To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

No it's not all evil Brits to blame. It's also not the current English people's fault what happened.

However, a lot of bad things happened and people remember. A lot of them are not going to support England in football. Why would they.

Ans also why do you want them to? Isn't it enough that English people support England?

They can support whomever they like. Some scots buying a different shirt for whomever England was playing was a bit pathetic though. They must have quite a collection.

England were holding on to dear life at the end of that match and that was against 10 men and no real star player.

You can't do that against a better side.

I thought it was England who were down to ten men in the match against Mexico?

'The devastation and damage that the U.K caused in Ireland still affects people to this day'
Ancient history, unlike the Falklands war which was a bit more recent.

Oh fgs Northern Ireland, you knew what I meant, yes? There are plenty of unionists in Northern Ireland it's not all the Evil Brits to blame.

Oh I definitely think many English people would have supported Argentina in that case!

Ireland is not a home nation by the way. Northern Ireland (the bit that the UK took from the rest of Ireland) is listed as a home nation. Best to get that right

Can you imagine if scotland had progressed there is no way English people would have ever have supported Argentina. We have such loyalty for all home nations it is sad to see how full of bile some scots, welsh and irish are. Oh but hang on some of the English did bad things centuries ago, hence the hate. The argies invaded a British country causing the deaths of many service people much more recently but hey, what's wrong with that!

'How full of bile some Irish are'

Sigh. I have an Irish father. I lived in Ireland for a while.

The devastation and damage that the U.K caused in Ireland still affects people to this day.

A lot of Irish (Republic) people will not be supporting England in football. That's understandable.

Would you expect the Ukraine to support Russia in sport?

I do blame Tuchel a bit for the loss too (as many others on here do.)

I do wonder, deep down, if these Non English managers deliberately stop England from winning. Tuchel is bloody German. Why would he have the best interests of the England team at heart?

Sven Goran Erikkson is Swedish.

Fabio Capello is Italian.

Maybe I'm just chatting shit, and spouting wild conspiracy theories.

Maybe not.

I do not want another non English manager for the England team.

We bombed his gran's house in Dresden during WW2. 😁 That's what's behind it all.

(joke. Honest.)

Yes but this is an international competition so should be played to global rules. There are cameras everywhere. The ref. could have been informed about the barging off the ball by the fourth official or the VAR team, some of it happened in front of the ref. They should have had a warning and then been booked for the next offence. Guess what team’s player was booked first???

I loathe the dark arts in English football too. Unfortunately they tend to benefit the bigger clubs who tend to get the balance of the decisions so there’s no incentive to crack down on it.

the ref did see it. He was on argentina's side.

I was reading articles about the referee. Apparantly Messi has never lost when this referee has been in a match. He is nicknames as 'Mess's favourite referee'

This. ^ It's only when anyone supports the ENGLISH that some people seem to have a problem though, and particularly if it's an ENGLISH person doing it! 😱

Ultimately Argentina were the better side. Hated all the fous though. It was an ugly matvh.
Latin people have the weather, physique and temerament to win.

I find the way some people react to other team's progress nuts too when their own team couldnt get out of the group stages. Did you see many scots supporting the argies for example? Nothing 'lovely' about that.

Haaland is a Nepo baby. His dad played for Man City.

The same as Wayne rooney's son has just been signed to play professional football

😂😂😂😂

Meaning?

I find the way men react to 'their team's winning or losing absolutely nuts, most women I actually thought were too sensible to enter into this nonsense.

'What has been interesting is some of the lovely stuff I've seen like Norway's rowing'

Norway and England supporters definitely showed class and dignity in defeat though I agree.

In what way did England? I've not seen footage

I couldn't give 2 boots who wins to be honest 😂 I actually really dislike football. I find the level of buying into the hysteria quite mad. I wouldn't even have known who was playing if it wasn't for posts online.

What has been interesting is some of the lovely stuff I've seen like Norway's rowing and Scotland putting cones on statues, noone else who has lost seems to be such sore losers as the England team. As I say I'm just going by online coverage but it has been amusing.

I love how you're accusing me of xenophobia for responding to a post listing every non English person I volved in the England team to blame them in some way while deciding it's all a big co spiracy theory. Wild.

Yeah right.

One person said one thing yet you said 'how typically English'? Isn't making negative sweeping statements based on nationality xenophobia?

Who did you want to win on Wed night? I bet I know the answer.

Oh England didn't win the football tournament... Which non English person can we blame 😂 while lamenting 'why didn't they won't when it's quite clear they didn't win because the other team beat them. So bizarre.

Surely it's all about the money and the potential success. If there was any loyalty involved there wouldn't be any argies playing in English premier teams.

Hmmmm, maybe.

Or maybe the Argentinians play for the England teams to make sure they don't win!

I am defo down a conspiracy theory hole now. 😆

Now there is extensive video, VAR, all angles of the pitch covered there could be a retrospective appraisal by VAR panels and a either rematch ordered or awarded to opposition in the light of cheating, nasty, unsportsmanlike behaviour. Retrospective cards or bans as well. If they knew that barging players off the ball was going to cost them the match they'd be less inclined to do it.

Agree.
I've now seen the two videos of Messi stamping on spences foot and then Anderson's head punch.
Decisons have to be consistent. Can one referee really see all the fouls and make honest desicons with so many hits and kicks coming thick and fast?
