To expect Spain to be hot in August!?

Going to Tenerife next week… temperatures are showing in the high teens/early 20s…

kids are already moaning it’ll be too cold to use the pool, DH is comparing with the sunshine and home and bemoaning the cost and I’m trying to put a positive spin on it…!

Weather is weather. It is not a guarantee. Would you "expect" most of England to be 30 degrees plus in early July?

We used to live in SW France - holidaymakers would "expect" it to be scorching sunshine and yet sometimes it rained. Some days were very windy. We also had plenty of epic thunderstorms.

Last time I looked, the Canaries were in the Atlantic, not the Med.

Of course mainland Spain will be very hot, which is why I recently declined joining an extended family holiday in southern Spain - in August. 🥵

That was the temp when I went at Christmas so I would be fairly annoyed.

Have you looked at where Tenerife is on a map? It's not in Spain, or in the Mediterranean. It's in the Atlantic and can be windy. It's usually hot in the summer and pretty warm in winter too. I often go to the canaries in the late winter/early spring and it's more than warm enough to swim in a pool.

Canaries are usually in a range from low to high 20s all year round. So will not be as hot as say Madrid or other parts of Spain due to their geographical location. Frankly, living in the Mediterranean, I am paying lots of money to go to the mountains where it will be low 20s at most. Bliss!

Depends which side of the island you're on. One side is cooler and windier than the other.

I'm in Tenerife now. Trust me...it's early 30s. I assume you are going to the south. Make sure when you Google the weather you put the resort in or south Tenerife otherwise it can show the north.

It is 28 to 30 degrees in Los Cristianos just now, it will probably be hotter in August.

High teens to early twenties is the best temperature window for an active holiday in my opinion. Good for swimming, walking, cycling. Once it gets to thirties physical activity becomes uncomfortable.

I live in mainland Spain and it's just relentless heat at the moment.

I don't know if you've been to Tenerife before, but the north is beautiful. And a visit to Teide is a must. Take a boat trip to LA Gomera....you'll have a great time.

Yes, I think she probably doesn't realise. They're nearer to the Western Sahara and Morocco than Spain!

Tenerife has a nice steady warm, dry island climate most of the year round. People go to the Canaries for Christmas sunshine. I wouldn't set my heart on being able to swim in December but you'll be fine in August. It will be very nice.

I wouldn't actually go to the Med in August as it can be hotter than Satan's armpit.

Tenerife has a different climate depending on where you are on the island, one part is notorious for being more cloudy/rainy than the other, it’s nothing like mainland Spain like your title suggests.

How do people not know where Tenerife is? Bizarre!

The canaries have a completely different climate to the Mediterranean. They are much less sheltered and often windier and the temperature remains more stable year round, avoiding the summer heatwaves that the med has, but staying warm longer into the winter.

Just got back from Italy where it went up to 42 degrees on one of the days…

The low 20s sounds lovely to me right now, but appreciate that you do want it warmer when it’s a beach holiday.

Can't imagine it'd be too cold to use a pool? The outdoor pools in the UK are used at far lower temperatures than that.

I’ve been to Gran Canaria, lanzarote and Tenerife in September and October and all times it’s been hot and sunny and certainly not cold enough not to use the pool. So in August it should be fine. I’ve been to Kefalonia early September and yes it was a bit breezy but still fine to go into the sea and pool.

What forecast are you looking at? You might get late teens as a low overnight, but you'll be in bed by that time.

What temperature did your DH order?

take yourself on a lovely break next year. They can stay here and go to the local pool if all they want is a pool ?
What about sight seeing and different food etc
