AIBU All hell broke loose over UCAT

YourChirpyBee · 20/07/2026 23:16

DS is applying for Medicine and needs to book his UCAT. He wanted to book a particular date, but DH, who believes in astrology, was pressuring him to book the day before instead (he refused to pay for the selected date) because he thinks it's a better date.

I agree this shouldn't be forced on DS. However, DS completely lost his temper. He said astrology was "bullshit", that this was his future and none of DH's business, that we had nothing to do with his future, that everything he'd achieved was thanks to him and not us and that we havent helped DS17 at all.

AIBU to be really upset by how he spoke? I completely understand disagreeing with astrology but DS17 showed zero gratitude or respect for everything we've done to support him.

Who refused to pay for the selected date?

It clearly says in the opening paragraph. Quicker to read it properly than post.

heizfiftyseven · 21/07/2026 07:58

@NoMoreLifts Dad refusing to pay for test unless teen chooses certain date is very controlling.

Then he pays for it himself. Simple.

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · 21/07/2026 07:58

All hell didn’t break out over UCAT. It broke out over your husband’s stupid attempt to impose idiotic superstitions on your son.

If your son does well at school and gets into medicine, it’ll be because of his efforts, not because he did tests on particular days!

Good grief how angry it would have made me if my parents had tried to ascribe my achievements to the calendar!

diddl · 21/07/2026 07:57

I agree this shouldn't be forced on DS

So have you told him that it's ok to book the date he wants?

he refused to pay for the selected date)

So why don't you pay?

Sounds as if all of this could have been easily avoided.

And he is demonstrating a solid understanding of this right. Unfortunately his dad is not. He isn’t currently treating patients so nothing about this scenario shows his ability to understand patients right of self determination.

That is incorrect.
If he wants to be a Doctor he must understand that others have the right to a belief system of their choice eg Jehovah's Witnesses refusing blood transfusions.
His dad wants to use Astrology to obtain a more auspicious time, that's his belief.

CrazyMidget · 21/07/2026 03:18

🤣🤣🤣

What's being a Scorpio got to do with it?

ChalkOutlines · 21/07/2026 07:52

Booking doesn’t open until the 23rd of June so why are they arguing about it now , anyway?

heizfiftyseven · 21/07/2026 07:50

Frugalgal · 20/07/2026 23:55

Does it not give you the biggest ick possible that a man believes that shite?

As someone who has studied Astrology, I can assure you it is not "shite".

However, unless you have a very accurate birth time to work with it isn't much use. In any case a day either way isn't going to make much difference.

I am surprised this issue hasn't come up before now.

Shinyandnew1 · 21/07/2026 07:48

Who refused to pay for the selected date?

handsdownthebest · 21/07/2026 07:48

Is this for real? That poor boy.

Seeingadistance · 21/07/2026 07:43

InterestedDad37 · 20/07/2026 23:40

Well, astrology is bullshit. But I would say that, being a Scorpio 😃

😆

Dollymylove · 21/07/2026 07:43

I think your DS would be wise to get as far away from you both as possible

4t4 · 21/07/2026 07:42

Your poor DS. It’s your responsibility as parents to pay for the date he selected. I don’t know how your post can be real, it’s so ludicrous.

Comeinsideforacupoftea · 21/07/2026 07:40

No doubt you'll be on here in 10-15 years wondering why he doesn't want anything to do with you OP and complaining that some evil daughter in law is preventing you from seeing him and your grandkids...

Megifer · 21/07/2026 07:40

I like the sound of your DS 😊

Thankyounextnext · 21/07/2026 07:39

Not only is he pressuring him to conform to his astrology beliefs, he is actively forcing him to by refusing to pay for another date. Pathetic.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 21/07/2026 07:38

"All hell broke loose" - no, your son very reasonably lost his temper over your DH's incredibly unreasonable behaviour.

I really feel sorry for kids like this who have behaved and achieved all their childhood and when they finally reach the end of their tether over something ridiculous and angering it's them that's in the wrong, because their usual behaviour is so perfect.

Grow up and see who's really at fault here OP.

Thankyounextnext · 21/07/2026 07:37

ghostyslovesheets · 20/07/2026 23:26

Yes - apart from parenting- as we all do

This, 1 million per cent. My career is probably the proudest achievement of my parents' lives, I achieved it despite them (particularly my mum), not because of them, and I think she would not be able to grasp the idea that it wasn't because of her "support". Adult children should not have to thank their parents for bringing them up.

SatsumaDog · 21/07/2026 07:37

Don’t take it personally op. He’s massively stressed and just lost his temper with his father’s strange request. Just leave him be to get on with things, keep him fed and watered and support quietly from the sidelines. Good luck to your son, it’s a tough exam.

lizzielizard · 21/07/2026 07:35

InterestedDad37 · 20/07/2026 23:40

Well, astrology is bullshit. But I would say that, being a Scorpio 😃

That made me proper larf! Thanks

Velumental · 21/07/2026 07:35

Imagine working so hard at school you were looking at doing medicine, wanting to book a UCAT and instead of being proud of you, your controlling narcissist dad has to make it about him.
.because that's what this i, your husband had a choice, the choice to shush and let his child excel or the choice to impose his own nonsense to make himself part of it. So he can say 'ah he's a doctor because I told him to choose the Tuesday for the exam and paid for it's

Any wonder your child is angry.

Lavenderandbrown · 21/07/2026 07:33

Op I haven’t RTET but he’s stressed. My 25 y.o. Ds who has taken the ACT(USA) and DAT and is now sitting for his oral surgery fellowship despite scoring in the top 98% on the previous two texted his sister and I both… “no one is allowed to bring this up”. He doesn’t want asked how it went.

your DH is extremely silly to change the date based on his astrology read. You do as well as you can on standardized tests because you studied and are well prepared. There is an element to being good at standardized
tests but not lucky or astrological aligned.

He’s going to need alot of support
in the future so put this woo woo aside put this tension aside and support him in a
real way in the future.

Wherethedogsits · 21/07/2026 07:33

He needs to book it for a day that suits him. Not when the stars align.

ChalkOutlines · 21/07/2026 07:33

Seebiscuits · 21/07/2026 07:29

It would be interesting if the op had replaced astrology with any of the major religions and see if the replies disrespecting his dad's beliefs were the same,

To me, it's all woo-woo astrological nonsense ( two major religions revolve around the lunar calendar) and some quite tall tales of giants and flying horses, but it seems less popular to disrespect them on Mumsnet!

Mumsnet ,generally, is very anti religion.

Chickadee26 · 21/07/2026 07:32

Gateappreciation · 21/07/2026 07:27

You could counter that by saying why can’t dh indulge his son in booking the test one day later, even if he feels it’s not such a good day.

Also, dh tried to pressurise his son, and then refuse to pay for the test on the later day. No wonder ds blew up and reacted.

Thanks for your reply although I don't think my question was interpreted as I meant it. I am not saying he must blindly obey his dad, I just am wondering if the day makes a differance? As I said, unfamilar with it all. Are the exams only on certain days?
Doesn’t affect me, I just like to be in the loop!
