Does your hometown get insane and awful in summer?

Mine does and the horror is in full swing. Everyone out on the streets plus thousands of tourists and other visitors and for some reason everyone gets ruder and more stupid every year. You can't walk down the main street without being knocked about like a pinball. Step ASIDE OMG I am not capable of evaporating to let you walk directly through me.

I wish this had died for good with COVID times.

I'm from London originally, horrendous in the summer, especially on the tube. I reckon the Piccadilly was the worst, too many tourist spots like Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, green Park (for the Palace) Knightsbridge ( (for Harrods) South Ken (museums) plus Russell Square (hotels) and Kings X and Holborn for interchanges. Durring heatwaves and rush hours it was horrendous.

I live in small town Somerset now....reasonably popular. It's close to Bath which is obviously full of tourists and we get some day and weekend visitors. We have a successful indie market and a venue often used as a warm up for Glastonbury (Foo Fighters,Paul McCartney, Kate Nash, Gary Numan have all played there) and a Soho House venue often used by celebrities especially as a wedding venue. But it's much more manageable.

Edinburgh too. And yes it’s hell most of the time to walk through town. But tourists can be cute though.

Im really baffled by the posing though. I walk home past the station / Princes Street Gardens and there’s an incredible number of tourists (mainly Chinese I think) who have a range of props with them (hats, different handbags, sunglasses etc) and they take endless posed pictures trying out different accessories between takes. What’s that all about? It’s like their own amateur fashion shoot. And no I don’t bust a gut to avoid getting in the background!

This endless posing for ridiculous pictures is a trend everywhere now unfortunately - we do a lot of city breaks and the insta poseurs are an endless source of entertainment (and sometimes irritation!). We equally don’t avoid getting in their photos as half the time they’re monopolising the viewing areas that everyone has come to enjoy 🙄.

All year round, but much more irritating in the hot weather. People with no self awareness and the dogs on extendable leads, really take the pee

Supersimkin7 · 14/07/2026 23:09

Hooters on Scooters!

Not that many of them round this bit of London but it’s party central from May-Oct cos huge park and good clubs.

Worst summer eruption: every bike runs red lights, terrifying for pedestrians.

Three cyclists got killed last year by lorries which upset the police cos riders, clothed or not, ignore warnings.

emmetgirl · 14/07/2026 22:59

Hmmm.
I live in Cornwall.
So…..yeah.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 14/07/2026 22:58

Nope. I live in a suburb of London with a fantastic community but nothing, literally nothing to attract visitors. It's great!

TwoBad · 14/07/2026 22:55

I've noticed a real difference in the type of tourists visiting my town over the last few years. Fewer language schools since brexit. But we have been discovered by tik tok/ insta people.

We have a very pretty park (think historic buildings, stunning flower beds, lovely clear river gently flowing with swans floating about, etc). And people now come there in hoards to take endless photos of themselves posing in floaty dresses.

Last week dd and I sat by the little cafe in the park and just people watched, because watching the girls endlessly posing whilst their boyfriends/family take hundreds of photos is surprisingly entertaining.

Because it’s nicer than where they live?

Maybe, but its scraping the barrel. Our town is generally known as one of the worst locations in Cornwall.....

UnderThePressure · 14/07/2026 22:46

I live in Brighton so yes!
Although I still don't think it's as busy as before Covid.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 14/07/2026 22:42

Village in Yorkshire.
In the school hoilidays and weekends, the traffic is insane. But its all headed fo the tourust attraction, rather than the village itself. But the car park queue can stretch a mile at peak time... and theres no alternative for parts of it.

(And the planning geniuses want to build more houses right next door to the attraction...)

I live in Cornwall, but not on the coast. Just a normal market town. Why are the tourists here? There's nothing for them to do but they're everywhere.

InOverMyHead84 · 14/07/2026 22:42

Yep. My home town gets it in Summer with a music festival clogging everything up and winter with a Christmas market.

And the council is still flat broke

No, the students all go Home and it’s no one in their right mind would visit unless they had too.

Wondering if we live in the same place 😁

brunettemic · 14/07/2026 22:38

No, I live near Liverpool and it’s always busy. It’s funny that loads of people go to Southport though as it’s a dump.

Nopuedeser · 14/07/2026 22:37

I don’t live in a touristy place, so no. I live in a town with a high student population so it’s very quiet in the summer.

Greedybilly · 14/07/2026 22:20

Yes it's bloody awful where I am - loads of pissed up lads, hen doooes, cyclists in lycra, boomers pushing dogs round in prams. People dawdling across the road gawping at phones. Brilliant!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 14/07/2026 22:20

It gets a lot busier with tourists every time there is a break, which means getting stuck behind a lot of caravans, and driving at the speed limit signs which locals ignore. Driving anywhere at 20mph seems to take forever!

ExplodingSmittens · 14/07/2026 22:14

VivienneDelacroix · 14/07/2026 20:27

I had a French friend who described his experience of living in Manchester in the summer as - "I don't understand, a little bit of sun and Sainsbury's is full of all these scally topless".

I don’t understand either but “these scally topless” is a perfect way to describe them Smile

liveforsummer · 14/07/2026 22:14

Edinburgh- mostly avoid the town centre late July and August. Thankfully the council has mainly gone online now as it used to be necessary to visit the offices for a number of things which is right in the heart of tourist central!

BashfulClam · 14/07/2026 22:12

I grew up on the coast and you see the hordes of teens getting off the train already off their faces at 10am. The anti social behaviour is off the scale. I got told previously on here if I moved to a popular area i shouldn’t be apprised it gets busy…erm I was born there, I didn’t really have much of a choice.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 14/07/2026 22:11

Yeah but partly my grumpiness at the traffic and semi naked people in Tesco is due to my age- by contrast my teens think the summer here is amazing, which I get because it’s busy and there’s a bit of a party vibe.

5128gap · 14/07/2026 22:10

No. The beauty of living in a town no one would ever come to unless they lived here, means that in summer its peaceful, as everyone takes holidays and day trips far far away from it!
