kids or sleeping bags on the beds if needed

pinkdyno · 23/07/2026 20:02

Why? 7 and 10 is perfectly normal.

No it's not maybe DD has her period and doesn't want to be in a room with male.

DS and DD share a room on holiday if they come with us, and they are in their 20s now. we def shared family rooms back in the day although it’s easier to get an Airbnb type place.

We are the same! Think unless you are super rich and can afford separate hotel rooms for each of your children. We thought we were doing well booking two room! The teens had a great routine to ensure privacy when getting ready for two weeks.

ChalkOutlines · 23/07/2026 20:07

What are her actual objections about DH? Is it him seeing her (chilling, various states of undress etc) or is it her seeing him (walking round in his pants , scratching bits etc.?

Would a suite rather than two separate rooms work? That’s what we normally book and while it does add to the cost, it’s not as expensive as two rooms. Basically one big room, with a partition wall in the middle ; one double bed and two singles.

People saying it’s normal to share, of course it’s normal and fine… as long as everyone is happy and comfortable with it.

It sounds like your DH doesn't want sex on holiday.

what a stupid comment

My daughter is 10
my sons are 7 and 14
I wouldn’t expect her to share with the boys or her dad

Pallisers · 23/07/2026 20:05

For a night I'd expect her to be ok with it. For a week's holiday - I'd have hated that at 15. I'd hate it now.

FookFookFook · 23/07/2026 20:01

It is totally normal for families to share a room on holiday.

It’s also totally normal for families not to share rooms on holiday,

We never shared rooms with the kids, even when they were young.

What kind of holiday is that? I’d rather stay at home.

thatgreenjuniper · 23/07/2026 20:05

What's the actual set-up?

It's normal to share with family, and there's no difference being with your dad in a hotel room or in your house let's be honest.

If it's for a one-night stay, she needs to suck it up.

If it's the entire holiday? Bit grim for a teen to have to be with the rest of the family, it's not really a holiday if everyone must be on the same schedule.

caringcarer · 23/07/2026 20:05

NotDarkGothicMama · 23/07/2026 19:08

I think he's being unreasonable. She's 15, not 5. She has hit puberty, feels self-conscious and needs some privacy.

This. Your DH is being very unreasonable, overrule him on this.

ReadySaltedSquares · 23/07/2026 20:02

What are her reasons?

I don’t want to share with anyone other than DH (and that is why we have always got apartments until the kids were old enough to have their own hotel room) because FML I need some space. But I appreciate that is a privilege, and I’m paying and the Kids are not 😅

Thenightwemet13101 · 23/07/2026 20:02

When you say share a room do you mean an apartment or an actual hotel
room?

So for example we’ve been on holidays where there is a main bedroom, a living room with sofa beds (where the children sleep), then a bathroom.

I personally think that set up is fine, but I wouldn’t want to share just one bedroom with a teen and other dc as well. It’s just too cramped, no privacy.

I think it’s fine for a young child but not for a teen.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 23/07/2026 20:02

Assuming all else is equal....

It's fine....
