AIBU to think Andy Burnham might call a general election soon?

To think Andy Burnham will call a general election before Christmas? Yes it would be a massive roll of the dice but,

Reform - don't have the numbers for a GE and there's all frog faces suspicious money bringing him a lot of heat.

Torys - kemi doesn't have a lot of depth, I feel and she hasn't changed much in the polls. She's good at the dispatch box but let's face it anyone could stand up and insult the other side.

By calling a GE Andy would have his own mandate and break the deadlock of the back benchers.

Not being unreasonable = he needs to call a GE

Your being unreasonable = Robotic Kier and Ratchet Reeves have gone and Andy just needs to get on with it now.

I think he might have called one had England won the World Cup. He would have had quite a bounce from that
and Farage is in trouble.

On the other hand he’s third time lucky, will he really risk that?

On the whole, I think he won’t.

These two things have nothing to do with each other.

Including supporters online, it was easy to get surely as I mentioned mn and btl in the press as examples.

Neither of those are actually the party or their comms so it was easy to get context.

If you read it that way you’ll probably agree they set the scene which is great.

The things you describe don't and can't mean them setting the scene, so obviously they wouldn't be read that way.

There's a distinction between an organisation/group of people having done a particular thing at some point and this behaviour having been sufficiently new and influential to constitute them scene setting. Especially in a social media landscape so influenced by someone like Musk who clearly isn't a Labour supporter.

Highest number of seats, but not enough. So Burnham as the PM gets the chance to form a government before Farage would. And he would have all the other parties except Tories and Reform eager for a left of centre coalition government. Anyone frightened of 'the left' should absolutely not be calling for a GE now as they would no doubt dislike a Labour government with Green influence even more.
I don't think he'll do it either. And I'm glad, it would be a bit defeatist so early on.

Yeah I get that I just wondered is there even polling about them getting the highest number of seats? All I'd seen was stuff extrapolating from intended vote size, but with there being an obvious anti-Reform tactical voting bloc that may overestimate the number of seats they could win.

Agree that a hypothetical left coalition is probably going to piss anti-left people off more than a solo Labour government, albeit maybe the Lib Dems would have some impact.

How long do you think a Frankeleft coalition will last?

No idea. Until Burnham called a GE I suppose. After which it would be down to the electorate. I'd be surprised though if PR wasn't part of the price of the coalition, which Burnham appears supportive of. After which it would be coalitions all the way.

No chance, they would lose.

The Labour Party may want AB but the majority of the country do not.

The working population is poorer, taxes are at ridiculous levels and the number who live off benefits when they don't need to is out of control.

We have immigrant gangs running scams and money laundering on every high street.

NhS waiting lists are improving but education is a total mess. Our food security has been undermined. The grooming gangs have not been stopped. Our young people have been priced out of work. Small businesses are struggling.

And all that is due to 2 years of Labour? Nothing to do with 14 years of Tories. Nothing at all.

He does like buses a lot!!

In any normal world he’d be a middle manager at a transport company. It’s crazy that he’s Prime Minister of the UK. I sort of think we deserve what we’re going to get.

LuckyHazelFox · 20/07/2026 15:13

The prick Steve Bray doing his overgrown toddler antics in Downing Street. Twat.

I'm not advocating for a GE. Just pointing out that the people calling for one wouldn't end up with the Reform or Tory government they hope for. They would end up with something they liked a whole lot less.

What are 'manoeuveres' - you mean politicians acting politically?
Not all politicians start angling for the top job any time the faintest of cracks appear in a leader's popularity. Another function of politicians is to stick around long enough to serve the people who voted for them rather than chasing every 'opportunity'.
And in the case of a mayor, you are voting for an individual much more than when we vote in a GE.

He stuck around for ten years as Manchester mayor.

If he's not the Messiah, Manchester will be fine with a new mayor. If he is the Messiah, it's good he's PM as he'll be able to do more from there.

Why should a politician not take an opportunity?

Politics is politics - would you rather not have a democratic system?

(As an aside - Manchester haven't been abandoned, they can vote for a new candidate to continue the work. Either Burnham is a man of mystical powers who can never be replaced or he's a politician who can be followed by another mayor.)

I mean admittedly they have been MIA but the Lib Dems have 61 MPs to the Greens 4. That could change but it's more probable they would go with the Lib Dems than the Greens on numbers. If they only needed 4 seats for a majority why bother with a coalition at all?

They can have a coalition with both at the same time.

I think a left coalition rn would implode pdq and others could benefit from that. Maybe another reason Burnham won’t call a GE.

It would like upend the markets and then what another GE shortly after?

A left coalition with even stronger tax and spend signals would be tough.

You're missing what you wrote.

I agree that Labour used the change in social media to their advantage. Which does not mean they set the scene in doing so. That's yet another way of saying something different to your actual claim about setting the scene in order to try and detract from the fact that it was wrong.

And just think, you could've said all the things that are true without pretending that Labour are the ones who established this.

zurigo · 20/07/2026 14:42

There is zero chance that Labour will called a GE unless the polls shift in their favour, which so far they haven't as a result of Burnham's coup. They've chipped away at Reform's lead, but atm Reform and Labour are neck and neck and neither have enough support (according to polls) to form an outright majority.

5128gap · 20/07/2026 14:42

BrownBookshelf · 20/07/2026 14:37

I broadly agree, except are there even polls to suggest Reform getting the highest number of seats? The most recent show them getting the highest number of votes but it's very difficult to factor in how successful tactical voting will be. We know it's going to be very much a thing, but not the extent.

(I don't think Burnham will call a GE soon either, just interested).

You’re missing the change in social media in recent years. It’s become much more powerful in its impact on politics.

It was something Labour used to their advantage and there were no limits on that. The call for limits now are hypocritical and won’t work. So yes you set the scene, or you reap what you sow if the first can’t be taken in.

You’re also limiting your posts to Labour comms only when it’s of course much broader than that and includes supporters online. Who now apparently don’t like the same back at them.
