The oppression was of the poor by the rich, on both sides of the border. The Highland Clearances were perpetrated by the Scottish Aristocracy. There were similar clearances in England, not that anyone knows or cares.

I could go on, but I suspect you'll stick to your beliefs. Carry on watching Braveheart if you must, but a closer and wider reading of real history will paint a much more complex picture of the Anglo-Scottish relationship.

Scottish, Irish, Welsh are far more at ease with their place on the world stage, they don't feel like they have anything to prove, they know they are small countries and don't feel like they have to compete in any meaningful way with larger ones. So long as they have the craic along the way that's all that matters. England's a different kettle of fish altogether.

No they haven't. I'm not sure how many international news papers or other international media you consume or how many people from other countries you talk to but Scotland is probably more respected and well regarded than England. Especially since Brexit.

From the outside the comments just looks bitter and spiteful, but then I don't think anywone woudl have expected anything less from them! I wonder how many members of the scottish government will find a 'need' to be in the US, either on government or SNP money, for the final. It’s just a joke but not really clever or funny.

The current Argentinian team chant about the Malvinas in the dressing room after matches. The current Vice President of Argentina put out a statement today about the match being about defeating the English pirates who invaded the Falklands (sic). So for them at least it isn’t a long-ago thing. And even among the ABE Scottish football supporters, there’s quite a split - many see supporting Argentina over England as a step too far (deaths of Scottish soldiers plus the general unpleasantness of the Argentine FA and team.) The SNP do make themselves look a bit dickish here.

You obviously haven't heard some of the stuff the Argentinian fans are coming out with.

What's the problem with Scottish people choosing to support Argentina (or any other team) over England? Isn't it very common for geographically close teams to have a particularly strong rivalry (e.g. Newcastle/Sunderland)? And its either done in a spirit of fun, or at any rate well within the legit passions that football provokes.

I think it is quite a cheerful thing to read about Scottish people who support 'anyone but England'. And I don't find it offensive if the SNP goes along with it. (I'm English.)

Scotland and England are really different. I can’t speak for Wales or Northern Ireland but I’m guessing their culture is pretty different too.

And for me it's "anyone but Portugal" because Ronaldo is a primadonna. But this was probably finally his last WC so I can move on from that now.
