To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

Tell that to Erling Haaland, considered by many as the best out and out striker in the world atm.

There is a place for all heights in football. Messi and Maradonna aren't/weren't that big IIRC.

Yes Messi is tiny. That was kind of my point.

was it just a little love tap do you think @Gloriia

I'm not familiar with a 'love tap'? I'm not bothered what it was tbh, the match was over and it was nothing compared to their grabs and pushes during said match.

Cherrytree86 · 17/07/2026 17:21

Gloriia · 17/07/2026 17:05

Well fine, I'm not bothered if he does? The point is the argies did far worse throughout the actual match and seemed to get away with it. Bit like their scruffy bed sheet protest.

I think it's more stature tbh. Spaniards and argies all seem very small and quick. Surely that's a bonus in this sport.

Oh pipe down. Street fights? In your dreams.
i guess they had every right to make fun of you as you scored one tiny goal. We got through to the final four. So on the back of all the Scottish goading, you got a taste of your own medicine.
Except we are one of the top teams and you are most definitely not.

You've literally proved my point 👏👏
And, yes, street fights.
There have been fewer arrests than usual at this tournament so far. Usually there's a lot of trouble wherever England fans go.
But I personally think this year's improved behaviour is because the Tartan Army showed everyone how to enjoy the tournament, and watch games without fighting after matches. There was never any expectation for Scotland to go further. We know that. We don't pretend otherwise. We just enjoy it for what it is - getting to the WC for the first time in decades, as opposed to being fuming when we get to the final four 🤦🏼‍♀️

I worked in Spain. The climate is very condusive to sport and outdoor life. The people are super fit as a result. Britain not so much.
I imaging latin countries like Argentina have a similar if not more varied climate and outdoorsy culture than Britain does. Plus they put all their emphasis on football rather than rugby, cricket, hockey etc.

His 'light tap' is not allowed. News reports are saying he may face disciplinary action

I don't have the memory of a goldfish. The 'troubles' are irrelevant. NI wasn't even in the tournament.

Argentinians we're holding up a raggy bed sheet with a goady, fake message on it. Do keep up.

You do have the memory of a goldfish. You were the one who brought up Ireland, you started the conversation about it!

you wrote

'We have such loyalty for all home nations it is sad to see how full of bile some scots, welsh and irish are.'

I then pointed out that some Irish people won't support England due to the recent conflict between UK and Ireland .

You then wrote 'ah that's ancient history, the falkland war was more recent'.

I then wrote that the UK/Ireland conflict is actually more recent than the Falkland war.

At that point you then wrote 'what have the N.I troubles got to do with argentina'.Even though you started the chat about it. Such gaslighting!

ComeOnEngland12 · 17/07/2026 16:49

If he does face action then so should Messi and the man who struck Anderson and all the others along with sheet gate gang.

Gloriia · 17/07/2026 16:42

No I saw the match. His light tap was nothing more than that. Unlike the out of control, frothing argies. Still, fifa likes them so it's all good.

That's quite funny. So you don't like it when the other team are rough but its fine when Jude slaps someone on the head.

Do you think that you are perhaps....a little biased?

i think that everyone who was rough and violent was wrong. The arg players should have got yellow cards at least.

Jude should probably face discipliniary action.

ComeOnEngland12 · 17/07/2026 16:40

That player had run on the pitch apparently during the match
And was being rude in Spanish.
Not that it excuse the slap
However throughout the entire game they game in violent and JB repeatedly tries to get anyone's attention after the head jab to anderson.

mindymoo11 · 17/07/2026 16:40

Gloriia · 17/07/2026 16:38

Exactly. Argies behave like little shits and get away with it and a pp is clutching their pearls over a light tap on someone's head, someone who was being a little shit.

That means you won't answer because you see you were wrong.

You certainly have the memory of a goldfish then, seeing as you were involved in the conversation earlier on this thread about it

If I heard the vile comments from the Argentinians and the Falklands sheets being shoved in my face, I would have done more than a little slap to his head. Bellingham was goaded throughout and the ref ignored it.
i can’t wait to see the reception the Argentinian premier league players get. I would sack them all and tell them to go and and get stuffed.

so if someone goaded you, would you slap them on the head?

I think you would be charged for assault if you did that

Are you Argentinian Miss Mindy? Or just someone who supports violence, burning of opponents flags and dirty cheating tactics? Nice

I'm not Argentinian.

You wrote that you don't like violence.

Didn't England player Jude Bellingham hit an Argentina player to the back of his head after the match?

IT was a rough game all round

I liked Tuchel up until this point but his DNA comment annoyed me. We could have won without his changes.

What comment was that ?
I like tuchel also .

hitting anyone should not be allowed.

argentina shoving people to the ground was rough. jude Bellingham hitting the arg player was rough

You are correct.
The referees have been beyond useless.
if you see a player thump someone on the back of the head, which catches them off guard and they fall, I would say that is a red card.

It's played to what the players think they can get away with.

Generally my experience of watching the game in the prem is that players wise up pretty quickly when regulations change. A couple of sendings off is all that is needed to stamp out particular behaviour. The question is whether FIFA actually wants to enforce that to "improve" the game (improve in quotes because it is a matter of perspective as to whether it actually improves the game or not).

I think the quality of refereeing in this tournament has been exceptionally poor. When I watch games in the prem, it always amazes me how good the refs actually are, how much they see and how little actually gets past them.

I think smaller countries with less developed domestic leagues don't really have the opportunities for refs to work with the best (at playing and at cheating) players, don't have access to the technology, review systems and training that refs in the prem have. So there is no reason to expect they should be anywhere near as good. But of course the world cup has to be inclusive in terms of which countries supply the referees.

I would like to see an exchange program set up by FIFA where maybe one or two refs in the top domestic leagues need to be from other countries. This would help bring up refereeing standards in general as they are trained up to deal with the very best players.
