AIBU to think Andy Burnham might call a general election soon?

To think Andy Burnham will call a general election before Christmas? Yes it would be a massive roll of the dice but,

Reform - don't have the numbers for a GE and there's all frog faces suspicious money bringing him a lot of heat.

Torys - kemi doesn't have a lot of depth, I feel and she hasn't changed much in the polls. She's good at the dispatch box but let's face it anyone could stand up and insult the other side.

By calling a GE Andy would have his own mandate and break the deadlock of the back benchers.

Not being unreasonable = he needs to call a GE

Your being unreasonable = Robotic Kier and Ratchet Reeves have gone and Andy just needs to get on with it now.

I dont think we will. He plans to take us back to the 80s....... wants to open up our oil reserves etc.

@Dameputtingonabraveface spoken like a true socialist. All been said before. Have you got any fresh ideas?

mumumental · 20/07/2026 23:45

I think all this has been orchestrated.

All what has been orchestrated, by whom?

FFS, the man only became PM today. Already there has been scaremongering in the press in relation to (unannounced) policies, huge headlines about how the South of England feel he does not represent them (heaven forbid, those of outside the southeast and London have lived with this for decades, but being the troglodytes we are this is apparently okay).

This is the 7th PM since David Cameron came into power since 2010 and totally destroyed and divided this country through his austerity programme (which most studies of any merit conclude did more harm than good to our economy) and then his arrogant decision to take the country to the Brexit referdum- which actually was a vote against austerity- let's blame it on immigration (enter Farage).

This country is fucked. It is like a ponzi scheme in which our young people are being expected to prop up everyone. As my wonderful dad acknowledged, his age group had the best of everything re the welfare state and nhs. The vision at the time was that this would support people out of poverty and we all would benefit. But the world changes and the increasing move to neoliberalsim in a county which a completely stranger to meritocracy means that we have seen the gap between rich and poor grow larger and larger.

As one of the richest nations in the world, their is absolutely no reason that children should live in poverty, and parents have to access food banks etc. The disgusting narrative and division is caused by the sustained negative attacks on those that need to claim benefits, driven by right wing agenda, shows us up as a nation. Lots of these families are actually working, but the state has to substitute low wages because we have allowed businesses to get away with it.

Yes mumsnet is full of threads about how much family's are 'raking in' undeserved benefits, which is odd. Because I work in Child Protection and over the last decade, unless there is a parent drug dealing, all I have seen is increasing poverty and children suffering as a result. And also all services being totally cut because council budgets have been cut by millions year on year. Also, lots of essential services were privitised under the last government. My LA has to fight for placements for vulnerable children, at the low end £5000 a week, for the most vulnerable easily £20 000. Let's not pretend the staff working in these places are well qualified or earning big bucks, the investors are including many from overseas. This is your council tax being spent to make people richer.

Birth is a lottery. The increased nationalism and xenophobia in the UK is hateful. This is a nation built on immigration and the current trend to hatred and mistrust is really worrying for those of us who have roots outside the UK. Many of us have families who escaped persecution and warfare and have made homes here and contributed hugely to the UK. I think most people would do the same if they just happened to have been born in a war zone. Putting up some flags on a lamppost is not really contributing to your society.

So this is a long essay, but there are a couple of sayings. One is that you get the government you vote for, not so much this one as the level of scrutiny and hatred from the press compared to the last lot is pretty telling. People kept the last government in power for 14 years whilst they stripped away the welfare state, bankrupted councils through underfunding (all social care, adult and children's services is provided at local level), privitised essential and statutory services such as children and adults care homes so their mates made money etc. Then there was the whole Brexit shitshow which saw us leave the biggest free trading block in the world. Then we had arguably the biggest benefit giveaway ever during covid, again whilst their mates made loads of money through PPE contracts etc. That is without even touching the no 10 parties, Liz truss crashing the economy etc. etc.

The second saying is that you can tell a lot about a country in the way it treats it most vulnerable. I have little hope that as a nation we are even close to this discussion. A starting point would maybe to allow the new PM a chance and allow some grown up discussions about what needs to change rather than blaming those at the bottom for decades of under investment and social change

mumumental · 20/07/2026 23:19

The rules say he doesn’t need one so people would be angry about the waste of time and money . Apart from Reform, from whom we would be forced to hear miles more ugly drivel.

That’s very true, but the Tories have always been viewed positively on the economy compared to Labour. Some would say unfairly so. Ultimately, the markets will determine what Burnham is allowed to do and what he isn’t. They tend to dislike things that are radical and/or expensive.

It depends what the 'things' are. Radical can please the markets, so can expensive.

Think Brexit has scuppered the right's economic image.

Oh it was the actual leader of the Lib Dems?! Now that really is a party that needs a charisma injection! I keep forgetting they exist, and they have about 60 MPs!

concertinacornflake · 20/07/2026 22:39

There were a fair number of negative outlook ratings under the last government, weren't there? Which was a right wing government.

Not sure Truss did great in this department.

I don’t think be should and I don’t think he will. The Labour Party has a large majority. We need him to get on with the job not waste time campaigning.

This. No more farting about with revolving door PMs and bickering and moaning, just get on with the job.

concertinacornflake · 20/07/2026 22:39

BermudaRhombus · 20/07/2026 22:29

Perhaps that’s what they’ll try. Does rather depend on the UK’s creditworthiness which never fares well under left wing administrations

There was someone ( I can't remember who) who was talking about defence bonds- that you can sell defence bonds- to raise money for defence. I'm not sure whether that would work, but would it?

This is how it works. It seems like an idea worth trying.

Sir Ed Davey sat in a navy suit with a blue patterned tie, in conversation during the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg panel show

Davey says war bonds needed to get defence spending moving 'faster'

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey says the bonds would give the public an opportunity to "support patriotically our defence".

Also what’s happened on defence spending is that Burnham has agreed to fully funding the shortfall, but left it to Healey to find the money. That will only be achievable with significant cuts to other departments which will trigger open warfare in cabinet. I honestly think people who are buying the Burnham boosterism are desperately naive.

The FT is behind a pay wall so unfortunately I can't read past the click bait headline to get the actual story/data proof.

So did you want it or not when requesting the article from the pp?

I have no words for your ramble to be honest. You are completely doom mongering on no basis. The new chancellor said tonight that him and Andy have agreed on defence spending. The fact you and Eds friends are unhappy he didn't get the chancellor job despite the markets etc not wanting him anywhere near number 11 leaves me slightly speechless to be honest. Also I think there's like 5 people in number 10 at the moment if that.

Are you actually listening to the press coverage of how many people have arrived at no 10 and are currently waiting there?! 😆

Blogswife · 20/07/2026 22:06

No of course he won’t (& don’t think he should ) . It’s a massive risk - look how it worked out for Rishi Sunak !!

No, I’m delighted he’s snubbed Ed Miliband for chancellor, but I don’t think Ed or his supporters will see it the same way! Ed isn’t suited to foreign secretary at all, especially for the US relationship. Mahmoud is too right wing and a huge section of the PLP won’t approve of that. Healey and Burnham will fall out very quickly over defence funding - that could be catastrophic. They were expecting to have the new cabinet announced by early evening, but he currently has No 10
packed with people and something is clearly not going to plan.

Could be the headline “Andy Burnham’s tenure begins with troubling signals”.

Just googled FT news and it came up first.

So the unions, banks, investors etc didn't want Ed Milliband so Andy should have ignored the hands that literally feed us and put him in is that what your saying?

Happy to be corrected but last I seen the North Sea oil was exciting contracts.

Let’s start with Ed Milliband - snubbed for chancellor and then coupled with resumption of North Sea drilling. Ed has a big PLP following and they’re furious already! Mahmoud is too right wing for a big section of the PLP. That will end in revolt.
