To think Andy Burnham will call a general election before Christmas? Yes it would be a massive roll of the dice but,

Reform - don't have the numbers for a GE and there's all frog faces suspicious money bringing him a lot of heat.

Torys - kemi doesn't have a lot of depth, I feel and she hasn't changed much in the polls. She's good at the dispatch box but let's face it anyone could stand up and insult the other side.

By calling a GE Andy would have his own mandate and break the deadlock of the back benchers.

Not being unreasonable = he needs to call a GE

Your being unreasonable = Robotic Kier and Ratchet Reeves have gone and Andy just needs to get on with it now.

Labour as in all of you supporting them. Geez it’s really not this hard. The poster I responded to was annoyed hounding went on and said it had to stop.

From partygate onwards Labour (including Labourites) leant in / created / used whatever you want to hound the last gov. You now don’t like it.

The double standards is breathtaking.

We know they’re having a bad day, but really.

Mywishistoclimbthe3peaks · 20/07/2026 16:34

@BIossomtoes I agree. Nigel has buckled until scrutiny at top level. Will there be a Reform come the next election? And if so will they have enough candidates to stand? Because at the moment they are no where near.

But the first paragraph was agreed way back. We both know that's true. It's just that only one of us was daft enough to make any kind of suggestion that it was a thing Labour specifically had ushered in.

There isn't any definition of Labour that will make that true. Because people who obviously aren't Labour were both calling for GEs when PMs changed and using social media for political purposes well before Labour last administration. No British opposition has the kind of influence you attributed to them once you decided you were talking about social media.

Interesting in a bad way!

Absolutely.

Lowe is interesting because he's a fanatic and therefore uncompromising. He doesn't see Reform as a better bet than any one else, because unless they're all in with his ideology they are not an an ally.

Interesting in a bad way!

Your hyper focus hasn’t changed anything which is Labour are now upset the social media they used is now coming back at them.

By Labour I mean those that support them and believe in that party. There’s been a few stop using SM in this way posts. Which obviously won’t happen but is also incredibly hypocritical.

As long as he leaves my private pension alone 😆 🤣

🍌isn’t it?

I might suggest shorting the UK house builders, although that ship has already sailed.

UK 30-year yields 5.74% - up 1.6% intraday.
(For context, during the Truss mini-budget, they hit 5%)

Not looking good for Andy.

The past centre right lot seem to have gone all People's Front of Judea. I know Reform wouldn't have won Makerfield anyway, but it did surprise me that Restore decided to contest it when it couldn't be ruled out that vote splitting would hand the seat to Burnham. It was quite a contrast to the Workers Party explicitly standing aside in favour of the Greens in Gorton and Denton.

I'm focusing on what you said, which is that Labour set the scene. Whether you mean people actually known to be Labour members, activists and MPs or people who said things you didn't like on MN, they were not setting the scene because they didn't have the power and nor were they doing anything new.

There's nothing wrong with slagging Labour people off for being hypocrites now whilst not trying to pretend there's anything new about it. You overshot.

I think you’re focusing too much on the opposition calling for an election. I’m talking about the broader criticism via SM which benefited Labour. Supporters were happy to use it and now don’t like it back.

Well, she has a point. I grew up as a girl under Margaret Thatcher, and love her or loathe her, it was never a question in my mind that a woman couldn't be prime minister, if she had the ambition or aptitude for it!

Totally, but the aptitude part is crucial, of course.

BrownBookshelf · 20/07/2026 16:13

5128gap · 20/07/2026 16:02

This is true. Other than by their supporters, Reform are loathed and seen as the worst possible option. Not just around their policies, but also because they're inexperienced, incompetent and a bunch of wrong uns. I think tactical voting will only be used to harm not benefit Reform.

It is feeling like that.

You're according MN far too much importance, although in fairness you didn't actually say that in the first place and only tried to make it about MN once you'd begun the goalpost moving process. MN and BTL are two small parts of the wider internet landscape.

Labour did not set the scene for current opposition calls for a GE. There is no possible way to construct that phrase that also gives them the necessary level of influence on social media as well as accepts the fact that opposition parties were doing it under Brown. It cannot be done.

And lastly, you don't know what my politics are. I'm a floating voter, but you don't know which ways I've floated in which elections. Whereas you, on the other hand, are partisan. Which is why you were daft enough to make such a broad claim about Labour's influence in the first place.

To every young woman and girl let my time in office show there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, your hopes or your dreams.

JFC, does this person have one ounce of self-awareness???

Context shouldn’t make it this difficult for you. I didn’t think it was that hard to get given I cited mn and btl media which are clearly not the Labour party.

And you’re missing the huge amounts of criticism aimed at the last gov including on here. You’re getting similar now and don’t like it. But thought it ok then. Reap what you sow etc

You say that, and you may well be right.

You can over intellectualise politics however, and Reform’s core voters could prove sticky. If a significant number are willing to hold their noses, what does that say about the level of Labours (un)popularity?

That would prove pretty telling.

You mean if significant numbers of Reform voters will hold their noses and vote Tory to keep Labour out? Yes, I think that's quite possible. Less likely the other way round though perhaps. As Conservatives seem as deeply troubled by the incompetence and criminality of Reform as everyone else. Sometimes it goes beyond ideological distance and people look at things like the mess Reform are making in the councils. The arrests. The links with extremists. The fraud. Conservative voters don't want these things.

It will be like brexit if he does and won’t go the way he thinks.
