Page 6 | To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh ^WHY^ do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) ^every^ time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...? They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!) Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?! As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win! !

Irish person here. Tournament football supporter only.
Usually Ireland supporter obviously, then Scotland , but in their absence I have been known to support england, but based on some of the comments on here, i realise why people in other nations struggle to support the England team.

Someone upthread made a snippy comment about Ireland not making it to the world cup. In Ireland there are other very popular sports called Hurling, Gaelic football (male) and Camogie (female) . The hurling in particular makes Football look like a stroll in the park, it is an incredibly exciting, non stop, skilled sport by non professionals ie not getting paid. Football pales in comparison popularity wise in Ireland which may explain to some degree why Ireland arent in the World Cup.

Despite the popularity of Hurling, and Gaelic Football, Irish Rugby has more than shown its mettle against every other playing nation.

I dont come on here belittling England in defeat , I actually felt sorry for the team, feel they were hard done by with refereeing decisions and questionable substitutions. In all honesty at the outset I didnt think they were going to win, I wasnt overwhelmed by many of their performances but still hoped for the best despite my horror of the whole 'its coming home' blurb.

So when youre on a public forum debating about why your team has lost and why you dont routinely get support from other nations, the belittling of other teams lack of achievement in that sport doesnt actually help. I dont actually like the whole 'anyone but england ' mantra as I have English relatives and friends but the attitudes and comments on here are maybe the reason why you dont get that support.

Yet another person who doesnt undersand the meaning of the its coming home song
I also remember my irish Dad getting
Dancing around the lounge when ireland got through to the Quarter finals on penalties in 1990.
So i think
Ireland might also get a bit excited if they were in the world cup.

Jude has run himself ragged in these games ! Even in the arge game he is in goal and is the only person who runs at the striker !
He's everywhere !

Look on x or u tube " don't be a Messi be a jude" it's a complication of him with the footy kids ! Constantly paying attention , making sure they are ok , not cold offering coats and blankets . He is the only one or two of the players who stopped to talk to a disabled reporter 😍

Very true!!! 3rd would be very nice though. I don't think England have ever come 3rd before. I mean, they have never done better than 4th place, apart from when they won in 1966 of course.

I'd be very pleased and happy if they come 3rd!

1st would have been better obvs! 😆 3rd is still very good though - out of 48 countries who qualified... Proves (along with being one of only 8 countries who have ever won,) that they are up there with the elite! 😎

Ireland didn't qualify and Scotland were knocked out earlier.

My point is - it's not better to get further in a knock out competition, as England were still knocked out.

I'm sick of England getting knocked out at the semi final/final stage
