Bring back the death penalty in this case

AIBU to wish for the death penalty. How a mother can kill her baby with a hairdryer.
I read this to my husband who asked me to stop and was crying.
I'm Christian and am taught that all but one sin is forgivable.
BUT Our Lord also said that to harm one little one , you are better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be thrown into the sea.
While some interpretations claim it means misleading them, I think it's much more than this.
Today I feel bereft of love for the human race.
Of course this monster will claim Domestic violence, drugs , mental health etc.
I hope, as there is no death penalty, that she spends the rest of her life begging to die.
Sorry right now, all I can say is "Father forgive them. For they know not what they do".....because right now I Can't.

I am not in favour of the death penalty at all. I’m also not in favour of people who hide behind their religion(s) and use that as a reason to be in favour of it when one of the 10 commandments is thou shalt not kill. I’m not religious but I was brought up going to church every Sunday. Based on what I was taught as a child, murder is wrong for any reason. I take that to mean murder by the state (death penalty).

I am surprised that a desire to bring back the death penalty is being linked to hard right Christians. I thought Christians said Thou Shalt Not Kill?

Exodus 20:13 "You do not murder." (LSV)

Exodus 20:13 "Thou shalt not kill." (NKJV)

It depends on what version of the Bible one reads.

The word kill or murder, is from the Hebrew Strongs H7523.

Strong's Hebrew: 7523. רָצַח (ratsach) -- To murder, to slay, to kill (biblehub.com)

So yes, the so called inspired word of God that some people insist we live by, has words with multiple meanings. And nobody appears to have asked Moses to clarify it.

That is just one reason that I choose to ignore it. Another is that Christians appear to be undecided if the 10 commandments are included in "the new covenant". Most seem to say they are. But that really makes no logical sense. Because they kept that put scrap the "death for eating shellfish" stuff.

Bots again 🙄

Ovoemconserva · 17/07/2026 17:34

Can we do it with an hairdryer too?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/07/2026 17:29

Back to Biblical interpretation again. The commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' uses a Hebrew word more closely associated with 'murder'.
The vast number of people God smites down in the Bible would suggest that 'legal killing' - or 'killing your enemies' is absolutely fine - but you really shouldn't go round unlawfully killing people.

Always knew my theology degree would come in useful one day 😆

She denies it. A pathologist said the injuries were not consistent with the use of a hairdryer,

yet she was convicted,

we don’t know for certain what happened. So the death penalty isn’t really appropriate

It’s a no from me, however heinous the crime. It’s not because I’m some bleeding heart liberal either, some people don’t deserve to walk among us.

However, to bring it back means there is the potential for miscarriages of justice and pardoning a corpse is no good. It may be that only one 1 in a <insert large number> of convictions are wrong, but would you still be OK with the DP if you or your loved one were wrongly convicted and sentenced to die?

Ruth Ellis was given a conditional pardon just in the last week. The last woman executed in the UK.

So yes, I totally agree with you.

As a Christian I very strongly oppose the death penalty.

Tryagain26 · 17/07/2026 17:09

I don't believe in the death sentence in any circumstances.
And neither would a true Christian.

The thread title makes no mention of child abuse. And yes, some abuse survivors do need this information before they open a thread.

It doesn’t need to specify. It’s a thread about the death penalty. If people are likely to get triggered by abuse they can employ personal responsibility and not open the thread.

AnAutumnCrow · 17/07/2026 16:56

From a stupid thread title via a specious, stupid argument to a vacuous conclusion … what a waste of time.

Reading more into this case, it seems the baby might have died or been unconscious first from hypothermia, and the mother was attempting to warm her head and hands up, then passed out leaving the heat on her.

Horrifying, either way.

ScrambledEggs12 · 17/07/2026 16:01

I clicked the wrong option by mistake, YABU

sesquipedalian · 17/07/2026 16:00

OP, according to,the BBC report, “expert witness Dr Timothy Burge, a burns specialist, told the court that it was his view the heat injuries did not cause the baby's death.
"It could have been that she was already dead," he said.”

In which case, you would be putting to death a mother who did not kill her baby. I could quite believe that this mother found her baby dead and in her intoxicated state, tried to “revive” it or warm it up with the hairdryer, because if the baby had died, it would be cold.

Obviously I don’t know what happened, and the verdict came quite quickly, but if there is any benefit of the doubt to be given, then surely the OP as a Christian would wish to do so. I don’t think it’s at all Christian to wish for the death penalty for anyone, or indeed to wish for them to live the rest of their life in torment - as I dare say this mother undoubtedly will.

The death penalty is never the answer, regardless of the crime. Justice should protect society, hold people accountable, and uphold the value of human life without resorting to execution. Societies that still use capital punishment are on the wrong side of human rights.

Relying on (and misunderstanding) claptrap from the bible only weakens the argument. Scripture is not authority - it’s merely myths and stories.

SaySomethingMan · 17/07/2026 15:50

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/07/2026 14:28

I know exactly what this psalm means. The last two verses are an exhortation to the Jewish people to enact vengeance against the children of the Babylonians - their oppressors.
I was simply pointing out that the Bible is rarely consistent in its teaching.

We interpret those verses differently, I guess, which happens a lot with The Bible.

They can’t bring back outdated punishment methods because of ONE book written a REALLY long time ago.

Gandalf says many profound things but we can’t weave them into our legal system.

And what if Enid Blyton had her way? FML.

Murder is abhorrent. But fighting fire with fire has never been the way forward.

I think Blyton was actually a lot more subversive than most people think. Oh, she kept publishers happy with her family values, but there's a streak of strong feminism/challenge to accepted norms there.

OK, well I’d add child abuse to that.

Where was your god to protect this innocent baby? And the millions of abused children, many of which were abused by the church…

And the people who have to be present, prison governor, prison officers who have to escort the condemned, the doctors who have to certify death. Not to mention the executioners themselves. Some of whom have committed suicide.

There is a fairly common argument among US evangelicals that the death sentence is good because most of the condemned convert to Jesus while on death row. And apparently, many of the people doing the work feel they are doing "The Lords Work". They are killing the person, but saving the soul.

Yup. That logic makes my head spin, but plenty believe it.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 17/07/2026 15:26

Did you not read the bit in the bible that says "thou shalt not kill"?

Or the bit that says "There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?"

Maybe focus on that plank in your own eye before calling on MN for the death of others. Wink

Basing the justice system on one rando poster (who doesn't come back)'s interpretation of a work of fiction from thousands of years ago?

Sounds like a great idea. Why not?

And the OP got the meaning of the Bible verse wrong.

Jesus was not talking about physical harm done to children. He was saying people should be like children and believe what he, Jesus, was saying. And that if anyone tries to turn them away from believing in him, then it is the de-convertor who should be killed.

According to Jesus, If I, as an apostate Christian, now atheist, tell the OP to not believe, then it is me for the chop. It's the one sin that can't be forgiven. According to Jesus.

No, it’s implied in the title it’s not going to be a thread about baking cakes. Do people really need spoon fed this information?

The thread title makes no mention of child abuse. And yes, some abuse survivors do need this information before they open a thread.

The death penalty doesn't really hurt the person you put to death. It hurts their family. Who are innocent.

However, I do think that people who have commited murder should be able to request euthanasia if they wish to.
