To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

Mexico aren't as good as Argentina.

In the whole first half and into the second half including our goal we were by far the better team.

Metalmotha · 16/07/2026 11:26

Because they’re not as good at kicking the bag of air between 3 bars as the other group of blokes! That’s it

ghostyslovesheets · 16/07/2026 10:14

This! I thought the ref did well to be honest- we were outplayed and the move to defensive play left us little chance to counter attack.

But that’s football - the team you love can be beaten, you can be relegated, you can win the toughest games and lose ones you should win. Sometimes I hate football and sometimes I love it!

Agree! It’s a metaphor for life; incredible highs, incredible lows. Winners, losers. Unfairness, cheating. Glory and pain. Roll on the new season xx

TaleOfTwoHalves · 16/07/2026 11:25

The Argentinians play in a manner that is quite different to ours. Like a pantomime and not at all composed. There’s a lot of hate for England, pressure probably gets to them. FIFA can’t stand England either. We are not a winning team at tournaments. Who cares about coming third? If means nothing.

They did fail. They did not win.

As a country we also don’t invest in our own grassroots.

hay5689 · 16/07/2026 11:25

Because they are not good enough. They had an easy run and until last night the toughest game they had was Mexico who are ranked 14th. The first time they played another top team it showed how hyped up they are, when they struggled to beat Ghana it was clear that they weren’t good enough to win the tournament.

Blueberrybonanza · 16/07/2026 11:25

Because we are not as good as the media make us out to be and we play a very different style of football to other teams, which does us no favours
saying that I have no idea what the tactics were after it went 1-0 it looks like we lost the plot and decoded to only play short balks in Argentinas half, was easy to see those goals were coming by the constant attacking which is how Argentina play

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 16/07/2026 11:24

Once they score a goal they seem to sort of relax and then the other team don't so they don't win.
For whatever reason England just isn't quite good enough to win. On a slightly different note does anyone think it's ridiculous that England are France have to play on Saturday? Is anyone going to watch it or really care?
I bet even the teams would rather just go home today and spend time with their families.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/07/2026 11:23

Because knock-out football is hard.

I would ask not why we "only" got to the semi final but why for years until 2018 we got knocked out earlier in the competition or didn't even qualify, even for the Euros at times.

Our recent record isn't bad at all, but I feel that overall we should have a similar record to France and we are nowhere near that.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 16/07/2026 11:22

This is the first football match I've ever watched, and I didn't even watch the whole thing, so I might be talking absolute rubbish, but to me it looked like they sort of gave up after scoring the first goal and proceeded to basically leave it all to the goalie. I don't know why. I also thought that the Argentinian team were allowed to be a lot rougher without getting any yellow cards, I didn't understand why the rules were different.

sonjadog · 16/07/2026 11:22

Pepperlee · 16/07/2026 11:19

So the Norwegian team played but never expected to win? Really? I'd have thought that was the point of being in the tournament for any team and their fans.

To see how far they get? To get the best placing that they can? Do you really think every single team who went into the World Cup thought they were going to win it??

FourSevenFour · 16/07/2026 11:21

Why would you expect England to win?

There's nothing inherrently better about English players or team. Countries like Argentina or Spain have roughly comparable population size, and being economically a bit weaker, maybe the dream of becoming a pro player is/was a bit stronger there some 10- 20 years ago.

Mexico aren't as good as Argentina.

I would also add ...

Watch England vs. Ghana for an example of how a good low block works against unimaginative opposition and kills the game.

Watch England vs. Mexico for desperate defending that just about gets you over the line.

EssCarGo · 16/07/2026 11:19

thefireinyourheart · 16/07/2026 10:15

It’s very obvious that the Argentinian players said something. Likely forgetting Bellingham can speak Spanish.

Someone talks about you…do you just walk straight over and hit them in the head?!

Pepperlee · 16/07/2026 11:19

sonjadog · 16/07/2026 10:58

I don't think anyone in Norway ever thought our team was going to win the World Cup, so therefore we rejoiced for every win and were pleased they got as far as they did before they got knocked out. In England, it seems like there is an expectation that they are going to win, and so anything but that is seen as a failure. Maybe there needs to be a change of attitude among English fans? They did well and got far. They were never going to win.

I can't understand why that line that was so effective against Mexico failed.
I think at the moment we've got the best team we've ever had.

Hopefully they can be proactive against the French and shine.

Mexico aren't as good as Argentina.

PinotandPray · 16/07/2026 11:17

FrenchandSaunders · 16/07/2026 09:01

The Argentinians played very dirty last night ... if the ref had been doing his job properly the result may have been different.

Having said that, it was a big mistake to go so defensive after that first goal.

Spot on!

Aluna · 16/07/2026 11:15

I’ve been through too many of these not to know they’re just not good enough to win.

Malinia · 16/07/2026 11:13

3luckystars · 16/07/2026 09:03

But they didn’t ‘fail’ at all? Do you only like participating if you win? That’s no fun.

Objectively, they did fail. They lost the match.

Tryanalogue · 16/07/2026 11:13

As they progress through the competition, they meet better teams.

badger2005 · 16/07/2026 11:11

Sorry I haven't RTFT so don't know if this has already been said, but when you think about it there are multiple teams at the start, and by the end, just one winner. All teams but one will lose a match and so be 'out'. Just statistically, the experience of not being the champions is massively more probable for every team than the experience of being the champions! And if you are a good team, then your experience will be - you got quite close (last 8, or even last 4!) and then lose.

ComeOnEngland12 · 16/07/2026 11:09

We played in the last ten mins how we should have been playing after Gordon got us the goal. It's how argentina played . We were too little too late.

Ibrox · 16/07/2026 11:07

England is a very good team, but not good enough.

PeachyDaisy · 16/07/2026 11:06

MsPavlichenko · 16/07/2026 10:45

Sixteen I think ?

Either way, the field was tiny compared to what it is. Much harder to win one now

Gowlett · 16/07/2026 11:04

boxtop · 16/07/2026 10:47

We're a top 5 team. Sugababes were a successful pop group. Kim Clijsters was a successful tennis player. Jennifer Lawrence is a successful actress. We're just not Taylor Swift or Roger Federer.

But also we have a sort of annoying combination of entitlement and risk-aversion which leads us to try and defend when we're 1-0 up instead of trying to score another. We've historically had quite unglamorous footballers and tended to play boringly and defensively. Right now we've actually got unusually creative and attacking players and we can play attractive football but the national psyche hasn't quite caught up to this.

A good take on it. Talent + hard work x killer edge = winner! It is a magic formula.

zanahoria · 16/07/2026 11:02

I remember when we were falling at the first or send hurdle or were not even at the races

I will take this over that
