AIBU to keep photos of myself displayed in my bedroom?

A few friends came round for dinner and commented on the fact that I have a lot of pictures of myself displayed in my bedroom. They said it came across as self-centred, and one person even suggested I should take them down, saying they would call the police if I didn’t.

I have been thinking about whether they had a point and whether having lots of pictures of myself in my bedroom could genuinely come across that way. I can understand that everyone has different tastes and that some people might prefer a more neutral or less personal space.

At the same time, I live by myself and I’m single at the moment, so my bedroom is a personal space that reflects me. I do have pictures of my adult children displayed around the rest of my house, but the pictures in my bedroom are of my own memories, experiences, and moments that are important to me.

I don’t want to dismiss how others might see it, and I understand that not everyone would choose to decorate their bedroom the same way. But I was hurt by the way it was presented, as it felt more like criticism than a genuine conversation. What upset me most was that not one person stepped in and said they understood my point of view or that I had a right to have my own choices in my own home.

The situation ended up turning into an argument because they kept telling me to take the pictures down and I chose not to. They then said that if I wasn’t going to remove them, they would leave.

Am I wrong for having pictures of myself in my own bedroom, or is it reasonable to want my personal space to include things that make me happy?

No, they are kind of worse than normal pics. Why would someone need to display a graduation photo in their own home?

I understand parents having them up but people themselves?

I live alone and have memories of my mum putting my grad photo in her spare room while other family pics took pride of place. I think it's psychological for me to display mine.

So you are teaching your child that only young women before childbirth are the only ones that are attractive? That's pretty sad.

Obsession with your looks is not healthy and certainly not a healthy thing to teach your child.

It sounds as though you think it's just your looks that validate you.

"Here's mummy with her first chainsaw, which she taught herself how to strip down, take apart, maintain, and reassemble"

"Here's mummy with her different gardens she grew all over the world"

"Here's mummy in her bar which she ran by herself in a second language she learned on the fly in a matter of months"

"Here's mummy when she was an environmental activist"

"Here's mummy at the festival she got a grant to organise which raised funds for the food bank"

There's a lot happened in my life and these photos that I talk about with my son. I have a few photos in that lot where I really like how I look. You had to take something lighthearted and project onto it. My body, my face, and my life have changed massively in the past 20 years. It's okay to go "actually, I look really nice here"

There's fuck all photos of my mum around in her home because she thinks she looks hideous in all of them. Now that to me is sad.

I agree! But then I think having photos of yourself on display is an indicator that someone is validated by their looks

Not if it's graduation photos.

If you can't have self esteem in your own private home, where can you?

I have photos of myself in my home. I joke to my son "this is from when mummy was young and hot, before 2 years of sleep deprivation".

You know what my friends say when they see them? "Wow, you look lovely in that photo!"

I have started catching up on an old series on Stv player. And the episode I started watching today has the guy breaking into a young woman's flat. And she just has loads of photos of herself placed all around the flat. And I can't tell you how much it irritated me and made me dislike her because I'm thinking she must be totally in love with herself.

So I'm afraid OP i would find it very off putting if I knew you enjoyed looking at photos of yourself to the extent of having your bedroom plastered with them.

What's everyone doing in your bedroom? Was this a sex party? Ask MN to move this to the sex topics you pervert.

The pictures are fine though. Ignore them.

I assume it was a tour of her new flat or house and they’d been drinking hence the stupid jokes about the police and they would leave if she didn’t remove the photos.

What the fuck did I just read, they threatened to call the police over some photos?

Obviously a joke

Tamtim · 15/07/2026 03:34

This is mental. You can decorate your own bedroom in any way you choose to. I’d think it was a bit unusual to adorn a bedroom with photos of yourself but it doesn’t matter what I think, it’s your space, not mine. Don’t take your photos down.

Random321 · 15/07/2026 01:36

I'm assuming copious amounts amounts of illegal substances were consumed at this dinner party as everyone seems a little off.

BeardySchnauzer · 14/07/2026 20:30

many years ago we viewed a flat and above the fireplace was a large studio photo of the girl who lived there (she was young and her parents owned the flat). The bedroom was full of her photos. The thing that stuck with me though was that every millimeter of surface in the bathroom was covered in make up bottles etc. it was quite impressive

Valid8me · 14/07/2026 20:14

Why were these people in your bedroom? How many photos are we talking about? What exactly would they plan on saying to the Police?

Nah, I don't think this is real either,

Goditsmemargaret · 14/07/2026 19:52

What a pack of weirdos. The person threatening to call the police sounds quite funny though. I mean I'm assuming they were all taking the complete piss but behind all the 'joking' they were sincerely laughing at you for being vain and conceited.

I don't think they are your friends.

PinkyFlamingo · 14/07/2026 19:29

You have very strange friends

frenchnoodle · 14/07/2026 19:25

Some of the replies taking this serious do make me wonder if some posters have never had human interaction.

What did the last post say?

It was a rather crude threat to kill anyone who referred to her friends as weird

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 14/07/2026 19:20

How bloody rude. Reminds me of an episode of Come Dine With Me when the guests take a tour purely to poke fun at the host. Leave up your photos. They’re happy memories. No one says you can only have photos of other people in your place
