AIBU to suggest my husband takes the box room when we move?

Aibu to give the smallest bedroom to my husband? We’re moving house. It’s for 2 years. My husband and I have separate bedrooms because of his snoring. The new house has 3 double rooms and one box room. Our two children really want a double room each and to be far they’re 18 and 17 and will be hanging out in their bedrooms the majority of time. My husband literally only sleeps in his bedroom, while I spend loads of time working in my bedroom. It seems obvious to me that he should get the box room but he won’t hear of it. I instigated the move so he’s not thrilled in general.

IANBU to suggest it. IABU to insist he does and refuse to accept he doesn’t want to. Unless he’s some abusive, useless , cocklodger , in which case why stay married at all?

Y not I

dottydaily · 21/07/2026 23:15

i would not appreciate the box room if i was paying rent/morgage as an adult in the house.

Endorewitch · 21/07/2026 23:02

Poor guy. Banished to box room!
Obvious who is bottom of pecking order in that house!
Surely one of the girls room can be used by bith as a bed sigting room and they can share it to entertain friends. Or the youngest child has the box room.

allthiscarryon · 21/07/2026 02:48

Unless you have other reasons for not sleeping with him. Snoring can be the sign of underlying issues like apnoa

Sleep clinic assessment ( this is done at home, they send out equipment) and then CPAP or mandible device = no snoring. Shared room.

Hes being a selfish arse. Its not a given your DC will move out any time soon and he just needs a bed. What a knob.

He's being a selfish arse???? I don't think so. Why can't OP use the bigger room to work in and then sleep in the box room? I would not be impressed at being told I had to have a tiny room in a house I didn't even want to move to.

I am paying the rent and we have separate bank accounts @Nothavingagoodvalentinesday

Do you own the mortgage free house without him?

Endorewitch · 21/07/2026 01:50

Vaxtable · 18/07/2026 09:32

I would tell him that he hadn’t sorted his snoring out, he only uses the room to sleep in, and the kids and you get the better-rooms

if he doesn’t like it then sort the snoring

Easier said than done!

Bedroomdilemmas · 21/07/2026 01:34

It’s only me who will use the bedroom for other activities @Hildegard25 , I’ve lived with my dh for 20 years and he goes to bed late and gets up early and never really enters his bedroom otherwise

I suggest you pick who you'd rather live with long term.

If it's your kids, give them the more adult space of a double bedroom, crack on with the pressuring DH to have the box room and if he divorces you over it, never mind.

How much I'd care about that myself would depend on if the snoring is within his control or not. If it's something he can't help and the NHS won't treat it and he can't afford to pay privately then I'd have some sympathy (although I still couldn't share a bedroom with a snorer) but if the cause is self-inflicted or he just refuses to address it I'd be mad as all hell at the selfishness and wouldn't much care if we split up.

If it's your DH you want to live with long term, you and him get a big bedroom each.

Then you tell the kids they can have bunk beds in the box room for sleeping and can turn the third double bedroom into a sitting room for socialising away from parents and for storing their clothes etc. Depends if they mostly want privacy from you two or from each other and if they're same sex or not, as to whether it'd work.

Alternatively the DC each do a year in the box room.

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 20/07/2026 22:44

Then why did you say upthread that you were letting out your old house to pay the rent in the new one?

Hildegard25 · 20/07/2026 17:47

I have a great idea.

You take the box room (see how you like it!)
Then you'll be free from his snoring,
after all, as you've said, he only will use it for sleeping,
so therefore the same will apply for you.

And you can still both use the double bedroom for other activities.

I'd do this if I could be sure that DH was up and out before 8 am when I would want to start work.

It shows absolute contempt for your DH even to suggest he takes the smallest room in the house. It is also a very poor message to send to the DC - your father is the least important person in this house. If that’s really how you feel I suggest you divorce him and let him lead a decent life with someone who values him.
if you love him you should take note of the old saying “Snoring is the sweetest sound this side of heaven. Ask any widow.”

Wow!

We’re renting rooms out in the old house to pay the rent of the new house. The mortgage is paid in the old house. We’re renting the new house in a location that we all love. My dh isn’t very into the move as he loves the old house but we all agree that the location of the new house is much better. It’s just for 2 years as it suits the kids schooling and gives us time to make a more permanent solution. The bedrooms are the problem.

If you are letting out rooms in the old house to pay the rent on the new one then in what way are you “paying the rent?” Your old house is mortgage free so presumably you both own it. That means you are both paying the rent on the new place. I suspect from what I’ve read that you have a high opinion of yourself and a low one of your DH. This doesn’t bode well for your future relationship. I’d be willing to bet this move will strain your marriage and the odds will shorten if you make him use the box room.

How can people ‘sort out’ their snoring? There’s a lot of mean people on this thread!

Lots of gadgets to help like chin straps, jaw guards, nasal straps etc and obviously if your spouse is a snorer use earplugs or sleep buds. Far better than booting them out into the spare room!

The same could be said about OP she only needs a bed so why can't she take the prison cell room 😆

villadicance · 18/07/2026 09:39

Your kids "really want" big rooms. So do you. Why is it him who has to compromise when he didn't even want to move?

You sound like you despise him.

I think the obvious compromise is that you share the biggest room and the box room just has a bed.

My DH snores too - it's a pain. But it's not fully in his control. He has been investigated for sleep apnoea (told he doesn't have it after a full sleep study), he isn't overweight, he has tried the standard things (wedge pillow, mouth guard all that). He still snores very loudly. It isn't something you can just overcome with some willpower

Mine was the same, went private, told he had over large tonsils, had them removed, mostly fixed now unless he sleeps on his back.
I'd suggest the main bedroom is shared except one of you sleeps in there, maybe take turns at first but eventully one of you will naturally end up sleeping there as a preference.

Ilikesundays · 19/07/2026 10:44

Unless you want to break up your marriage, don’t put your dh in the box room. What are the sleeping arrangements in your current property? Have you tried earplugs? What work do you do that you can’t do elsewhere in the property? The two DCs will move out soon which will free up a double bedroom. Can you not sleep in the boxroom (and work in the double bedroom when no-one is sleeping there) in the meantime? And, as you say, it’s only for 2 years.

justasking111 · 19/07/2026 10:37

@Bedroomdilemmas your life sounds busy enough without all the hassle of being a landlord with all the new rules coming in especially. We're selling our rental because of all the courses that the government send which I have to pay for and pass. Tenancy rights are doing a 180 degree turn because of housing shortages.

You could buy in the new area rather than paying rent.

FlyingCatGirl · 19/07/2026 10:28

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 14:32

Are you happily married? I could not ever seriously ask is it ok for my dh to sleep in the box room. No, it isn't. If he was happy with it fine but he isn't. I mean occasionally fine if one of you is ill but not as a permanent fixture.

My dh snores, I use sleep buds to mask it. How very bizarre to have a dh sleeping elsewhere every night.

Why are you even moving if he doesn't want to? I don't care who is paying the rent decisions like this should be agreed by both.

It's not bizarre, that's just you looking down your nose at people and trying to find fault in other people's relationships!

My partner and sleep in separate beds, we had to make the change because we were becoming sleep deprived because my partner not only snores, he tossed and turns in his sleep which adds to the snoring problem because he'll keep ending up on his back. Unfortunately due to fibromyalgia and possibly being peri menopausal also I don't sleep as deep as I should and dream vividly and can breathe noisily at times as a result and that disturbs my partner! Why would we not change that situation? Maybe you don't have to get up to go to work but we had to and we needed to be able to sleep.

We share a bed on holidays but again it can be exhausting because sleep is impacted.
