I’m in a women’s knitting group. It started as just a group of friends and extended from there. We meet twice weekly in an hall that has to be booked and paid for and go on trips etc so it has become more formal over time and has a treasurer, secretary, social secretary etc. I and two other friends were founder members but we take a back seat in the organisation now. We attract lots of younger members (30-somethings!) which is great. I (early 60s) love socialising with people, hearing their views etc.

The new chairman (woman) has recently decided that we should announce that we are ‘trans friendly’ and try to attract trans women and non-binary people. Apart from the fact that I don’t know what non-binary people are other than people who don’t sign up to gender stereotypes (most of the women currently in the group don’t go in for nails / make up / fake tan etc anyway so what’s the difference?) I don’t want men in the group, trans identifying or otherwise. I’ve been sexually assaulted a few times in my lifetime, as has another of the founder members. We’ve also always appreciated having a space away from the male gaze and voice, where women can have their voice centre stage for once. I know a number of the current members are also extremely concerned about this new push and would feel pushed out too if any men join.

I have no desire to ‘out’ myself as a ‘TERF’ by complaining or pushing back as it would in their eyes make me a ‘bad’ person and I always try to do good by everyone. I just disagree wholeheartedly with the idea that men should be treated as women because they say so. It seems so seething misogynistic. I’m deeply sad about the whole situation and think I’m going to have to leave the club, because the current chairman seems to stand for things that I don’t. I appreciate women’s rights and they don’t seem to give a fig. What do politics have to do with knitting? Do I just leave? Do I wait and see whether any men try to join before leaving? I can’t be arsed to fight back even though I would have a LOT of (currently silent) supporters.

OP is being completely reasonable. You are gaslighting and I am sick of hearing that what women feel is not important and irrelevant.

Please speak up and take it to a vote. You ,ay be more supported than you think

It’s just that trans women are men, and men in the whole love a bit of mansplaining.

Men who self id as the opposite sex are still male, but come with extra paraphilias and fetishes, best avoided at all costs imo. We have had to deal with this weird transmania stuff for a decade or more and I had hoped it was on the wane to be honest. OP, best thing is to have a vote (secret ballot so members can vote honestly without censure for wrongthink) and, if the result is in favour of admitting men in womanface, leave and start a new informal group with like-minded woman, just like the old days. Also, don't go in for formalising your new group. Best of luck!

Ineedtoseetobelieve32 · 23/07/2026 08:27

You are definitely not being unreasonable - but I would have to try to explain in as non-inflammatory way as possible why I didn’t agree before starting my own group if necessary. Everyone being afraid to say what they think (when it may be the majority) is not okay.

You seem to have missed the key point that transwomen are men.

The op likes it as a women only group. She thinks changing that to mixed sex, whether by advertising to invite transwomen, or other means, would not suit her.

She's allowed to feel that. She's allowed to leave.

Contrary to some on this thread, she is also allowed to set up a new women only group if she wants to.

And you've missed the point that she'd be open to cis men joining. Just not trans people.

Men’s Shed isn’t a hobby group, it’s a medical charity specifically for mental health to counter isolation and loneliness because men are at higher risk of suicide. The correct comparison to men’s shed is a rape center for women or a breastfeeeding support group for women,

The Mens Shed concept was founded in Australia and then has been adopted by other countries. I know of some Men's Sheds in Australia that do allow women. Just because I know people who go, not because I am involved with them personally.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 23/07/2026 08:20

I personally wouldn't have an issue with this. However @Solentseeker does, so...

You know the chairperson has a habit of spouting off about her extreme political beliefs. This is just another one. The likelihood of a transperson wanting to join a sedate knitting group in the village hall (not even in the pub or a cafe) is probably vanishingly unlikely. Is a trans person likely to want to sit and knit and discuss the bypass or the primary school headteacher?

This is a theoretical. It's part of the chairperson's character to be extreme. Why not try ignoring it and just waiting for her to climb onto her next bandwagon? It'll still just be all the usual members, sitting, chatting and her ranting on.

Insist on it being put to the vote.

it’s very likely than many others quietly agree with you.

that will hopefully put an end to it.

ask how she’s going to get around EHRC guidance without opening it up to all men as well?

if that fails go back to inviting your friends to your house.

Edited

Make sure it’s not an open vote so no one is intimidated into pretending men are women .

OttersOnAPlane · 23/07/2026 08:17

@Marmaladelover has summed up the legal position perfectly, OP.

You currently have a women's group about knitting. If you wish to alter that to mixed sex, there should be a vote.

Everyone needs to be clear that it's illegal and discriminatory to welcome transwomen and not other men, so it's all or nothing.

It's also perfectly legal, reasonable and socially acceptable to have women only clubs on any topic. Many women prefer to socialise away from the male gaze and male socialisation. Don't let bullies tell you otherwise.

GCAcademic · 23/07/2026 08:06

Marmaladelover · 23/07/2026 01:27

OP you are getting a hard time here from people who woefully do not understand the law . Come over to the feminism forum and ask there if you like .

But for the benefit of those giving opinions which don’t reflect the law.

An association with rules eg a subscription of more than 25 members has to follow the Equality Act.

If you are currently a single sex association you take advantage of the single sex exemption. Transwomen are men and can’t join a single sex association for women . They can join a mixed association open to all men and women .

Your new Chair would not be complying with the law wanting an association of more than 25 people for women and transwomen and not others .

The committee could be sued for unlawful discrimination by any man who wanted to join what would now be a mixed group. Any woman suffering a detriment, perhaps someone who has suffered SA or DV could also sue for indirect discrimination. Other women could too, but given it’s knitting and not somewhere where you might undress or be in a vulnerable position or state this might be harder to show though I take your point about men affecting the dynamics.

Tell the Chair and committee they would be putting themselves at great risk for being sued . That should quash any notion.

This is all you need to know, OP. Loads of misinformation from loud vessels on this thread, but this is the actual law.

Stifledlife · 23/07/2026 08:05

I get you.
There is an ease of conversation among women only. When a man is there it changes the dynamic substantially. Men cannot relate to many of the events and perspectives in a female's life, purely because they haven't experienced them.

..and mansplaining is real.

I don’t blame you - to be honest I don’t want men in my sewing group trans or otherwise! They can go off and do their own stuff !

Lovely bit of segregation. Bring it on!

InfoSecInTheCity · 22/07/2026 23:11

Why is this the same thing? White people are white people, black people are black people these are objective facts. TW are not women so your argument is a false equivalency isn’t it? Unless you think it would be ok for a white person to identify as a black person and make changes to their appearance that they feel would allow them to ‘pass’ as black? And then to self identify into groups/award/opportunities that had been created specifically to meet the needs of black people.

This is an excellent comparaison! People would protest screaming "cultural approbation!". What about gender approbation? I, as a middle aged woman, will now identify as a young black man. The woke mafia will tell me I can not choose to be neither black nor young- but I can pretend to be a man. It's crazy.

BeNewTaupeBiscuit · 23/07/2026 07:46

Just wondering, would you be happy with trans men joining your group? Given that you’re placing a lot of importance on other people’s biological sex

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/07/2026 07:43

OtterlyAstounding · 23/07/2026 07:40

I'm not talking legality. I'm saying: why would you bother opening it to only some men? You may as well let them all in. Either go unisex, or keep it to actual women only.

I think this would be the best idea. Open it up to all men. I doubt there would be many takers anyway.

OtterlyAstounding · 23/07/2026 07:40

HiZev · 23/07/2026 06:56

This isn't right I think. It's legal to open a group to two sets of protected characteristics (sex plus gender reassignment) otherwise LGBT groups wouldn't be allowed (sexuality plus gender reassignment).

I'm not talking legality. I'm saying: why would you bother opening it to only some men? You may as well let them all in. Either go unisex, or keep it to actual women only.

Is there likely to be a population of trans knitters where you live? It's quite a niche. If transpeople account for 0.55% of the population and some of those will be transmen then the likelyhood of a transwoman knitter signing up to your group doesn't sound very high.

It doesn't matter if no trans women turn up, the group will have ceased to be a women's group and become mixed sex. And this is a can of worms btw, because the SC judgement does not allow a single sex group to be single sex for women and trans women, so any man would have the right to join (and there are male knitters). Phillipson seems to have tried to get round this problem by getting the guidance to say that you can have a trans + group - but the law says you cannot unless the group is mixed sex (so men and women can join) and the law trumps guidance i.e. if the OP's group admits transwomen then it must also admit non-trans men (it can admit trans men i.e. women anyway).

Wadsworthy · 23/07/2026 07:28

YANBU. The new Chair is virtue signalling without thinking through the social and legal implications.

As I understand current equalities legislation pertaining to sex, sex means biological sex, not acquired gender. And if it's a group of 25 or more, that advertises itself as a women's group ie single sex, then it is legally permitted to exclude trans-identifed men.

The enbys can sort themselves out according to sex: they're usually women who consider themselves speshul, and superior to your common-or-garden woman, like their mum.

Set up a new group where this policy won’t exist. Tell the other members they’re welcome to join your new group instead. Oh, and undercut the membership fees of the existing group to attract even more memberd

CorvusPurpureus · 23/07/2026 07:23

I think I’d just say:

’well of course we can encourage transmen & female NB people to join, they’d be very welcome. Not male people though unless you mean ANY male people, not just trans ones; the law is clear as the WI & GG have recently found out.

’So either we stay all female or we agree that everyone is welcome.

’FWIW when X, Y & I set up this group z many years ago, we always intended it to be for women. My personal preference would be to keep it that way.

’But obviously things evolve. If the majority of us would now prefer a mixed sex group than that’s fair enough!

’So what we should do is put it to the vote - anonymously so no one feels pressured one way or the other - & we agree to abide by the majority decision.

’Whoever disagrees with the result - whichever way it goes - is free to set up their own group, no hard feelings, or stay & see how things pan out.

‘That sounds fairest to me, what does everyone else think? Shall we vote on it?’

That way you’re not getting drawn in to a slanging match, just setting out the options & a potential solution. The Chair will doubtless think you’re a big terf meanie, but tough shit - your opinion is WORIADS & you’re correct on the legal position.

anyolddinosaur · 23/07/2026 07:16

OP you will find there are men pretending to be women here and also students who think it's funny to make stuff up. Then we have the dick panderers who think any man should always get exactly what they want and women should always be ignored. You could, of course, be one of the students.

You have a chair and a constitution. If the chair wants change it needs to go to a whole group vote and it should be a secret ballot as it's a contentious issue. Just tell her that. If the ballot is secret then you'll probably find the men stay out. Dick panderers are a very noisy and violent minority, you need to use the rules of the club.
