AIBU unreasonable to be mildly irritated/ amused by the people who comment “congratulations again” on social media posts? Like, look at me, I’m in the inner circle and already knew this important information?!

Haha like the oh I’m so glad the secret is finally out! Weirdos.

Ha ha, yes

I get it Op. It wouldn’t annoy me as such but I do think that is probably the motivation.

Easterchicken · 20/07/2026 23:00

The cats out the baaaag

Congratulations

It's like look at meee I knew before the great unwashed 🤣🤣🤣

thereisnomeaning · 20/07/2026 23:35

I think it's more that people have already commented to you in person but don't want to ignore your post. However, it would be weird to say congratulations when they've already done it, so they say congrats again. It's just an alternative to ignoring your post. Not an issue for me at all.

You’re being very reasonable here. Like people who think school gate ‘cliques’ are just people talking to their friends, rather than plotting world domination with extra side eye.

Magnalux · 20/07/2026 23:41

Yes also in wedding pictures… thanks for having us .. such wonderful day etc.. to let everyone else know they were invited and you were not

Meckrel · 20/07/2026 23:49

Oh. I thought it was just me.

When DH died, I put up a post to let people from his circle I wasn't directly in touch with know. Most people, including some who already knew posted something supportive or a fond memory. My sister's SIL said something about having been very sorry to hear the news. I don't really know her, have no idea whether she meant anything but exactly what she said, but there was "something" that made it feel a bit off.

Or they’re just being polite and grateful? 🙄

But just send a sincere private text.

Travelfairy · 20/07/2026 23:56

I kinda get what you mean but tbh it is the source that annoys me. It wouldn't bother me for 99% of people but a close family member does this with the sole intention to let a certain few of us know that she knew something we didnt 🙄 we dont care but she thinks we do!!🤣
For everyone else though it wouldn't annoy me tbh

Magnalux · 20/07/2026 23:53

Why, though? You’re on SM and their wedding post comes up, so why not comment there, along with other attendees, so they have a bunch of people saying what fun it was all together? Are you actually saying that you think a normal response to seeing a photo of a wedding you just attended come up on Instagram would be not to comment in a way that makes it clear you were there, in case it makes someone who didn’t make the guest list feel bad?😃

But it's a public post so makes sense to comment on it. Wedding pics, saying it was a lovely day makes sense. Sometimes you just want to say something rather than ignore the post. You can bet they'd be complaining if no-one liked or commented on their post.

Whatodomoney · 21/07/2026 05:12

Oh dear I never even considered this would wind people up 😂
I’ve a few close friends who tend to share big stuff with me and then post about it. I barely use social media but if I’m aware someone’s about to put a post like that up, I’ll keep an eye out for it. I don’t know why, I’ve never thought about it much but seems rude not to comment but rude not to acknowledge I already knew and we’ve maybe shared some discussions/excitement about it.
Honestly for most people it’s not that deep or trying to be exclusive. Never even thought about it!

MrsPapillon · 21/07/2026 08:00

My last word because I’m boring myself now! It’s not people offering congratulations again that are the people in question. The irritation is from people who reply “Phew! Thank goodness this is public now because it’s been killing me having to keep it quiet!!” There’s a difference between that and “Congratulations again”.

They’re not even offering congratulations, they’re just making it all about themselves.

Hackedoffinoldage · 21/07/2026 09:49

Oh my goodness! Like so many have pointed out, “it’s not that deep”! It really is a case of an eye roll and scroll on! I’m not jealous or upset about not being in the know as these are people I wouldn’t expect to be in the know with! It’s honestly just something I’ve noticed and it’s the vibe it gives me. I’m not dwelling on it or losing sleep, was just curious if others noticed it and had the same take! Each to their own but it seems to have brought out some force either way. I’ll carry on eye rolling if it’s all the same, and for those who get it: 🙌!

Lol don't create an entire thread on a subject and then go all "Pikachu face" when people start debating!

Stepmum900 · 21/07/2026 11:09

Yes it annoys me too! Same thing as ‘I’m so glad it’s out there now and we can celebrate properly!’ Etc

AgileMentor · 21/07/2026 15:25

No this annoys me aswell ‘the secrets out’ fuck off. It’s just a way of showing people you knew about it before it was shared with the internet and really no one actually cares.

Like they were going to accidentally write an entire status based off the secret at any point like they can’t control their fingers.

I would honestly and truly read that and not think for one nanosecond second “oh look at them showing off that they knew already”.

And I am SO relieved that this is how I go through life!

I would recommend not seeing society as a shit heap. Can’t be fun for those around you either

I don’t. I see wonders in everything around me, except for insufferable social media big heads, and I’m very grateful that I am not too dense to notice certain people’s very obvious intentions. 😊

You don’t?

Isn’t it sad that we now live in such a sad, pathetic vacuous society

I just read the odd comment like that and think… well nothing but if I ever did I suppose I’d think… I imagine it has been hard to keep it to yourself if you are bursting with pride that your daughter / sister / bestie is pregnant and you just post without thinking 🤷‍♀️

Someone got all that from a Facebook comment??

🤣

No that poster is often on threads talking about how she despairs of society!
