Because the general public expect to have everything they want without paying anything extra for it and will be in uproar if they're told they have to pay for something themselves that they think should be paid for by their taxes. Vast numbers of people don't seem to understand that there is a direct correlation between the amount of tax we pay and the funding available for hospitals, schools, roads etc...

They are not doing it, we’d know. And they all likely use accountants to keep their taxes down, or in Lineker’s case argue it in court.

On the actual tax look at outcomes for countries that have tried it. Lineker is a social media personality.

Lead by example, nothing’s stopping him and others. Why wait for policy?

This twit took HMRC to court to challenge whether he was self employed or a employee. He wants to pay more tax and then wait..when he is asked to he challenges it!

I believe he did win but it was a grey area with regard to tax.

Winning his tax appeal proves nothing beyond the fact that he has accountants and lawyers and he pays them to efficiently and aggressively organise his finances to ensure he pays as little tax as possible.

I have no interest in his opinions and I see Burnham choosing to do his first interview with Lineker as a very bad sign.

He wants the burden of taxation to be redistributed, that doesn’t happen simply by some people making voluntary payments.

It’s really strange how people are obsessed with twisting the aim of this.

He just does not understand that if he volunteers to pay more tax, which is great and wonderful, in reality he is still exempt from the pressures we have - people like him have private schools for their children, private healthcare for their families, gated houses away from the crowds. He still does not get it.

All very nice. Lineker, Curtis and their equivalent in the US, Mark Ruffalo or whoever could lead by example and rather than admonish people at the tv and film awards use the platform to say I’m voluntarily paying more tax. I invite you to do the same, there’s a blank cheque on your seat for HMRC / tax.

I've met Gary Lineaker. He's no saint.

The hate for Gary Linekar is bizarre, he does not have malevolent intentions, he along with others - Patriotic Millionaires, Richard Curtis being one of them, are stating that they should pay their fair share. Linekar said;

"Paying your fair share is a basic British value, but so many ordinary people are already paying more than they can afford. Our richest people can do more and most want to. To live up to our national values our new government must raise taxes on extreme levels of wealth for a fairer, better, more hopeful Britain.”

He is right, what exactly is evil about that, equally these are British values and we should be wanting to Conserve them!

Across the pond, there is a similar movement in the U.S.

In both cases you do have to wonder whose interests it serves for Britain not to succeed- not exactly very British of you to not want to exercise some of the only decent values we have!

When it comes to Gary and this fixation on him, people are just jealous. A British trait that we shouldn't be celebrating. Equally, our lack of constructive journalism, always going for the sensationalist, adversarial reporting, the British journalist culture of aggressive personal attacks and readers gullibility, is, let's face it why many have forgotten how to think which would help people sort their own lives out a lot more and stop focusing their hate on the likes of GL.

Last month ( March 23) Mr Lineker's lawyer James Rivett KC told a preliminary hearing in London that the star had been "dragged through the papers accused of not paying income tax which has been paid", and claimed there was a political element to the investigations.

He hasn't even paid what he should have paid, hence the ongoing court case with HMRC.

You can't leave it up to individuals to volunteer. Most won't.

The point this group are making is that the super rich have assets that grow, they are not income in the traditional sense so it’s not taxed unless it’s sold. Taxing this unearned asset growth at 2% over £10m will barely be noticed by them. Setting it at £10m should mean nobody gets scooped into the category through asset rich cash poor too

Surely just a few donating is not the point? I think what he says is fair. I remember seeing Deb Meaden on twitter saying that the last tory shuffle in taxes made her better off, she thought was madness, and that she'd more than happy to pay more towards the UK.
