Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:35

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

I know right? the idea of using wet wipes when you have a paid hotel room to shower in is just ludicrous

Why bother paying for a hotel in the first place if you are going to act like you are camping?!

Edited

I have to say that it's very rare to find a campsite without a good shower these days!

MidnightMeltdown · 24/07/2026 12:49

He’s a twat. When we go on holiday, DP gets up and gets ready first, as he’s pretty quick, and then he gos out and gets a drink/reads a book somewhere and gives me space to get ready in my own time. Works for us.

Nothing worse than having a man hanging about while you’re trying to get ready!

No!! Some of that stuff would mean her self indulgently looking at herself in a mirror rather than gazing adoringly at her husband! She should just suck it up and go natural while on holiday - throw that silly face paint away, I’m sure her husband would be pleased

Quite right. The hotel should really remove all the mirrors from the rooms.

They're only encouraging women to indulge in dangerous levels of self-care instead of gazing adoringly at their husbands.

In fact, they should replace them with bold framed signs saying, "WOMEN: Have you considered hurrying up?"

I think the answer is to never actually use the hotel room to save maximum time!

Just do your makeup in the lift, brush your hair in reception, spray deodorant whilst jogging to the restaurant for dinner, and if you need a shower, I'm sure there's a conveniently located public fountain somewhere. Or, just use the hotel pool en route to breakfast (dont forget to take a travel sponge with you).

In fact, why sit down for dinner at all? You could easily save 2 hours of time every day by putting your dinner in a napkin and eating it while speed walking to whatever is next on your exhausting list of regimented activities.

Much more sensible than expecting a grown adult to wait the 10 minutes they'd already agreed to. Heaven forbid anyone should endure the unimaginable hardship of waiting 10 entire minutes.

🤣

Well apparently if your husband can’t be arsed waiting ten mins you’ve to take wet wipes and deodorant in your bag and get ready on the run so as not to inconvenience him in any way,

who knew so many submissive wives.

I don't think it is unreasonable to do the morning routine in the bathroom if others are sleeping- common courtesy not to have the main light on. It's easy to make sure necessary items are in the bathroom. If you need the blowdryer that is noisy- can you use something else to curl your hair e.g. heat tongs?

Re: touching up- as you describe it YANBU but is it really 10 min? How many times per day? Maybe there can be a compromise?

I also will quickly touch up make-up, hair on holiday when we happen to be in the room. This is literally 5 min. My partner is not bothered, and I don't think he would mind if it took longer, but everyone is different.

Dear me, some mumsnetters must really go out for dinner on holiday not looking or smelling at all great! 😷

The issue isn't her going back to the room, but that she's holding up everything else while she faffs around with curlers, make up etc..

The deodorant issue is purely OP's, in general people don't feel the need to reapply deodorant during day, presumably because they use effective deodorant. But if you really must, then it's easy enough to have a wipe under your arms first with wet wipes..

@Sereine

what exactly is she holding up?

I asked the Op to clarify if she’s going back to the room in the evening to freshen up which most agree is reasonable or going back much more frequently which some of us would find a bit annoying. Other posters have queried the same. A pp has clarified. Thank you

Good grief.

What on earth are you talking about, who said she returns to the room every two hours.Confused

Of course mine could sit for ten mins alone - and happily sits on the balcony with a beer while I get ready in the evening. But if I was wanting to go back to our hotel room for ten mins every time we’d had, breakfast, after lunch, before we went for a walk I can imagine he’d be like “come on love get out and enjoy the sun!” I’d be the same if he had to go back to the room every couple of hours because he wanted to do his hair.

That’s why I was asking if the OP is meaning he’s annoyed that she takes time getting ready in the morning / evening, or if he’s a bit fed up she’s constantly popping back to the room.

She literally says ‘ if we go back to the room to freshen up’. No suggestion she’s popping back multiple times.

It reads like he’s just not happy with how she’s spending that time.

Thanks for clarifying, as per other posters that wasn’t immediately clear to me when I read it. As I said, if she’s just wanting to freshen up after the day before heading out for the evening, or get changed between pool and heading out for an excursion, that’s completely reasonable and her husband is being a prat.

Thats not what is happening though is it?

They are BOTH going to the hotel room to freshen up apparently, he's just getting pissy about what she's doing in the room which is out of order, rude and horrible behaviour on holiday when you are meant to be relaxing and enjoying yourself

aberturret · 24/07/2026 09:45

user4635228 · 24/07/2026 09:40

If they are close enough for her to pop back to her room then presumably they must be in their hotel complex. In which case why is he huffing? if he is sitting by the pool or reading or at the bar or whatever, why on earth would it bother him if she takes 10 mins away from him?

If your husband literally cannot sit for 10 mins alone then that is really controlling and quite concerning.

If you are on holiday and your partner pops back to the room for 10 mins do you tell them they cant? do you tell them off for it? do you demand they cant leave your side?

Yes this is how I read it to and the OP hasn’t clarified - I can’t see anyone having an issue with OP getting ready in the morning or getting showered, changed and tooshed up in the evening, that’s completely reasonable. However if she is “popping back to the room,” a couple of times a day to reapply I can see husband huffing a bit - yes he can sit in the bar or whatever but he’s probably thinking ffs let’s just get on with our day you don’t need all that.

I'm not making anything up. Read the OP properly.

If that's what OP prefers, fine. But she's holding up other people with a lot of unnecessary faffing, and her husband is entitled to be unhappy about it.

I’ve read the Op. I’m not sure you have.
There is nothing there to state she’s going back multiple times.

Who made him the boss anyway? If she wants to spend 10 mins on touching up her make up that’s her prerogative.

aberturret · 24/07/2026 09:38

BasketCaseBug · 23/07/2026 13:45

It read to me more like regular popping back to the room throughout the day rather than a before dinner shower/getting ready which if a quick touch up takes ten minutes, the evening getting ready would be at least an hour.

Hes not entitled to bore on at her though as they "agree" she can have 10 mins.

Cant get over that, "agree" 😂 like fuck id be seeking agreement. Id never expect him to ask if he can freshen up either. Im not uptight on holiday though tbf.

Bloody wet wipes?! Not a chance I’d be using wet wipes to freshen up when I have a perfectly good hotel room I can use.

Why does his need to rush trump her need of spending 10 mins to feel fresher? There’s no evidence that she is ‘faffing’, that’s a narrative you (and others) are peddling to paint people who wear make up in a negative light.
The is nothing abnormal about wanting to pop back to
your room to freshen up before heading out for the evening.

Im currently on holiday. Every day the group has returned to the apartment to freshen up before we head out for the evening. Totally normal behaviour.
Because most of us are adults we just agree a time to go out. That way people can do what they need and want to before going out.
If someone is desperate to get out early then that’s on them. Their needs don’t dictate how the rest of the group spend their time.

Exactly. Good grief - when I am on holiday I like to be relaxed and feel fresh- maybe have a quick shower if I feel like it.

If someone was constantly rushing me to the point they couldn't even bear me to spend 10 minutes on this and couldn't bear to spend 10 mins alone at the bar without me whilst I got ready I'd think there was something seriously wrong with them!

I dont accompany my husband to the bloody toilet every time he needs to go so why cant her husband wait for her in the hotel bar or lounge and read the paper, get a drink, etc. They arent joined at the hip FFS

I dread to think what some people in this thread are like on holiday, it sounds like being in the flipping army where every minute is accounted for and you have regimented breaks of no more than X minutes 🤭

Agree I can’t get my head round some of these responses, she’s on holiday, not a 15 min break at work, she should be able to do as she pleases, not be banned from spending 10 mins in her room as he can’t be arsed waiting.
