You/he/she is a narcissist.

You don't sound very nice/pleasant.

I'm self diagnosed with ADHD/Autism.

She/he must have ADHD/Autism.

You need to make your partner do X. (Because that is how adult relationships work).

Op: I need a new dress.
Mn: here is a shapeless sack the colour of sludge that costs almost £200.

I hate Boden.

I fancy Greg Davies.

...

What have I missed?

Really? You know that word they use when basically they are accusing you of lying 😂

grumpygrape · 24/07/2026 14:28

Apologies if this is a repeat but I've just seen it and it hit the grumpy button.

'Just use earplugs.'

Despite the OP saying they have young children.

truebIood · 24/07/2026 14:01

I have a best friend, let’s call her Denise. I only see her once every 52 months because we’re both so busy. Denise has asked if I would like to attend a bottomless brunch for her birthday next month. This falls on a weekend, which is family time. AIBU not to go?
‘Eugh. Bottomless brunch, how tacky.’
‘How old is she? 8? She doesn’t need to celebrate her birthday as an adult.’
‘She’s a narcissist. Grey rock.’
‘No you’re NBU. Weekends are protected time for you and your little family.’

🤣

AND:

"Why can't Denise celebrate on a Tuesday evening? She sounds very demanding"

"Imagine looking back from your deathbed and wishing you'd gone to a bottomless brunch"

"I suspect there is a lot more to this than the OP is telling us"

"I'm clearly in the minority here..." (before expressing the most popular opinion on the thread)"

"Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm with Denise"

"You all sound exhausting"

‘I’m confused/I don’t understand……’
Usually used to make the poster feel stupid when actually, claiming that you’re extremely confused because OP mentioned that they had a boyfriend, then later referred to him as ‘they’, makes you look like the stupid one.
The faux-naivety grates on me. I’m sure I’ve read a comment that somebody was ‘confused’ about what an ice cream truck was… “OHHH. You mean an ice cream van?!”

DH has a hobby (think a mode of transport that’s like a tricycle but with only 2 wheels). He does this hobby once a month for about half an hour. We have 2 DC, aged 336 months and 225 months. He’s adamant that he’s doing his hobby tomorrow, but I have a cold and don’t think it’s fair that he gets to go out while I’m poorly and juggling 2 tall, willowy children.
‘Get a shit hot lawyer and divorce him. NOW.’
‘Next time he’s about to head out of the door all lycra’d up, tell him he needs to look after the children you’re going to a spa hotel for the night.’
‘How old are your DC?’
‘Why did you marry someone so thoughtless?! And then go on to have children with him?!’

@VividPinkTraybake yes when I posted that it hadnt occurred to me there were indeed various cases where gender doesn't matter and the gender of the doctor you see is a great example.

But when an entire thread revolves around a couple's relationship and you know the gender of the Op but ( usually she, as men don't post so often). Then starts using a them, that is really unhelpful in considering the likely dynamics..Sexist perhaps but I'm pretty sure genders of the characters have a massive bearing on the replies we give.

DontDareCallMeDarling · 24/07/2026 13:07

I didn't want to read and run.

truebIood · 24/07/2026 13:06

People who are obsessed with "logging" things with the police. Not actual crimes or potential crimes but ridiculous things like "my neighbour was playing Abba in the garden yesterday. I hate Abba" - "You should log this with the police, OP".

As if the police have this huge leather bound book of irritants we've all logged with them, with zero purpose at all and it's completely useless but at least it's been "logged". 🙄

DontDareCallMeDarling · 24/07/2026 13:06

I'm a high earner

So pleased to see you feel the same as me with the "them" and "they". I would love to go back to the days when it denoted more than one. I guess they call that progress.

You'd have to go back a long time...

VividPinkTraybake · 24/07/2026 13:02

grumpygrape · 23/07/2026 09:59

I often refer to posters as 'them' because I don't know their gender. Her/him is cumbersome.

As it has been been used since at least the 14th century, but people on here are...well we all know why people are so determined but wrong about acceptable language use

VividPinkTraybake · 24/07/2026 12:55

AliceNotInChains · 21/07/2026 09:52

“Is that you Nigel/Kier/Kemi?” (insert any politician name here because it’s un fathomable that someone might have a different political opinion to them)

Even worse is "is that you o.p's sister/mum/work colleague," firstly not as witty as they think and secondly jsut another way to try and shut down different opinions without answering them

VividPinkTraybake · 24/07/2026 12:51

PinkMagpie · 20/07/2026 18:02

This can’t be real/ that never happened/ can’t believe so many have fallen for it

That needs to be said more tbh, it's embarrassing sometimes

Triskellion75 · 24/07/2026 12:01

Anyone said 'get a grip' yet?

mommaham · 24/07/2026 11:04

Tinkly laugh.

RaraRachael · 24/07/2026 10:41

Not a phrase but I hate the guessing game threads where the OP asks people what ths outcome of a situation was, then finally comes back 3 days later to tell us it was basically a non event.

cafenoirbiscuit · 24/07/2026 09:20

Sit him/her/them down and tell them ……
why can’t we have a serious conversation standing up any more?

DontbesorrybeGiles · 24/07/2026 09:15

BarbarianBabs · 20/07/2026 08:37

“And what was his reply when you told him <<insert sentence that the poster fully knows OP didn’t tell her husband/partner>>”

That’s what I immediately thought of as well. It does my head in.

I also shudder when I see “handhold please”. It just sounds so pathetic, sorry.

I cringe when anyone refers to mumsnet as a “ nest of vipers”.

Finally, I’ve noticed over the last couple of years that rather than just asking “what do you think I should do about this?”, so many posters instead ask “has anyone been through something similar?”. It really irritates me for some reason.

EmailsaysOOO · 24/07/2026 09:05

@Bosee oh I see..Far too clever for me. If I don't know I guess . And in the end it generally becomes clear. Most of the time in Mumsnet threads it is actually a him or a her..

Bosee · 24/07/2026 00:11

EmailsaysOOO · 23/07/2026 17:01

Is this when responding on a thread? If I don't know and feel it's relevant then I make a clear guess. It seems it doesn't affect others so they go along with they. It's individual at the end of the day

It's a quote from Joe Lycett. The answer is in the question and shows that actually we all do it naturally. Sorry, the wink was supposed to be a clue.

grumpygrape · 24/07/2026 00:08

I use they in 'real life' though. If I invited a friend to lunch and she/he said 'Oh, I've got a friend staying then' I'd say 'Bring them along too'. I wouldn't feel the need to interrogate whether the friend is male of female, and I certainly wouldn't guess.

EmailsaysOOO · 23/07/2026 20:33

Bosee · 23/07/2026 16:39

If I don't know if they're her or him what am I supposed to call them? 😉

Toss a coin,.go by the rest of the context, go for what you think fits the question..I just guess and wait to be supplied with the answer, assuming the Op reads and wished to confirm or deny..But there's no law about this. You can continue with a vague them or they if you like to do that.

edit -
my apologies - think I already posted a comment to you..For some reason I've had the app and the browser version going today and it's messing with my little mind. Sorry to keep going on

Bosee · 23/07/2026 16:37

It's not difficult. Often about things OP acknowledges shouldn't be hard but she's struggling with. I wonder if posters realise what an arse it makes them sound.

ThatCyanCat · 23/07/2026 16:33

I can't stand it when OPs withhold the sexes of the people in their stories. If you don't trust our judgement when we have the full details, why are you asking our opinion at all? If you think we're so sexist that our responses are worthless, go ask someone else.
