Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

Wait, if you've both been out all day (hot country? beach?) then surely you'll both have a shower and freshen up for donner anyway.

Otherwise.....gross.

@AnonymityAnonymity

or maybe she just likes to look good, and is happy to spend a few minutes here and there topping up?

Feeling you only look good wearing make is surely a lack of self esteem?
Not being able to enjoy yourself on holiday unless your make up mask is in place doesn't sound very healthy to me.

Obviously you and OP think differently.

My only point that if this is how OP feels about herself then fair enough but perhaps she would be better off in a relationship with someone who is capable of accepting her for who she is rather than this guy who obviously isn't

No it doesn't necessarily mean that.
But if you are on holiday and you are continually needing to touch up your lip liner or reapply mascara or whatever it smacks of unhealthy obsession and a lack of self esteem.
I'm not excusing her H's behaviour btw

wearing make up doesn’t make one obsessed with their appearance. Hth.

You sound incompatible actually.
How on earth has your relationship lasted this long when you are obsessed with your makeup and appearance and it obviously irritates him to the extent he is an unpleasant and controlling grump?

He’d hate me then. I need at least an hour and if I need to wash my hair then usually 1.5 hours.

I'd hate you, too. I'm so glad I'm not a bloke, and married to someone who takes that long to get ready every morning. And on holiday, too! I want to be up and doing something, not waiting for a 1.5 morning toilette to be finished.

@saraclara

so you want to be up and off?

you don’t shower? Wash hair? Clean teeth? Brush hair? Apply hair?

be for real, no one can just roll out of bed and be up and off (and if they do they shouldn’t as they’ll stink and look shit)

Iocanepowder · 23/07/2026 06:45

The way you’ve written your op makes it sound to me like you’re going back to the room multiple times a day to all this, in which case that would sound a bit excessive to me? In any case, he doesn’t need to come with you.

I don’t get how more women don’t sweat off their make up on holiday like I would🤣

Nah, nah, nah …. I would be telling him to “shut the f*ck up” if I was with him! It is your holiday to do what you want to.

And opening the curtains when I needed light or turning the light on.

Who does he think he is!!

Such a weird way to behave with each other.

I would be mighty pissed off if my husband woke up early and turned all the lights on and opened the curtains while I was sleeping because of his routine. He is the early riser in our relationship.

It’s not about one person controlling another or
the other thinking they are the centre of the universe and can do what they like when they like and anyone who tells them otherwise is abusive/controlling.

Just be normal and considerate of each other and you both get what you want.

EssexMum80 · 22/07/2026 20:05

He should be pleased you take pride in your appearance. I NEVER even do the school run without make up and if he isn't noticing the effort you make I'm sure others will

Lol

He shouldn't be telling you what to do but to be honest my husband drives me mad faffing about in the room on holiday and it does feel like we are wasting our holiday time.

Wasting holiday time? Why are your holidays so regimented? I can understand it if you’ve planned an excursion that has a specific start time but otherwise why? It sounds like “Come on DH, if we don’t leave sharpish we won’t be in the pool by 7:30, meaning we only have an hour before we start reading. At this rate I won’t get through my 50 page target by my 10:00 coffee”. Sounds exhausting!

AquaWhichIsFrenchForWater · 23/07/2026 06:19

In the mornings, we do try our best not to not disturb each other, but in terms of freshening up for the evening; your husband is just winding himself up! He doesn’t have to hang around for you, why can’t he go downstairs and get the drinks in? Or go for a walk?
If you only take 10 minutes, he doesn’t know how lucky he is 😂

Fairy40 · 23/07/2026 01:34

What on earth has that got to do with anything? ...erm absolutely nothing ...

Agree with the others. Anyone who forbids me from doing anything is not who I want in my life

DressOrSkirt · 23/07/2026 00:41

Why does he need to go to the room with you?
I think getting ready in the bathroom in the morning is fair. Whichever one of us it up first we make sure not to disturb the other.

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 23/07/2026 00:15

If you’ve told him that you need ten minutes to freshen up and he’s not giving you that, even when he’s said he’ll give you the time you want (how very magnanimous of him, btw) then you need to show him that you work on a stopwatch basis. Set ten minutes on your phone. Then every time he says cmon, hurry up, how much longer? You stop the clock and count to twenty before starting it again. Every single time. And if he protests, tell him the more he complains, the longer it takes. So he can either whine and have it take half an hour, or he can quietly sit down for ten minutes and you’ll be ready to go when you said you would be.

saraclara · 22/07/2026 23:48

Another day on Mumsnet, another Dickhead husband. Switch the light on, and tell him to get up and shut the fuck up.

If my partner/travel buddy got up to do their hair and make up while I was asleep (an hour before I needed to get up) I'd be telling them not to turn the hotel room light on, too. It's hugely inconsiderate to do that, when hair and make up can be done in the bathroom.

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 22/07/2026 23:40

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:41

Forbid maybe be overstating but I don’t use the light in the main room until he is up. Which is only ever 10 mins before we agree to leave. He only needs to shower and dress in the morning. Whereas I do tend to do make up and hair.

I get not putting the light on too early but 30 mins before you leave is fine!! I’d be pushing back on that.

socks1107 · 22/07/2026 23:33

No he enjoys the lie on the bed while I do it and then we head back out! Takes me @30minutes. He would never moan at this

Cherrytree86 · 22/07/2026 23:30

He’s a knobhead.

he should be freshening up too… cleaning teeth, replying deodorant, etc.

Imseriouslyyouguys · 22/07/2026 23:29

“forbids putting on the light in the room”

FORBIDS?! Since when was he in charge?

PurpleAxe · 22/07/2026 23:26

I do want I want to look after myself.

My husband does the same.

I would tell him to fuck off with his attitude.

jellyfish798 · 22/07/2026 23:24

Ten mins is nothing! I have half my wardrobe out, spending ages mixing and matching with handbags, jewellery, shoes. Always like a cup of tea and some music on while I get ready too. He is lucky, you're v quick!

palorina · 22/07/2026 17:43

I thought DH was having a go at putting on make up there.
