To have gone round to neighbours about their dog?

I've posted before about my neighbours and their very barky dog who barks throughout the day, so frequently and it's now every ten minutes or so.

I went to the council about it and they sent a letter to them and I've been keeping logs.

They can keep it quiet and have done on several occasions but most days it barks and barks and barks.

Its got to the point where wfh, watching tv, eating a meal, reading, anything basically is disturbed and barking has started being late at night. Neighbours also shout at each other most days and dog. Both are ill, heart issues and cancer, but also clearly antisocial and disrespectful to their neighbours.

This morning, the dog was barking an insane amount. Both are home all the time (retired) whilst dog is barking. This has been going on a year since I moved here. I was supposed to be presenting on a work call but dog was coming through on the call. Really shit.

I went round and I asked very nicely and calmly if they can keep dog quiet. He said they're trying. I replied that they have kept dog quiet on a few occasions for long periods of time, why can't they do that all the time. He just told me 'we're trying'. I said its very antisocial to keep letting your dog bark and not once have they come round and said sorry and he said, 'sorry for what?' I said for being antisocial. He then got more dismissive and angry and told me he's very busy, walked past me and got into his car.

There have been times in the past where they invited me in to meet the dog after I got exasperated by the barking and the dog barked at me non stop the whole time I was there and the few times I've seen male neighbour out and about and stopped him to ask what they're doing about the barking (im always very nice and calm), and I was told they're going to start training but each time they also have said they don't have time to do training due to their health concerns which is bollocks as she is sat in that house shouting and arguing with him every day and he is in that house 22 hours a day. Dog never ever gets walked.

Anyway, I left it at that but my mental health is so low.

The council are doing their thing, but I wondered if they'll take their health into consideration and be lenient?

I also thought of taking them to court myself but I wondered if the judge may be lenient too? I can offer pages and pages of written logs and sound recordings but not sure I'll get anywhere anymore.

I can't afford to move.

Could you offer / demand to take the dog to get trained? Shouldn't have to but for the sake of your health..

I don't think they'd want to pay for it, otherwise they'd have got a trainer to cone to their home by now, or so you'd hope given they clearly know the barking affects me and also the dog must be so anxious to bark that much, but I don't think they care on either of those points really.

Oh it is. The dog rules them. Ive heard it snapping at them and them squealing. Its ridiculous really. He hates the dog. When we spoke all friendly and she invited me in, she gushed how it loved to sit in the window all day (where it barks at everything) and told me laughing how its passed being trained now. Meanwhile when I stop him in the street, he tells me theyre starting training very soon everytime and that its not been done yet because of 'everything going on'. That'll be them sitting in the living room all day, everyday then apart from his one hour visit to the shop and his evening visit to the pub. The same time every single day.

Why should she do any of that ?
The neighbours are anti social with a dog they haven’t trained.

Dog barking is like torture.
If it’s getting on your nerves (odd reaction) it’s not compulsory to read her posts.

Thank you 😊

You are getting on my nerves with your whinging and whining about this.

  1. Offer to help out with dog walks, you know, try to be kind.

2.Ear plugs

  1. Move house.

I guess another possible option is to offer to walk the dog yourself?

that was suggested on the last thread. She can’t and I don’t blame her. It needs removing, I don’t like dogs but I wouldn’t like to see one being neglected @Chefpighave you reported to the RSPCA ?

HappiestSleeping · 17/07/2026 19:41

@Chefpig I have two of the barkiest dogs I've ever had today. Norwegian Bohunds. It's taken me longer than ever before, but they haven't barked in about two hours now.

Patience and consistency, and not a great deal of physical effort.

Hi. Just an update. After I went round yesterday and the male neighbour was less than friendly with me, I went out shortly after and returned to silence from them and the dog, apart from the odd bark which they silenced immediately. They absolutely can keep the dog from barking. Why they don't do it everyday, I'll never know. It never lasts, but here's hoping.

Ime its the easiest thing to train your ddog not to do!
You really only need a few hours at home in the room nearest to the door they go through into the garden .
Every time they bark a stern voice 'IN '
Every bark.

IN every time.

Just for a minute then let them back out..short time in though or the reasoning is gone !
Our puppy is 9 months and bark proof now. It's very satisfying..and I'm smug to both ndns who have fucking rabid beasts..
Sounds like it anyway.

Not necessarily the easiest, but certainly one of the easiest. I have two German Shepherds, a Husky and a Lab here today. The latter two I have regularly, so they know the rules, one of the GSD'S is only 5 months old, and he's learned in a few hours. They're all sleeping now, all the doors are open, the dogs over the back from me are barking their heads off, and not a peep from any in here.

You have a choice to not come on the threads I create if you are so fed up with my whinging and whining.

I will not be walking their dog. I do not have time and they have been antisocial twats for a year without so much as an apology, not only the barking, but also arguing late at night too.

Why should I wear earplugs all the time? I simply can't when I am working. I couldn't concentrate on my work if I am listening to music or a podcast or whatever,

Give me the money to move house and I very gladly will.

You say these things like it's that easy. It's not. In future stay off my threads about this so I won't be getting on your nerves. There, it's that simple.

Hi there, could you please tell me how you teach dogs not to bark? I used to have a neighbour with a constantly barking dog (I've since moved, thank goodness) and I used to ask her nicely to keep him quiet more, but she always just said she didn't know what to do? I didn't grow up with dogs and have never owned one (I do like them though) so I have no idea how one would train a dog not to bark. Thanks.

I mentioned a few things later on in the thread, but feel free to PM me if you want to know more in order that we don't derail the thread. Same for anyone else.

HappiestSleeping · 15/07/2026 11:29

It is so frustrating, especially when it is relatively easy to teach the dog not to bark.

I have two who live across the back from me, and they bark if you breathe too loudly. There is an alley between us, so everyone that walks past sets them off.

I look after dogs, and every time I jave a new one to stay, I have to spend the first couple of hours teaching mine not to bark when the ones over the back start. Frustrating, but also gives me good practice and has benefits elsewhere for the dogs staying with me.

Could you post on local social media and ask if anyone would be able to join a group of volunteers to walk a very sad dog which is stuck in a house with two elderly people whose heath problems mean they can’t walk it?

if you could organise people to walk the dog, it would definitely help.

igelkott2026 · 15/07/2026 16:17

Why do people like that even have a pet?

Surely you understand that sometimes people make complicated choices for all sorts of reasons?

They may have got the dog thinking it would be easier than it is. They may be very unhappy and think a dog will make them happier.

No, not at all. I mean let the council do their job but do not retaliate in the meantime.

Ah, I understand. I won't retaliate as it may affect my complaint with council and tbh I don't have any noise to make.

Is one of your neighbours currently being treated for cancer OP? It sounds to me like they're having a terrible time too.

I think you need to wait for them to be dealt with by people with enough distance to show compassion towards them, and if you can't do that then look at moving. You won't gain anything by making more noise, surely you know that.

They can't even look after themselves it seems, let alone an anxious, under-stimulated dog. Their house is filthy.

Why do people like that even have a pet?

Mingou · 15/07/2026 11:50

Poor dog as well. Untrained, unwalked, neglected.

I know someone in a similar situation and they dogknapped the barker and brought it 200 miles away to a shelter where it was trained and adopted.
Not suggesting anyone does that though

The owners deserved that!

What is really annoying which I've said before is that many councils have decided to do away with their dog wardens at a time when dog ownership is high, so there's little you can do with inconsiderate dog owners. We really need dog wardens back and with legal powers to sort this sort of situation out.

It absolutely is possible to train this dog but owners who are particularly thick, don’t grasp that training a dog has to be their way of life. It’s not a case of job done. The techniques need to be repeated and repeated.
My neighbours have a horrendous barking dog, they saw a trainer but completely believe the training didn’t work, but that’s because they didn’t do the work. So devastatingly thick, and the impact of living next door is truly awful.

Edited

Such a common story unfortunately.

Happyjoe · 15/07/2026 16:08

Report the dog to animal charity. The dog barks because neglected, bored and not trained.
The council also have the powers to take the dog away, do keep on at E.Health, keep badgering them.
