AIBU to think a two-week trip abroad with dad is too much for a five-year-old?

Husband wants to take (then) 5 year old son on trip for 10 days/2 weeks next summer.

i think it’s too long and too far. Think DS will find it too long. Husband adamant it will be fine, wants to do it for bonding etc. Told him to try shorter trip and go from there, 3/4 nights, see how they get on, jump straight to two weeks is extreme, he disagrees. I think two weeks from them then too long and I’ll miss them.

Sounds awesome. Let them have fun together

I went away for 6 weeks with my children, youngest was 4. DS's dad made daily videos for him using lego figures so DS would know he was thinking of him and stay connected. Was a brilliant holiday and I'd have been very unimpressed with my partner if he'd been against it.

You are still married your DH wants to take his child away I’m not even sure why you wouldn’t think this is an amazing.

5yos need to go to bed including on holiday, you’d be out of routine of course but you’d still be getting them to bed at 8 and then… alone in the hotel room. You couldn’t leave. Would be way better with partner and 2yo and you can hang out together and some nights support the other to go for a solo drink or walk. I don’t get this at all.

Well Ive never ever made mine go to bed at 8 on holiday. They would have missed the whole evening

You do realize that most people don't even go out for dinner until later than that in much of southern europe

And I have never sat in a hotel room all evening alone . Doesn't sound a bundle of gun

Floppyearedlab · 17/07/2026 08:58

It's a lovely idea but I would keep it to a week.

I guess this would be totally weird to me- if he wanted to go on a fun child friendly pool holiday but leave me with 2yo I’d be wtf? 2yos love pool holidays!! We can all come or you can make it a bonding weekend.

To be fair, when my DH would take the older one abroad and I’d be at home with the youngest it still felt very much like a holiday for me too of sorts! Life with just the youngest at home was much easier and quieter than life with the two of there 🤣

FedUpCelery · 17/07/2026 08:48

Why not let them go somewhere for the first week and join them for the second week.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/07/2026 08:47

I’d let him go. Have a FaceTime call once or twice a day so he knows you haven’t gone away.

Sherararara · 17/07/2026 08:37

Well that’s the actual issue isn’t it. Kid and dad will be fine. It’s OP who will miss and/or resent them for going away.

Yeah and I think that’s ok to say. 2 weeks is a long time not to see your 5yo and a 1 week trip (or even two 1 week trips) would still be wonderful for the kid and dad.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/07/2026 08:41

This isn’t about you DC, it’s about you.

gotmyselfintoapickle · 17/07/2026 08:31

I think it’s a nice idea but 2 weeks is a long time for you to not see your son. Instead of phrasing it like he needs to ‘build up’ to a longer trip, could you explain your miss them and suggest he does a week instead?

What?? Why can’t you and the 2 year old go on this trip too and they can take days out together to bond? I can’t lie, this sounds very bizarre. Family’s normally go on those sorts of foreign holidays together? I’d be really p-off if they were going on a jolly for 10 days and leaving me with a 2 year old. Especially if I was then expect to use my leave to cover boring stuff later in the year. 10 days is a big chunk out of that holiday leave.

I also think husband has unrealistic expectations of what a 5 year old can handle. Most theme parks with a couple of exceptions, are not aimed at children as young as 5. He’ll also spend a lot of time in his room with a napping child, and will have to hang out in the bedroom from 8pm to have any chance of maintaining a normal bedtime routine. If you were there at least he’d have company?

That leads me to my next question. Any chance he’s having an affair and will be meeting up with someone with kids while there- and oh look they get on so well and hang out together all holiday? It’s so weird and unreasonable I’ve got to wonder what’s going on there.

😂😂😂😂

Of course he's having an affair. Maybe the 5 year old is also tge AP's child and not OP's 🫢. Ridiculous!

@HonestLimeHam , I think yabu or maybe just anxious. I was taking my daughter away for 2 and 3 weeks at a time to spend time with family abroad. As your husband is a good and competent parent; they'll be fine.
The beauty of technology now is you can also facetime often.

Sherararara · 17/07/2026 08:30

It’s perfectly fine. Massive bias in this thread. “It’s far too long to be away from
his mum”. Why on earth?
Hopefully OP will on say this is a reverse.

Sprogonthetyne · 17/07/2026 08:30

I'm taking my 6yo (and 9yo) away for nearly 3weeks, so I don't think the trip itself is the problem. However it seems really unfair if husband and one child get a holiday but you and the other one don't. Can't you all go somewhere together, and just have some split days, when one of you takes 5yo to the theme park and the other takes the toddler to the pool

He’s taking his 5yo away to meet his affair partner? Yeah…… course he is 😂

DB bought my 2 year old nephew over from the US to come on a weeks holiday with his English family. Mum couldn’t get off work. He had his grandparents, aunts/uncles/cousins to play with and had a great time. Why should he miss out on that?

Cornflakes44 · 17/07/2026 08:26

HonestLimeHam · 16/07/2026 22:19

He is hands on, don’t have any issues with parenting. I’m more worried about son missing me and home.

He probably will miss you of course but then his dad will be there and they’ll be doing fun stuff and he’ll get over it. I think you are centring your feelings here a bit too much. I think mums can easily fall into a habit of thinking we’re the most important parent, which shouldn’t be the case. I think it’s a great idea. He’s 5, not 5 months, he’ll be fine and it’s a good lesson about dad being an equal parent rather than a sub in when mums not there.

Ivyisararename · 17/07/2026 08:24

Two weeks is too long .
If you feel it is too long for your 5 year old, then it is. I agree.
It somehow makes it worse if it’s a long flight, a distant country.
One week is long enough for the first trip, and for the first long separation from you, his mum.

RoseField1 · 17/07/2026 08:20

YABU, he will be fine. If he's homesick then DH will have to deal with it. The fact that he feels he needs to take DS out of the country for 2 weeks to 'bond' suggests you may be a bit controlling of DS' time with him?

pictoosh · 17/07/2026 08:15

Allswellthatendswelll · 16/07/2026 22:11

I think this is weird as surely a holiday should be for all the family? Unless it's to solve a childcare issue or visiting family it seems weird.

Maybe in your household. Other people approach their lives/free time/relationships/holidays differently...the variations are endless. No 'surely' about it and it's not that weird.

OP - a year can make a remarkable difference in development. You're basing it on how he is now.
Let this one sit with you for a while. Personally, I can't see anything wrong with it.

Tiddlywinks63 · 17/07/2026 08:14

DS has been taking one or both DGCs away by himself since they were very small. I don’t understand the problem.
He and DGC1 did a 800km cycle trip, camping, when dgs1 was 8, they’ve had a number of fantastic adventures over the years.

Imightbeinthewronghere · 17/07/2026 08:08

I don't understand why all 4 of you aren't going.

Quite. A family holiday benefits everybody. He could take the children away for the weekend one at a time and bond then.

Let him do it and enjoy the bonding time with your little one.
