Neighbour and his england flag!

Our NDN are both 80, and we don’t have the best relationship with them, we feel they can be a bit inconsiderate in terms of boundary noise. We’ve had to mention a couple of things which have affected the enjoyment of our home. So we don’t really speak anymore and they have clearly taken offence despite us mentioning things in a polite way.

Anyway, the man has put up a large England flag on a pole on the joining fence. It’s right at the front of the house and the pole isn’t particularly high so the flag flaps in our faces or visitors faces when they open our gate to go down our walkway. This morning I got pissed off with it as the wind is always blowing our way so the flag is always over our boundary and it looks like it’s our flag as a result (just to add I love football and have no issues with the flag itself, just the positioning of it).
So this morning I wrapped it round the pole and opened my gate to make a point that it’s a walkway.
Anyway, I was sat in my living room and I heard the man come out and say “someone’s wrapped that up!” In an angry loud voice.
AIBU to think that he should realise it’s a bit inconsiderate and could put the flag in an area that doesn’t hang over our boundary?

The flag came down on Monday 🙌

It’s still up! But I expect it’ll go down if we lose tonight, so hopefully tomorrow. The wind has been on our side so I’ve been feeling, on a whole, slightly less irritated by it, but I’ve also been looking around at other peoples’ flags when driving around (for some reason there’s quite a few in my area), and generally, most people have the pole in the middle of their land so it doesn’t fly over their neighbours’, or, if it is on the boundary it’s high enough not to blow in anyone’s face. So yeah, bit of a joke!

Is it still up op? We need an update.....

maxslice · 16/07/2026 20:49

Bit passive aggressive of you. It’s going to just cause things to escalate.

InterestedDad37 · 15/07/2026 23:09

Take a hedge trimmer to the overhanging bits 👍

Going to war with very elderly people is like going to war with toddlers..they have the time to stand their ground. Pick your battles.

I am curious to what the original fall out was though.

Of course she means the St George cross, which is the flag of England. What else do you think she means by 'England flag'? A picture of Mr Blobby and a Gregg's?

OP, absolutely YANBU. If it's hanging over your property, they're dickheads.

Mr Blobby and Greggs 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah probably in about 6 hours 😄

There you go.

Byebye flag 👋

Nannyfannybanny · 15/07/2026 21:23

Oh do grow up,a lot of people insist on calling the union flag ,and England flag. It was a genuine question. I shan't engage further.

TeaIsLovely · 15/07/2026 20:09

Oh the flag will be down come the weekend - and as they’re in their 80s, they may have kicked the bucket on 2028 and replaced by a family with 10 screaming kids…..so pick your battles.

I’m just thinking if we win the World Cup it’ll be up for ages. Plus the 3rd place play off. Also we’d be looking at the same issue again in 2 years with the euros etc etc

It really isn’t that big of a deal and it’s our country’s flag.

ByUniqueViper · 15/07/2026 20:06

Could you maybe wait until the world cup is over then address it after that if its still in the way?

😆 I have no clue what's going on in this part of the thread .... but we do need a thread about the England flag in general.

I would enjoy discussing the politics of our flag now and all the feelings it evokes ( rightly or wrongly).

Some posters get their Alan’s in a twist when it comes to the St George flag, as we know.

Right, off to watch the match.

TTFN.

Well done.

The flag of England is the St George’s cross - that would be the correct name, hence my question.

No, if we're being pedantic, it's called the England flag. It is based upon the Cross of St George, which appears on all sorts of other shields, symbols and flags. St George's cross has been used for centuries by many different places and armies, we are not the first to use it on the our flag, and it's not even our original flag, which used to have the Cross of St Edmund on it (similar to the Jerusalem cross).

Do you call all the other flags by their correct name? Le Tricolour, La Rojigualda etc? I think that might come across a bit twatty tbh

Laughorbloodycry · 15/07/2026 19:33

It sounds like the overall problem is something similar to mine - another issue, on top of prior issues and you feel you can't now raise another problem.
You want people to just think for one minute about their impact. You e already had experience asking them to stop something and you are left feeling like the problem. So you're kind of silenced.

My advice to you here - breathe through this one. Literally spend an hour tonight doing that 6.7.8 breathing and let yourself know it is going to improve when you are able to switch your energy off.

He's a twat. I don't care his age. The flag can go in his gob for all I care. This is about you finding a way to try bring your energy down, feel calm in the face of this fucking annoyance behaviour. Things usually naturally improve then.

Put up an Argentinian flag along the same boundary. Or maybe a Palestinian or Pride flag, sounds like the type who’d love that.

Edited

Why? Because you’ve made assumptions about someone who puts up an England flag?

If you were to put up an Argentinian flag today I’d think you were a bit of a twat (unless you were Argentinian of course).

We have an England flag up and last weekend we also had a pride flag up because it was our local pride festival.

Well if it was a tree with branches overhanging on to your property you would have the right to cut anything that goes from the border on to your side. I'd be considering that. But I suppose it would be best to ask the neighbour to move it.

Frankly most the houses I've seen with St George cross flags appear to be inhabited by the far right. And I wouldn't want anyone to think that was me. So I might find another flag that I could fly instead and act surprised when the neighbour asks where his went.

"Oh! It was just gone!! I guess it flew off in that high wind last night!!! And since it was gone I thought flying the Welsh/Iranian/Argentinian/Pride flag would be a delightful change!!!"

England are playing

So people are flying the English flag

Why wouldnt they

Are all the England players racist too?

You must be very popular with all these visitors. Last person who walked down my front path was the Amazon man a few days ago.
