Bring back the death penalty in this case

AIBU to wish for the death penalty. How a mother can kill her baby with a hairdryer.
I read this to my husband who asked me to stop and was crying.
I'm Christian and am taught that all but one sin is forgivable.
BUT Our Lord also said that to harm one little one , you are better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be thrown into the sea.
While some interpretations claim it means misleading them, I think it's much more than this.
Today I feel bereft of love for the human race.
Of course this monster will claim Domestic violence, drugs , mental health etc.
I hope, as there is no death penalty, that she spends the rest of her life begging to die.
Sorry right now, all I can say is "Father forgive them. For they know not what they do".....because right now I Can't.

You are cherry picking your scriptures.
Jesus says turn the other cheek...he is speaking to a crowd of ordinary people, about forgiveness.
Judges says an eye for an eye .....because its about punishment fitting the crime for law keepers. We are supposed to trust those in this position to carry out the punishment fitting the crime.
But then as atheist you would love to poke any holes in the vengeance of almighty God and the instructions he gave to his Judges. But brush off God's vengeance at your peril.

Edited

Shouldn’t you leave it up to God to judge?

The opening poster calls themselves a christian yet chooses to ignore both a commandment (that you shouldn't kill) and scriptures. Romans 12:19 ".... Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord".

As a life long atheist (but brought up in a country that is nominally Christian) the hypocrisy is breathtaking, but not unexpected.

Why would a thread about the death penalty be about abuse?

Empathy with survivors of abuse isn't a bad thing, you know.

I’m not sure I said a thread about the death penalty would be about abuse. It’s not going to be about flowers and ponies though is it? There is a fair chance that it might be triggering to someone who has suffered abuse though, so easy to avoid.

ThaMiSgith · 19/07/2026 14:29

caefe · 17/07/2026 17:02

It doesn’t need to specify. It’s a thread about the death penalty. If people are likely to get triggered by abuse they can employ personal responsibility and not open the thread.

I don't know and I don't care to be honest.
I am an atheist, there is no masterplan and in the case of certain crimes I don't particularly care why.

So you also have no interest in knowing why people do certain things ?

You just mark it down as "evil".

QuintadosMalvados · 18/07/2026 06:40

RedTagAlan · 18/07/2026 06:27

Where does this evil come from ?

You don't have to be religious to believe some people are evil, either.
I am an atheist and I certainly believe some people are evil.

It simply means that they are sadistic pieces of shit.

QuintadosMalvados · 18/07/2026 06:13

I'm an atheist and I STRONGLY believe in the death penalty for certain crimes.
I'd have no qualms about this woman being killed.
It would also save money.

I'm a bit more open-minded about what adults do to other adults in the sense of if another adult kills another adult, I'll at least hear them out.
Who knows the person they killed could have been abusing them and they snapped.
This, though, no possible excuse.
Any crimes involving sadistic harm of children should be met with the death penalty.
And make them wait a few years so that other prisoners can make their life more difficult in the interim.

thetinsoldier · 18/07/2026 05:48

Did you feel the same way about the men who raped and killed Preston Davey, or do you feel more strongly about this woman? If so, why?

what case? You didn’t link anything

In Aberdeen a 28 year old woman killed her baby with a hairdryer. Tried to link BBC article - can’t paste URL for some reason. Hideous.

I agree completely. When we label something as 'evil' we remove the humanity of it and therefor avoid taking any responsibility. Nothing happens in a vaccum. Nothing is 'evil'. Theres always a sequence of events. Theres always reasons and its our duty to actually deal with those in order to prevent further awful things from happening.

Yup. Personally it is another example of religion holding humanity back.

I posted above about Ruth Ellis being conditionally pardoned. She was an abused woman and, and today she would likely have been found of manslaughter. But back then, in living memory, she was dismissed as evil, and the real issue of abuse was swept under the rug.

On the same thing, it's not long since we were executing "witches" for being "evil".

Alltheducksandgeese · 18/07/2026 05:26

RedTagAlan · 18/07/2026 04:25

The problem with the concept of evil is that it is a concept. It does not exist. It's a construct to be something the opposite of the "good God". So for an atheist like me, there is no God and therefore no evil. Because the supernatural does not exist.

My feeling is that using terms such as "evil" or "demonic", are really letting society off the hook. To say someone is "evil" is implying they are controlled by a non existent anti God entity. But it might be something in society that caused a person to be that way.

Thats an awful crime but so is allowing the state to murder people.
The death penalty is disgusting and a pointless waste of time and money.

nam3c4ang3 · 18/07/2026 05:22

I come from a country that has the death penalty so I’m for it in certain cases - I know of a personal case where the death penalty was given as well. The guy admitted he did it - and was quite proud of it. So irrefutable evidence.

RedTagAlan · 18/07/2026 04:25

ZoeCM · 17/07/2026 18:36

The problem is, there is often a total inability to recognise this fact, so the presumption is that people committing heinous acts are invariably "monsters", or "evil", and that's nothing more than a convenient distraction from the fact that they are human, and human beings sometimes do terrible things under certain circumstances. There is no such thing as evil, just unwell, aberrant, and atypical human beings.

I don't think this is true. The "certain circumstances" for Ian Huntley, for example, were probably just that he was sexually attracted to the ten-year-old girls who walked past his house, so he lured them in, assaulted them, and then killed them so they couldn't go to the police. Sounds pretty evil to me.

How is sexually abusing a baby not deliberate abuse?

Preston was sexually abused.

The baby killed by neglect, the case where the OP wants the death penalty for the mother wasn't, seemingly was not deliberate abuse.

Glitchymn1 · 17/07/2026 23:08

Yes, where there’s irrefutable evidence they should be put to death, some might say it’s the easier option than a lifetime of daytime tv and prison dinners. Or where guards have no control and prisoners die by the hands of other prisoners.
Why keep them alive? Venables for one, I can think of better uses.

We do worse to animals for nothing.

YABU. You’re not emotional because you’re a Christian its because you’re a human

Exactly. I can't ant abide these righteous people who think they're morally superior because of an outdated book written 2000 yrs ago that has some incredibly dubious things in it. People who believe it word for word are brainwashed nutters. I actually believe in God/higher power just not religion which is divisive and the cause of most wars.

You’ve misread. By ‘this case’, @EilonwyWithRedGoldHair means the case that is the subject of this thread not the case where Preston died.

I cannot fathom how anyone can abuse or kill a child

Mentally disturbed people, who are possibly also in the grip of addiction, do all sorts of things that mentally well, happy, fit and healthy people will not ordinarily do.

The problem is, there is often a total inability to recognise this fact, so the presumption is that people committing heinous acts are invariably "monsters", or "evil", and that's nothing more than a convenient distraction from the fact that they are human, and human beings sometimes do terrible things under certain circumstances. How a mother can kill her baby with a hairdryer

The expert cited at the trial maintains that in his view the child was likely dead before the hairdryer ever came into the picture.

Where was the father? Missing as usual.

Naunet · 17/07/2026 21:27

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 17/07/2026 18:27

Preston was deliberately abused, and for sexual purposes. A quick read on this case suggests it wasn't deliberate abuse, so the outcome is the same, but intent is not.

It's not "mental gymnastics".

There is no such thing as "evil". It's an abstract concept dreamt up to explain things that are difficult to comprehend when the premise is the individual in question is no different to any normal person. This is the problem with the concept. Acts perceived as "evil" are not carried out by normal people, because normal people don't behave in these ways.

That repulsive pair who were shoving their penises in a baby’s throat…. Just a bit misunderstood were they and in need of some therapy?

This is a ridiculous leap to the absurd and that fact you posit it as a question shows you know how ridiculous it is, but for the sake of keeping it civil -

People who can do these sorts of things are not "misunderstood", they clearly have disordered and disturbed personalities, so no, "some therapy" isn't even going to touch the sides, and it's not a "mental health" issue either.

Perhaps you could go and read about Personality Disorders, Addiction and suchlike, and move away from dark ages nonsense like believing in "evil".

Oh and frankly, you can take your idiotic, offensive assertion that this is "excusing murderers" and ram it up your hoop.

Edited

People are fully entitled to describe behavior and people as evil, we all understand what it means. Why do you feel the need to police the language of others, especially when people are just clearly showing their upset at appaling crimes?

LagerLady · 17/07/2026 21:14

The woman has been convicted of culpable homicide, I think not murder. So even if Scotland had the death penalty, she would still get prison. People think we should have the death penalty, so the Southport killer would be executed. He was under 18 so he would not have been eligible.

NotMeAtAll · 17/07/2026 21:05

The irony. Being up in arms about a murderer while wanting the state to carry out murder on your behalf...
